  1. Fair point but don't all the coaches in the 8th see her play? As an outfielder its probably a little harder bc not a lot of balls are going out that way.

Honest question do coaches that vote for kids in the region just look at stats?

All of the coaches do not get to see all players in the 8th, very big geographic region and that is why the coaches rely so heavily on stats. Jessica also played with one of the better high school players to ever play in this area and a pitcher that was pretty dominant that year making her a little less noticeable to a team that might not see them on a regular basis.
  2. Stoops made it very clear why they run the types of plays they do.

He said they are not able to protect well enough to do anything other than quick short passes. Add in a QB who while getting better at passing is more of a runner and you're stuck with a limited playbook.

Not the problem today, don't remember Whitlow being pressured all that often.
  3. Over the last couple of weeks we have played in several college showcases. Remember college showcases mean nothing as far as wins and loses we don't even turn in final scores. Half the time we don't even keep a book for the other team and its usually free substitutions and unlimited free runners and bat your whole lineup.

That being said every time we play a team as soon as they get a runner on they are trying to sacrifice bunt her to the next base with college coaches in attendence. Does anyone think a college coach who may get lucky to see a couple of bats for each kid a weekend or for that matter in a whole season wants to watch a young lady square around to bunt. Is there any chance in hell a coach is going to recruit a kid to sacrifice bunt. If its in the girls DNA to bunt and she is trying to bunt for a hit that's one thing but I just don't get it they are doing a real inservice to their kids. I know I have a big name team and most travel ball teams would love to beat us but really would you rather beat us or give your player the best chance to show off her skills in front of a college coach. This past weekend against a very good team in Ohio a coach bunted every chance they could and on 3 different times had a runner stike out trying to bunt. UK was there to watch one of his girls she bunted 2 of her 3 times at bat. I can tell you for a fact Rachel Lawson almost never wants to see a kid sacrifice bunt in a showcase type game.

We have played almost 20 games so far this fall and I am pretty certain I haven't called for a sacrifice bunt. In some cases I wounder if it may hurt us down the line bc we have almost no game practice doing it but we only have 3 times when we need to win in the next year so if it cost us one of those times I think I will be ok bc I know we let the girls get as many ab's as they could in the process.

I understand your point, but I also see the flip side. If you have 2 teams in a game situation you play to win and the sacrifice is an integral part of the game. I'm sure the coaches would like to see how well a 3rd, 1st or Catcher can field the bunt, if the 2nd gets there on time, if the RF backs up the throw, if the SS and LF are moving. 3b at Henry County who signed with UL fielded a bunt a couple years back that we talked about for weeks.
  4. Told him during recruiting that he was going to be the guy to be the face of UK Football. Then on Signing day he finds out UK signs another QB that I don't think he knew about. I think after he signed I have a feeling he began to feel like he was going to face a longer uphill climb than anticipated.
I would say every QB with Towles status coming out of high school is told something similar to that and I'm betting every QB of his status expects to be great. Whitlow's signing was a best athlete available type signing, I'm not even sure they expected him to be a QB.
  5. Doesn't leave much time for the social aspect of college. That is why so many girls either give it up or don't pursue it at all. Got to be extremely dedicated and disciplined.

Just wanted to throw a little insight into a regular day so far for my daughter at JMU. Maybe we should rethink trying to get our kids into college!!

Up at 4:30 am for weights running or both after shower and cleanup she's finished around 8 am.

Class from 9am till 1:15 pm, this week individuals workouts anywhere from 2-5 lasting about 45 minutes. (Most girls stay on the field longer to get extra work in)

After workouts usually at least an hour or two of study tables.

7pm most girls head back to softball complex to hit in small groups.

    9pm more studing

10 to 11 pm in bed.

This is Monday, Wednesday or Friday for her, Tuesday and Thursday are not quite as bad but close.

Sounds like a lot of fun!!

But it seems like she is really enjoying it so lets hope it stays that way!!

  6. I can't speak for any of the other coaches, particularly in other sports, but nearly all of the coaches listed above were para-professional coaches (non-teachers). Running a program is a challenge when you aren't based on campus. Even with a sport like softball, it is a huge time commitment for very little pay. You don't do this for the money. I resigned after the 2010 season entirely because of increased responsibilities with my "real job", and there was no way I could any longer be at school at 3:45 to run practice, get the field ready for games, ride the bus to away games, etc. I did return in 2011 as an assistant when coach Neutz offered me the job, which had a lot more flexibility in terms of time requirements. I'd like to think I'd still be the head coach if carving out a living in the real world and raising a family weren't things that needed to be considered. Coaching at North was a great experience. I live in the area and love it when people see me an still call me coach. Eric B.
Coach, I have to disagree with you on one point. My father was a teacher and with the time he put in both at school and at home I can't imagine him being able to put in the time it takes to coach high school softball. My hat is off to any teacher that coaches a high school sport as well. Teacher or Para-Professional first requirement to coach Softball or Baseball, you must be willing to work 16 hour days from February to June.
  7. Yes, it is very common for players to look for travel ball teams outside of northern kentucky. It seems you sometimes need an organizations name to make it into invite tournaments, sad but true. It would be great to have a strong organzation in northern kentucky that provided great opportunities to compete at a higher level of travel ball. Hawks, Static, Doom, and not to mention the outstanding teams north of Dayton, Ohio. Also, some players travel great distances to play on premier select teams.
Sure I understand. Just thought it was strange that basically the whole team was made up of KY kids and EMR has always fielded strong teams with Indiana based kids. Says quite a bit for that group of girls.
  8. I agree with that and mentioned that in my post but sure does suck for GC kids bc it seems like no one wants them, NKY, Louisville, Central Kentucky no one will claim them! They have several players that can play the game.
To be fair to the Enquirer I would guess 95%+ of their readers are in Boone, Kenton and Campbell counties and they are in the business of serving their readers. GC could force the issue a little by turning in all scores to the Enquirer and also the Post. I'm not sure if they are even included in the Stats and Coaches poll listings. I just don't think they had much to go on with the all-star team. In my mind it was more of a "hey we know you have some fine players down there, just wanted to give them a nod".
  9. I did not see the paper which also included the honorable mentions, but was Gallatin even included? I believe the Enquirer has set their boundaries and not included Gallatin. This is a matter of geography not respect. GC is probably the early favorite for the 8th next year and I would think 3 of the top ten players are from Gallatin. I'm not sure how much I matter, but they certainly have my respect.
OK, I did see that GC was included, I am going to give the Enquirer the benefit of the doubt and say it is a lack of coverage because of geography.
  10. Bc there are some really bad coaches in the area and even worse people who didn't vote for her bc of the things that happened at Ryle.

Congrats to all who made the list.

Off the top of my head I would have had Sydney Himes (sp?) from Connor on the list first team and Hannah Dossett from GC also. I understand the enquirer doesn't see Dossett much but to my knowledge she is the only player in the NKY area with a D1 offer right now. I think Dossett will fill the shoes of Moran as being a D1 player that gets passed over for awards while receiving them in the sport she will not be attending in college. Funny how that happens.

  11. I would think any AD could...all they have to do is make it part of their job requirement. My boss makes me do all kind of things I don't want to do that's a lot harder than joining an association.

Maybe we should focus our energy on the AD's...I am not a fan of parents running things but in this case I think they should know its important for our kids.

Bottom line... you could force them to join but that still does not guarantee they will vote. There just isn't much unity in this area like there is in other parts of the state. I have seen the best players in this state and there are players in this area that are just as good, we just do not have the depth here that teams in other parts of the state have. What has to be done is coaches need to look at the best players and teams and vote for them and hopefully when the situation is reversed they can expect the same.
