  1. Great insight...thanks...I would say its very important for you to be a member....you have several girls that could have a chance to make all state down the road....at least if you nominate them you have done your part...if all the area coaches don't belong though your girls will probably not be chosen bc the coaches that know them best will be the nky coaches and that's where they would need to get there votes from.

I would love for this to be a big topic at the next coaches meeting.

Never been to a coaches association meeting that this has not been a topic of conversation. Absolutely can not force coaches to join.

  2. Field looked fine and most of Holly Cross errors where throwing. I would like to know the list of Several High School fields that are better surfaces than NKU's field. Everyone plays on the same surface.
NKU has a very nice softball complex, my comment was that the infield playing surface is not the smoothest around and I think there is some agreement to that point.
  3. Conner gets a fairly easy win.

Conner out hit HC 10-9 (according to the score board) neither team had many hard hit balls. Simms was on big time today and not really sure how HC managed to get to 9 hits, a lot of them were in the last 2 innings.

Holy Cross couldn't field a ball to save there live. HC had I believe 7 errors and of course Moran had several (I hope JMU never plays at NKU bc for what ever reason she stuggles on defense there) I would say to make it worse several of Connors hits should have been caught also.

Conner's first two runs were scored on bang bang plays at home. The first one was on a routine ball hit to 3rd with two outs in the 4th, HC's 3rd baseman went home instead of first the ball clearly beats her home but the umps says she gets under the tag. The second one was about the same way but the ump says the catcher missed the tag, I had a real good view of that one and I disagree, but I am guessing Connors fans were going to say they were safe both times and I know HC's fans were saying both were outs. Conner probably still finds a way to win the game but if HC gets the calls it could have changed the game, most of HC's errors came after the second call. Tough calls for the umps either way and maybe even tougher for HC bc usually if it is a bang bang play and the ball beats them there they are called out more times than not. I would say if the ump got both calls right he may be one of the best of all times bc they were both really close.

Not that I am happy with those calls bc HC didn't do near enough to win just trying to lay out the scene.

Very impressed by Simms even though HC some how got 9 hits I think that might have been the best performence I have seen so far this season. Some of those hits may have been bc Conner had such a big lead late. Also not sure how Conner's centerfielder (Himes I believe) ended up hitting wise (guessing like 2 for 4 or 3 for 5) but I was also really impressed with her, she appears to be a real tough out. I am not sure if she had an off day the first time we played but I did not notice her like I did today.

Good luck to all, hopefully tomorrow brings out some better softball bc tonight at least NCC, HC and Dixie didn't play it real well.

Only been on that surface a few times, but I didn't care for it much. Several of the area high school infields are smoother.
  4. JMU correctly pointed out that the other thread was not the place to complain so.....

We see in the Coaches Association All-Star team that IMO the two best players in NKY didn't even make the team.

The rules appear to be that a coach as to nominate his own players and then other coaches get to vote.

    1. Why as a coach do I need to have another coach tell me what players on his team I can vote for? I know Moran is a dangerous stud player. I don't need the Holy Cross coach to tell me she's "on the list."

    2. IF these are the asinine rules why wouldn't Holy Cross' coach nominate players?

    3. You may HATE the way the Smith situation went down and how she ended up at NDA. You're going to tell me that you're not capable of being an adult and voting for one of the top 2 players in NKY? Come on.

    4. I've always said that anything the coaches vote on is simply a waste of time. Partly because of 1 through 3 and partly because they're so busy they truly can't vote intelligently.

Any and all coach teams IMO are worthless.

Who would pick the all-star teams then? Not nearly enough media coverage for accurate selections. There are definitely some flaws, but what we have is as good as it is going to get.

  5. Gallatin County 15-1 on the season, only loss coming in the Class A in Owensboro, in a barnburner with St. Henry....Under the conditions, this game goes, either way, my opinion. GC has proved they are worthy, beating teams like Collins, Carroll, Owen, Henry, Walton-Verona,etc etc...So wish the Campbell Co and Simon-Kenton games were made up!!!! Would like to see a lil recognition for a team, that is very talented.....in the NKY area, this will probably never happen, .....
This time of year with the weekday limitations and the district seeding commitments it is almost impossible to make up a game.
  6. Here is the link all of the pool matchups.....http://allaclassic.org/Softball/2013/Pool%20Play%20Field%20Assignments.pdf

According to the KHSCA coaches poll, Gallatin would probably be the underdog in Pool A. But, I would not be surprised to see Gallatin finish in the top 2 of Pool A and advance to the quarterfinal/single elimination round. Gallatin has a lot of experience and had a solid showing in last years All A. The only thing that I know for sure, is that I will probably go down to defeat at the hands of Moonlite BBQ!

Your playing this down a little. I'll take Gallatin as the heavy favorite. Holy Cross, Reidland and Gallatin are my picks. Should be a great tournament, good luck with the rain.

  7. Bishop Brossart graduate Alicia Miller is having an outstanding sophomore season on the mound for Bellarmine. She is 13-6 with a 1.88 ERA in 24 games, 20 of which were starts.

Sisters Kayla and Courtney Morgan, who are Simon Kenton graduates, are having good seasons at the plate for Pikeville. Kayla, a senior pitcher, is batting a team-high .377 with a team-high four homers, 16 doubles and a team-high 35 RBI. Courtney, a freshman first baseman, is batting .302 with three homers and 26 RBI.

Congrats to these young ladies on their success in college. :ylsuper:

Thanks to lawnboy and Richard skinner. In scenic Pikeville now to see UPike upset 16th ranked and msc leader Lindsey Wilson 4-3 as Kayla gets the win and Courtney doubled, singled and scored the go ahead run in the bottom of the sixth.

  8. Now that you mention it, I do remember him saying something to this effect. It's a tough spot to put a coach in when you have kids that don't have even the slightest knowledge of the game. At a minimum they should already have the basics down. If you are starting from scratch with kids on the HS level it can make for one hell of a long season. I understand you have to start somewhere, but I think it needs to start well before HS. This is the reason at Newcath we started a frosh team with 6th & 7th graders from our feeder schools 3 years, so they are prepared when they get to the HS level.
We have to figure out a way to get kids involved at the 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade level. There should be hundreds of t-ball/coach pitch teams in this area and it just isn't happening. It is definitely interesting when 9th grade girls show up to tryouts and ask "Where's the gloves?"
  9. Ball just carries well at SK!!
You are right about that. The field faces the east and the wind always seems to be coming out of the west. Makes the game a little more fun IMO. And I am certainly not saying that is the reason for any Home Run that has ever been hit out of SK either, it still has to be hit. Good luck to your team and daughter, hope your pitcher is doing better, she throws the ball well.
  10. I think if you're talking FLA, then weather could be brought in to the picture, but TN and KY are about the same...plus, weather isn't a factor from April through Oct...my DD's already practiced outside a lot this year...been chilly, but it's been done....and AL's HS schedule, for instance, is only 18 days ahead of KY....it absolutely is a different mindset, and culture for the sport compared to KY....municipally owned and maintained complexes with vibrant youth leagues is the key, I believe....if you build it they will come....over time, those kids will grow into better HS players creating better HS programs, and they will need somewhere to play in the summer, so better travel organizations and opportunities will develop....all of this would create a demand for more REAL, QUALITY COACHES....without that, KY will always languish....my kid will never see the end to that tunnel, 'cause that one's a way down the road....I do wish that for the kid's that are 0-5 years old now, though.

I've been screaming this since the day I signed my girls up for their first team.

  11. A lot of other states do it. I agree with LB though around here it could really hurt numbers, Just speaking for my kid I know there is no way she would play HS softball over HS soccer. I would say Holy Cross's top 4 softball players would choose soccer over softball. Holy Cross has small numbers compared to other schools so maybe it wouldn't be as much of a problem at other schools.

As far as travel ball players go fall is huge for college recruiting, maybe more so than the summer so I am not sure what effect that would have on it but again other states do it and I guess it works for them.

Certainly is different from school to school. We haven't had a Soccer/Softball player in the last 10 years. Don't think it would make a considerable difference for travel ball either, Georgia plays their high school ball in the fall and I would guess they probably have at least 5 times the amount of college softball players as us.
  12. Ok...are we talking about his financial portfolio or his ability to be a HC at a BCS conference school?
Joker took what many would argue is the toughest BCS coaching job in the nation and failed. There will be opportunities for him soon at the mid-major level, if he has any success he will be back at a BCS school.
  13. I don't see joker getting a position above a coordinator at a major school again. He went down in flames as a HC
Really depends on what you consider a "major school". I think you way underestimate the respect Joker has in the college football community. Someone will be willing to give him another shot. Just wait and watch.
  14. How you know you're a terrible coach....one team pays you to coach for another team...
Terrible coach? Just weeks after he is fired he gets hired by a top ten team. Maybe he failed as Head Coach at UK, but Joker Phillips has never and will never have trouble finding a coaching job.
