Why make it to where someone has to go for two?
Id venture a guess more teams go for 2 on a regular basis then kick for 1 if you look statewide.
-
In a game that's 36-0, which scenario is more likely: The score getting to 72-0, or the score getting to 36-36?
I get its a different level but, twice now I have seen a MS team come back from 30 point deficit to win. A third time, winning team got to 32 point difference, then both teams kept scoring and it ended up 82-25.
-
It should be 35.
Not really, if you go for 2 earlier in the game its a non issue.

I agree that this is a downside. Honest question, though...how often do losing teams put in their backups once the game is out of hand?
I attended several running clock games last season where Cov Cath had their 2nd and 3rd stringers in during the 4th quarter against the opposing team's starters, but I don't recall many of the opponents putting in their backups. That definitely supports your post.
The choice then for the losing team is to either keep their starters in and try to reduce the gap on the scoreboard, or put in their backups as well once they see the winning team's backups going in.
It also depends on the talent gap. One teams #2 could be way better than another teams #2. So as the game progresses, the talent has to get even for both teams. Example Trinity's #2's are probably a lot better than Ohio County's #1's.

I think it prevents the 2nd or 3rd string players getting game time. When they get the chance to go out there, they are now rushed on every aspect of play. That in my opinion is a Very big downside.
I agree, it really should be 42 instead of 36 IMO.

Just out of curiosity...has the losing team ever came back to win once the running clock was in place?
Yes, there was a playoff game in the early 2000's where that happened.

Do you really believe coaches have goon squads whose purpose is to knock specific players out the game, and implement and practice that as part of the game plan?
Squads no, one or two players than can count on to deliver a "legal blow" to the same effect, yep some do.

Define "really bad".
Real bad as in they weren't even competitive. Its not that they lost, but how they lost.
Compare it this way, Trinity is #1 in 6A with 2 loses, why, they have had competitive games and lost, ok.
Hopkinsville has played competitive competition, and not show up.
-
Trinity will be #1 next week and be 0-3. That sounds crazy, but its probably right.
-
Im not sure Hopkinsville belongs in the top 10 here with 2 really bad losses.
-
Juuust a bit outside. At number 15.
I think that's too low for them. They should be 10-12 IMO.

He has more offers than this, he had 2 as an 8th grader.

I meant to add earlier in this thread that it's pretty bad to have to pay for parking for a high school game. They lower ticket prices by $2, but then charge you $5 to park.
I've always wondered why schools don't charge for parking for games. Just a buck or two. All the complaining about not having funds and yet there is an easy revenue program parked in their laps. $5 is a little steep.

Good in theory, what if you dont have a 2nd or 3rd string?
