  1. Now LABs, that's not a valid excuse. You know better. Limiting the # of athletes you can even recruit can't possibly be a factor in ND not being able to compete with the USC's and Florida's of the world...:sssh:

    Interesting point...

    Bob Davie (1997-2001): 35-25 (.583)

    Ty Willingham (2002-2004): 21-15 (.583)

    Charlie Weis (2005-2009): 35-27 (.564)

Bob Davie - promoted from within

Ty Willingham - hot name among the college ranks

Charlie Weis - hot name among the NFL ranks

Three different guys, three different backgrounds, same result. Makes you wonder if the Irish are looking in the wrong place for a restoration to glory.

More lenient academic admissions when Holtz was there...

    Just sayin'...

But, I'm sure its all coincidence.

Two of the three above never coached a down in college football prior to coming to ND. I think that was the biggest problem. I will say Kelly is the hot name now, but he has proven he can win at the college level. I think they have the recruits, just need a good coach.

  2. If UC would have lost today I have a feeling that BK would be gone. With that being said, he's done more at UC the past two seasons than ND has done in 20 years. What he's done in Clifton has been tremarkable.

I think he has done as much as he can at Uc. He goes undefeated and still not playing in the national championship game. He does that at ND and odds are he is playing in the title game.

  3. You know I have to say this... :sssh:

Once again, the playoffs are dominated by the "old" traditional 2A teams. The predictions NewCath, Danville, and Bardstown would "dominate" the reconstituted class were/are just plain WRONG.

While these teams have been great additions (and make 2A even stronger), the bulk of the class's strength was there before the re-alignment. Contrary to popular opinion at the time, 2A was NOT a "weak sister" in the old classification.

    :thumb:

I guess New Cath making the state game the first two years in their new class wasn't just shy of domination.

New Cath was down a bit this year, but they will be back strong next year.

  4. My son and I are struggling with the online play. We'll tear you up on World at War, but we're getting smoked in MW2. Might be because we haven't played enough yet. But it's a much faster pace than WAW. Tips? Thoughts?

Camp, play team deathmatch and use cold blooded/ninja.

This formula is usually good for a few kills until you get used to the speed. Have your teammate set up behind you to watch your back and just pick off the enemy that run by. After a few kills stay in the same area but find a different hiding spot. When the guy that you killed earlier comes looking for you after he respawns you can kill him again from another angle.

  5. I'd be interested in seeing this article.

    Here you go.

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/highschool/11/04/no.punting.ap/index.html

    "Let's take an example.

According to his data, a team that takes over the ball at its opponent's 10 or closer has a 92 percent chance of scoring a touchdown. A team that gains possession between its opponent's 40-yard line and its 31 has a 77 percent chance of scoring a touchdown.

So, Kelley figures, even if the Bruins fail to convert, he is only increasing his opponents' chances of scoring a TD by 15 percentage points more than if his team got off a decent punt. So why not go for it on fourth-and-8 from your own 6?

And, it should be noted, the Bruins convert about 50 percent of the time."

  6. Some of the threads have talked about some teams having relatively weak kicking/punting games, and other teams having pretty solid kick/punt-returning abilities.

If a team with pretty bad/unreliable kicking and punting games is due to play a team with a very good return game, would that team ever consider NEVER punting or trying a FG attempt during the entire game (i.e. just "going for it" on every fourth down)? I think that high school teams (as opposed to college and pro teams) are more prone to going for it on fourth downs, but would a prep team ever decide to abandon the kicking/punting game altogether? Of course, you can't get around having to kick off at the start of each half and after scores.

The call in the Patriots-Colts game also had me thinking about this.

I'll have to look for the article, but while in the waiting room in the doctors office i read a Sports Illistrated article about this topic. They interviewed a high school coach out west(can't remember where) that never punts or kicks field goals, no matter what his field position is. He doesn't even carry a punter/field goal kicker on the roaster. His winning percentage was pretty good and he actually won a state championship a couple years ago. He based this coaching style on a bunch of stats that he had prepared. I thought he was crazy at first, but after looking at the numbers, i almost agree with him.

  7. Question for everyone: How many times do we hear of a "cancer" in a winning locker room?

New England has made a living picking up "cancers". Funny how playing on a winning team will change an attitude.

That being said, i dont have a problem signing him for league minimium and putting him out there. Any sign of problems and you cut him.

  8. Still on my first XBox 360, and as I think I've posted in another thread, the only PS3 owner I know, his PS3 broke within months of buying it. I think there's one person I personally know that has had any issues, and it was the E74 issue with the graphics. For all I know, he caused that himself by modding his XBox, and he doesn't have to worry about that now because he got caught in the latest waves of banning.

This is the first time i've actaully heard of an xbox owner sticking up for its quality while putting down Sony. I do think xbox does a good job at getting reconditioned consoles to their customers.

Just doing a quick search, there are a few threads about xboxs that fail. I cant find to many complaints about Sony.

  9. . And we're going to send the other one off. This will be my 3rd XboX. And do not tell me to get a PS3 because I will buy 10 xbox's before I get a PS3. None of my friends play PS3, and the competition isn't as stiff as xbox.

Have fun sending in for your used 5 and 6th xbox over the next year.

I'm still on my original ps3, going on year two now.

Not sure about your competition comment. The few times a month i play cod on my brothers xbox, i dont see any difference in competition.

  10. So let me get this straight.

The Steelers are coming off a huge win in Denver, playing at home against a heated rival, and you want Bengals fans to take a straight up challenge without the spread? Wow.

Its going to be a tough game for the Bengals to win, I'll admit that.

That being said, I would take it if you were giving points to the Bengals.

  11. I still think the Ratbirds are getting by on smoke and mirrors, and that they are an old team that gets way more hype than deserved, a lot of that due to that silly barking crap that Ray Lewis does.

The Bengals are a lot better than most years, but they took advantage of a mediocre team today. And as I said before, a half a season does not a complete turnaround make. There's a lot of games left the Bengals could lose. And Lord knows they know how to do it.

The same Ratbirds team that shoud have beat the Vikings if for not a missed field goal at the end, they also stomped the undefeated Broncos last week. I'd say they are more than smoke and mirrors, i think the Bengals just match up well against them.

  12. But it's the kids ND has to recruit with their higher academic standards and then Navy beats them 2 out of 3 kinda blows that excuse out of the water.

Fat boy has been taking the heat the last year or two, not higher academic standards. The recruits are here, just need a coach.

  13. I had COD 4 and it was amazing. You can play online & it's truly addicting. The 1st week or so you'll get dominated & will get killed all of the time. Then, you'll start beating up on the other newbies and it'll be a lot more fun.

COD 4 is the best game I've ever played. I bought the next one (the last one released) and have played it less than 3 times. It seems like a cool game, but I just had too much going on.

For those same reasons, I won't be buying this one; however, I wish I could.

Don't buy it if you don't have time to play it for hours. :D

You might want to buy this game.

Infinty Ward made Cod4, but they were not involved with the next game.(World at War)

Infinity Ward is back for this new one.

  14. I've never bought a game like this, but was thinking about it. Why should I get this? I usually only get sports games for my PS3

Its fun to come home after a stressful day, get online and shoot people. I would recommend playing the team hardcore deathmatch. Basically 6 vs 6. If you have a few buddies online, you can teamup with them and blow people up and talk smack. Great stress reliever.

I have my game pre-ordered but wont have time to get it until after work on Tuesday.

I have a few buddies that already have Modern Warefare 2 and are playing it now.

  15. Last weekend I made some of the best ribs I have ever ate. And everyone who ate them agreed. I bought them on thursday, rubbed on some cajun, garlic powder, onion powder, and brown sugar. Let them sit in the fridge until saturday. On saturday I added some apple slices(stolen idea from Jim Schue) put them in the oven on 225 degrees around 11am. Around 5:45 that evening I pulled them out lathered them up in bbq sauce and put them on the grill for around a half hour. Turned out great! So great i'm going to be doing it again this weekend:thumb:

Thats pretty much how i cook them. Never any complaints and the meat falls right off the bone.

  16. Too weird, after reading this thread I'm starving for ribs. Unknown to me (the Mrs. does not know BG preps exists), the wife goes out and buys a slab of ribs that Fred Flintstone would envy!!! Trying something a little different tonight. They are in the crock pot right now with a little spice on them waiting to be torched up on the grill at around 6:00 tonight for the final touch with a little BBQ sauce. Yummy--can't wait!

This sounds close to the the way i usually cook them. Four hours at no more than 200 degree heat. Take them straight to a hot grill, slab bbq sauce on them and let them cook for fifteen or so minutes. Usually they are fall off the bone tender. Wish i had the time to cook them like Jim Schue does though.

  17. Did up a rack yesterday. Slow-cooked for about 10 hours, with lots of hickory chips mixed with the charcoal for plenty of smoke. Mixed up a rub of cajun seasoning, onion, garlic and a few other things, then applied brown sugar later and apple slices after that. Candy apple spice ribs would be a big seller at local restaurants. Yum.

I've got another rack thawing out and am going to whip something else together for tonight. :ylsuper:

Just curious, do you remove the membrane on the bone side of the rib before cooking?

  18. Charlie has done a good job this year, but i do have one complaint.

Why didnt he use his last time out with about 25 seconds left. Instead he left the clock run which in turn only left him with two quick plays to try and find the endzone.
