  1. North Oldham's first year coach Brock Roberts has done an incredible job, building on the development Jamie Brown made over the past two years at North Oldham.   We'll see if they can justify a top 10 ranking over the course of the year, but make no mistake, the Mustangs are a competitive team, and fun to watch.   Franklin has had their number in the past - we'll see if North has closed the gap any this week.

Records/streaks:  South Oldham (5-1), winners of five straight; Woodford (3-1), winners of three straight

Location:   Cy Tucker Field at Mitchell Irvin Stadium in Crestwood, KY on the campus of South Oldham HS.   Highway 329 bypass  Kickoff 7:30 pm

Since 1998, these two programs have met just three times, with South winning two in a row, including a 61-33 win in the 2016 Class 5A playoffs.....

Haven't seen Woodford this year, but South is beginning to develop a clear personality under first-year coach Jonathan Sams - one that (not surprisingly) looks a lot like recent Dragon teams.

Leading the option offense is veteran (2nd-year starter) senior QB Nick Hamilton, who has proven equally dangerous with his arm and his legs.   Hamilton has been particularly prolific over the last three contests, rushing for over 100 yards in each of the three games and scoring multiple touchdowns in each.   At the same time, he's been a very effective 17-29 passing for 284 yards and 3 TDs with 0 picks through the air.

Hamilton had 121 yards rushing and four scores at Spencer County...127 yards and 3 rushing TDs against Oldham County...and 116 yards rushing and 2 TDs against Anderson last week on the road.   For the season, he's averaging 92.2 yards per game on the ground, or 553 yards total, with 13 rushing TDs.   He's added 7 more through the air.

As usual, South is a multi-headed monster on the ground, with multiple viable threats.   Sophomore fullback Cole Greenwell has 472 yards and 3 TDs (rushed for 100 yards / 1 TD vs Anderson last week) and senior slotback Jacob Acevedo has 351 yards rushing and 4 TDs (60 yards / 1 TD vs Anderson).

All three backs have at least one 100+ yard game to their credit, and their combined success has resulted in three consecutive games for South now with over 300 yards rushing, including a 341 yard / 5 TD effort two weeks ago against Oldham County.

Defensively, South has been to answer some pre-season questions.  A painfully young secondary has proven it can compete at this level; the South defensive backfield has picked off 6 passes in the last two games and has held 3 of 6 opponents under 100 yards passing.

Individually on the defensive side of the ball, Junior Linebacker Parker Ellis has been a beast of late, with 37 total tackles in the last three games.    Sophomore Edge Sam Dawson (26 tackles in the last two games), and sophomore defensive back Juelz Davila (27 tackles in the last three games) have also been very active of late as the underclassmen continue to lead the way for the South "D".

The defensive stood out in the 41-7 win over Anderson County last week, holding the Bearcats to 150 yards of total offense, recording 12 TFL, recovering a fumble, and swiping three passes, including a pick-6.

Hopefully, someone more knowledgeable about the Yellowjackets will fill in the gaps with regards to Woodford; all I really know is what I've read.   WC has won three in a row since an opening loss to defending 6A champ Bullitt East; the Yellowjackets feature a balanced attack that can hurt you on the ground or in the air.

It's been two weeks since Woodford beat Pulaski, so the Jackets should be rested up and prepared for South Oldham.   WC has put up plenty of points this year, averaging about 35 ppg.

  3. WHO:   North Oldham Mustangs (3-2) vs. Henry County Wildcats (4-0)

WHEN: Friday, 9/22/23    Kickoff 7:30 pm ET

WHERE:  North Oldham HS, Goshen, KY

IMPLICATIONS:   This is a district matchup; North is 1-0 in Class 4A, District 4 play; Henry County is playing its first district game.

SERIES:   All-time series between North and Henry is tied at 6-6.   North has won the last 4 and 5 of the last 6.

LAST MEETING:   10/24/2020 - North Oldham 13 Henry County 7  (Prior to that game, the two teams had not played in 8 years)

BROADCAST:   FREE, live HD video coverage begins at 7 pm ET on www.pegasussportsky.com     Mike Montgomery and Mark Neu have the call.

VERY interesting matchup in Goshen tonight.    These may not be two ranked teams, but they are two good teams, and appear very well matched.   It's a district affair, with very real playoff implications already.

North bounced back from some early-season injury issues to hammer a decent Shelby County team last week, 49-21.   It was the Mustangs' highest-scoring game of the year, and the newly-installed Mustang passing game, led by third-year starter, senior QB Jack Bullock, was practically unstoppable as Bullock connected on 29 of 43 passes for a whopping 5 TDs and 0 picks and 423 yards.    Star WR Gray Schmittel hauled in 12 receptions for 169 yards and 2 TDs - he's caught 25 passes for over 300 yards and 4 TDs in the last two games against respectable competition (5A rival South Oldham and district rival Shelby County).

The Mustangs welcomed big-play capability back to their receiver corps in the form of sophomore Lucas Tompkins, who had exploded onto the scene last year as a freshman, showing an incredible propensity for coming down with the deep ball.    Tompkins, in his first action of the season, caught 8 passes for 131 yards and 2 TDs, and gave North the real ability to stretch the field.

The running game wasn't so prolific, however, finishing with just 35 yards and a TD on 16 carries.

Defensively, LB Mack Pyle continues to excel this year for North, with 9 total tackles, along with a "pick six".

Henry County returns the bulk of the skill players from last year's team, and it shows in the numbers the Wildcats are putting up.   Henry scored 28 points in a season opening 28-12 win over Newport - and has scored more points in each succeeding game, including 49 points two weeks ago against 5A Anderson County.

QB Jordan King had a stellar year in 2022, but Henry isn't leaning to hard on his abilities.   He's thrown just 42 passes in four games, completing 21, but throwing for 346 yards and 5 TDs, against just one pick.

The Cat's #2 and #3 running backs are back this year, with Ray Matthews leading the way with 649 yards on just 84 carries, with 9 TDs.   Blaik Nation, who rushed for over 500 yards last season, helps provide a 1-2 punch with 170 yards and 3 scores so far.   Both runners are a threat to catch the ball out of the backfield.

Contrasting sharply with North Oldham's arial assult is the Henry ground game; last week against Anderson County, the Cats rushed for 375 yards, with two players over 100 yards (Matthews  181 yards, 3 TDs, and Nation 126 yards 2 TDs).

Last year's leading receiver also returns - Kyle Gillingham - and he has 6 catches for 120 yards and 3 scores so far, all team-highs.

Defensively, Brody Staples (49 total tackles, 6 TFL) and Craig Cole (47 total tackles) are both averaging around 12 tackles a game.   Both Staples and Cole had 17 tackles against Anderson County two weeks ago.   Kyle Gillingham - when he isn't catching passes - is catching quarterbacks....he leads Henry with 6.5 sacks through 4 games.

There's no easy win in this district, so all district games are tremendously important, but North could all but seal a playoff berth with a win tonight, putting them at 2-0 in district play, with games against #6-ranked Franklin County (4-0), Western Hills (4-0), and Spencer County (1-4) still to play.

Broadcast time of what should be a VERY entertaining game begins at 7 pm ET on www.pegasussportsky.com

  4. The Dragons lead the all-time series, 18-17, and have been the dominant team of late, winning 12 of the last 13 matchups.

Oldham last won in 2021, defeating South, 28-20, but before that was a long string of South victories.

Dragons are averaging over 250 yards per game on the ground; Oldham will have to slow that attack down - particularly between the tackles - if they hope to pull the upset.

If South has a weakness, it may be the secondary, and Oldham's sophomore signalcaller, Derek Dees, may be the perfect guy to exploit it.    They really haven't "turned him loose" yet, but he's been very, very impressive in a very conservative passing attack.   Went 10 for 12 last week against Collins.

  5. Who:   South Oldham (3-1) vs. Oldham County (2-2)

When:  Friday 9/15/23   kickoff 7 pm ET

Where: Cy Tucker Field at Mitchell Irvin Stadium in Crestwood, KY on the campus of South Oldham HS

Broadcast:  Free, live HD video coverage begins at 7 pm ET on www.pegasussportsky.com

Announcers:  Mike Montgomery / Jamie Brown

The Colonels and the Dragons go at it again, this time in Crestwood, as the 3-1 Dragons, and the 2-2 Colonels - both led by first-year coaches - tangle.

South Oldham is led by veteran QB Nick Hamilton, who has rushed for over 100 yards in each of the last two games, and scored 7 TDs on the ground in those two contests (vs. Spencer County and North Oldham).   Oldham is led by a young up-and-comer at QB, sophomore Derek Dees, who has thrown just 53 passes, but who has completed a whopping 38 (72%), albeit for just 318 yards and 1 score (but no INT).

South, coached by Jonathan Sams, a former assistant at South under former coach Jamie Reed - looks a lot like South has for years, working out of the triple option attack from a flexbone look, with a powerful attack featuring a hardnosed FB (Cole Greenwell), two versatile wingbacks (Jacob Acevedo and Evan Hickerson), and a QB in Hamilton that is savvy, experienced, and who knows what to do with the ball when it's in his hands.

Greenwell - the younger brother of former South star fullback Keaton Martin - leads the team in rushing with 330 yards and is a bull-headed, hard-running back between the tackles.    His leg drive is extraordinary.   Hamilton has 310 yards rushing and has found the end zone more than any other Dragon, with 8 rushing TDs total and 4 passing TDs.

The Dragons have not been a huge threat through the air, averaging just 47 yards passing per game, and Hamilton has connected only 12 of 31 passes with 4 TDs and 3 INT, but they haven't needed it much, averaging over 250 yards rushing per game.  South rushed for over 300 yards against North Oldham last week.

Oldham, coached by first year coach Sean Little, who came over from Ballard where he was the offensive coordinator, features a solid running game of their own, led by the human bowling ball, Caden Sheppard.    Depending upon who you ask, Sheppard weighs between 250-275 pounds, but whichever is correct, he's a terror to bring down.    Despite his size, Shepard gets going downhill in a hurry, and he's hard to stop once he gets up to speed.   He leads Oldham with 379 rushing yards, averaging 95 yards / game.

Like South, Oldham's #2 runner is the QB, with Dees rushing for 198 yards so far this season, and one 100+ yard game already under his belt.    A remarkably cool player under pressure, Dees plays way beyond his years at QB, rolling effectively to buy time to find receivers, and keeping his eyes downfield the entire time.   He rarely seems flustered in the pocket, but when forced, he's a more than capable runner.

Miller Brown has been a real threat for the Colonels all-around; the receiver has 10 catches on the year and leads OC in receiving yards.    He caught Dees' only TD toss, and is a threat to take it to the house from his secondary position or from his position as KOR.

Oldham's challenge so far has been sustaining drives; they'll need to be able to do so to beat a South team that would be more than happy to win the game by dominating the time of possession.    It will be interesting to see if Little opens up the Oldham passing game just a bit this week now that Dees has four games under his belt.   South's secondary has been the part of their defense that is most questioned, and North Oldham had success throwing the ball in the first half against South last week.

Pegasus Sports will bring the live action ....both teams are 1-1 heading into week 3.

Both teams with new coaches.....North Oldham has brought a new passing attack to the Goshen campus....South will look much the same as recent South teams, featuring a strong running game.

Broadcast starts at 7 pm ET, with Mike Montgomery and former Morehead State lineman Mark Neu on the call.

  7. Both teams need to establish control of the LOS early....neither team wants to play from behind, but that is perhaps especially true of FC, which has thrown the ball very poorly in its first two games.

Oldham has yet to "unleash" sophomore QB Derek Dees, but he has been remarkably consistent in a conservative passing attack so far.

Pegasus goes on air at 7 pm with Mike Montgomery and Jamie Brown (former North Oldham head coach).

  8. WHO:   Oldham County (2-0) at Fern Creek (1-1)

WHERE:  Fern Creek HS, Louisville, KY

WHEN:  Friday, 9/1/23, kickoff 7:30 pm

BROADCAST:  FREE live HD video coverage starts at 7 pm ET on www.pegasussportsky.com

A rejuvenated Oldham County team goes on the road to Fern Creek tomorrow night to face a Tiger team fresh off a win over Fairdale on Sunday.

Oldham County proved it could win when one of the three pieces to the puzzle - the offense - was off-kilter, beating Shelby County at home on Saturday, 17-16.    The Colonels got a field goal and a kickoff return TD from the special teams, and a pick-six from the defense to score all of their points - and the defense, led by Tyler Roark and Nate Votaw (each with 11 total tackles) made that stand up for the win.

Oldham was outgained, 336-106, by Shelby, with just 46 passing yards and 60 rushing yards.   Still, QB Derek Dees, making his second career varsity start, was a very efficient 7 of 10 passing for 46 yards (no TDs or interceptions).    Through two games, Dees (sophomore) is 18 of 25 passing for 127 yards, 0 INT 0 TD.

David Turner scored on the pick six; Jaime Berrera had two PATs and the FG, and Kayden Osbourn scored on the kickoff return for OC.

Fern Creek got their icebreaker win, 28-12, over Fairdale on the road.   Like Oldham, the Tigers were heavily out-gained, yardage-wise, but made what they had count.   The Creek continues to struggle through the air - QB Caleb Passmore (gets my vote for favorite QB name of 2023) was just 3 of 12 passing for 42 yards and a pick, but he also threw a six yard TD pass to Patrick Carr.

On the ground, Mykel Malone had a sterling day, with 101 yards and 1 TD.   Since the beginning of the 2022 season, FC is 4-0 when Malone rushes for over 100 yards.

Also like Oldham County, the FC defense shone.    The Tigers recovered two Fairdale fumbles and intercepted three Bulldog passes as the defense made a meager offensive output be "good enough."   (Fern Creek was outgained, 320 yards to 157.)   Besides his receiving TD, Patrick Carr returned one of the fumbles for a defensive score.    He also kicked four PATs.   James White led the defense with 11 total tackles.

The broadcast starts at 7 pm ET on www.pegasussportsky.com.   The high-def video coverage is FREE, with Mike Montgomery providing the play-by-play.   The video will also be available on the website anytime for viewing after the game.

The game will be Creek's second against an Oldham school; the Tigers lost in Week 1 to North Oldham, 21-7.

    Who wins?

Because they are doing construction at park at Zorn and River road so had to find somewhere else to have it and since Oldham County has course they were gracious to host this year. Will go back to normal location next year.

Figured that there was a good reason....surprised that they didn't go to EP Sawyer...

    Back to football talk...

Oldham County is hosting St. X Tiger run Saturday morning so would be tough to host football game with no parking unless the football game was scheduled for afternoon.

OK, I'll bite.....my kids ran X-C for Oldham County.....both ran numerous times in the Tiger Run (which used to be run over across from the water tower on River Road back then....)......but why isn't St. X hosting their own event??   That's not even in the same county....  😁

  11. Oldham County vs. Shelby County (in Buckner) has not been moved to Saturday, but has been backed up, time-wise, twice.   It will now kickoff at 8:30 pm ET tomorrow.

Plenty of activity before that, though, as Oldham dedicates the new artificial turf field, renames the stadium, and celebrates 70 years.    6 pm tailgating, 6:30 "Colonelwalk", 7 pm Allen Lane Band, 8 pm field dedication and flyover, 8:30 kickoff, and about 9:30, halftime fireworks.

  12. It'll be hot, but it'll be a FESTIVE night in Buckner!

6 pm - Tailgating and food

6:30 pm - First ever "COLONEL WALK" from school to field house

7 pm - Allen Lane Band   ("Country with a Southern Rock Flare")

8 pm - Field Dedication (new turf field...stadium renamed "Bell Field at Kris Landers Stadium) and Flyover

8:30 - Kickoff.   Oldham County vs. Shelby County

approx. 9:30 pm - HALFTIME FIREWORKS

FREE LIVE HD VIDEO COVERAGE on www.pegasussportsky.com, beginning at 8 pm.

  13. Might as well go to four championships.....the SEC championship, the BIG championship, all other FBS schools' championship, and the FCS championship.   Let everyone believe that their championship is the "real" championship......

Get rid of the bowls - nobody wants to watch the backups play while the already-professional starters "rest for the NFL combine", anyway....

    ☹️

  14. OK.....PPR league.....one keeper.....just as a general question.....keep Lamar Jackson, who I think is going to have a monster year in the new Baltimore offense, with his new weapons around him.....or Amon-Ra St. Brown, who catches everything thrown to him and is a reception magnet for Detroit?

Last year, I would have leaned towards St. Brown (and I would have been right), but I don't know this year.   The league is QB-friendly, and the new Baltimore offense is going to enhance Lamar's passing and rushing totals.....

I also have Breece Hall, and online "gurus" are saying to keep him.....but I'm not sold on Hall, who will see Dalvin Cook join him in the backfield, plus a highly-regarded rookie, and who also has to prove he is back from the ACL tear.....

  15. This one is a confirmed 8 pm kick now, to try to avoid a little of the heat.

Going to be quite the celebration.

OC celebrating 50 years as a high school and their first game on the artificial turf.    Dedication of stadium to the late Kris Landers......this will include....

"Colonelmarch"....the Oldham team will walk from the back of the HS building to the fieldhouse, through a corridor of fans....

There will be a band before the game....

There will be a flyover before the game...

    Fireworks afterwards...

Personal air conditioners will be handed out to the first 2,000 fans....(OK, OK, that's not true, but it would be NICE...  )

And....it's Oldham County vs. Shelby County.    The rivalry for all of us older folks who remember the great Oldham-Shelby games of past years....  😄
