  1. Came here to post this. Guy should go ahead and look for a new job now. I'm sure he's got plenty of options tho... seems like a pretty rational guy.

    :idunno:

Grabbing a teenage girl by the hair and throwing her down? Check.

Pulling a gun on some unarmed kid? Check.

Looks like lots of people in the video were just concerned for her and his roughing her up got everyone worked up even more.

Then again, I can't really say what this guy is thinking because I've never pulled a gun on a kid either, so there's that.

Guy looks like a lawsuit waiting to happen, but what do I know? Cue the "most officers do their job right"... "but black people..." chorus.

Things like this are why black people don't trust police and why most of the public now wants officers wearing body cams.

When the body cam thing becomes a reality, police should just go ahead and blame their own bad eggs for it, not the public.

Thankfully the other officers there seemed to be trying to protect the people... sadly, it was from one of their own. Either way, I commend them for doing the right thing and standing up to the guy.

  2. Just a hunch, but I like the Golden State/Houston under tonight.

*Then I just looked it up and GS has only went over twice in the last 10 games, so maybe not the safest. Something still tells me under though. Houston lays down, Curry is a little banged up, maybe that's enough to keep it down.

  3. No one will believe me, but I told my roomie last night to play Houston's moneyline when I saw the spread was so low.

I obviously didn't see this blowout, but thought it was good to try to get your own juice on Houston because they'll win or get blown out.

  4. I believe that there are more non-athlete students working off their tuition than athletes simply because those involved in athletics do not often have the time available after school to work. I would also guess than many are not earning minimum wage and I'm not suggesting that they are eligible to be paid minimum wage.

And those aren't the ones I'm talking about either.

  5. Name the schools that give a family $6,000 a year to sweep the halls.

I could name some but won't. It isn't $6K per to sweep the steps, but there are plenty of schools that you can actually see kids working off their tuition with your own eyes. Some have kids taking tickets up at the doors or doing similar type things working middle school games, others have arrangements with churches for them to work there. Know that these opportunities probably wouldn't be given to some of them if they weren't athletically talented. I'm not hating on it or anything and think it's good for the kids, but yes, "work study" might as well be a scholarship.

I think it's naive to think that it doesn't get a little seedy at times if you looked at the "per hour" rate. That isn't commentary on any school in particular, just being realistic about it.

  6. I'd like to make something clear that I think would help people understand what's going on at some places:

No, there aren't "scholarships", at least like people are thinking. What is in place, however, are "work-study" programs that can really help offset the amounts owed. I'm sure that the vast majority of these kinds of plans are completely on the up and up and an athlete is "paid" the same amount in tuition as a good student who does the same job.

I would also guess that if a program wanted to use these as a means of really helping a talented athlete get in (which is great for the kids), then it's probably a vehicle for doing so.

At the same time, that isn't really the most level playing field and work study programs could basically be used in much of the same manner as many are thinking "scholarships" might be being used now.

I have no idea of the situation at University Heights, and am not speaking to it specifically, but do know that there are schools in the state that employ work-study programs and that those have opportunities available for athletes and students alike.

  7. I don't blame them for not wanting to participate given. That's their choice and the way it sets up with the entirety of the situation, both scheduling and the other parts, makes it seem as though it's just disadvantageous to them all around.

I'm not really sure that UHA is the type of program that the "All A" was designed for (especially if they aren't going to allow Cordia).

Put enough UHA's in regions throughout the state and watch the All A quickly dissipate.

Whether everyone wants to admit it or not, the All A was designed for the schools like those in the 2nd that are leaving it and some of the smaller privates in urban areas that will have no chance of competing with the city schools. Taking the intent that the tournament was designed with and stretching every rule to the limit to dominate teams that are playing it straight isn't very endearing.

  8. Just comparing this situation to prior instances of him throwing up what you called "gang signs". In those instances, you referred to them as gang signs but failed to reference what they meant. Just trying to make the connection between his signs and gang affiliation, which you and others have now made clear. Thanks.

No problem. All that he's "throwing"/"stacking" are pretty known Bloods signs. The one in post #65 looks like he's making the "CK" with his hands, which is "Crip Killer". Not that I actually think he's killed Crips, just that some of the stuff he throws up isn't the kind of thing I'd advise people to go around doing. This is coming from someone who lives in a city where there's a much larger gang presence than probably most anywhere in Kentucky.

You can Google lots of terms like "gang signs", "blood gang signs", stuff like that and see a similarity to what it looks like he's doing.

  9. Garunteed there will be no White House representatives at her funeral.

    The reason

    1. She was not Black

    2. She wasn't breaking the law

    3. She was killed by a thug.

Obama's racial motives don't support an innocent cop being killed by African American law breaking thug.

    Wenjian Liu?

    Rafael Ramos?

  10. No it wasn't. I feel it is a legitimate question.

I was hoping for an adult conversation on the topic. I think Joker gave a very good response.

Thanks, much appreciated. I know it probably surprises people, but I really do respect good police officers and think that they are underpaid for what they do. There are bad eggs in every profession that always get the press, but I've interacted with plenty of officers that I felt were good people who were great at what they do.

  11. All police don't have these magic union reps that can get them out of everything, you realize that right?

Trust me, I do. Honestly, if I were an officer in some situations, I would be running to hire my own attorney instead of rolling with my union rep.

I was just making the point that as compared to an indigent client or something like that, they have things a bit better. There's also some cases where clearing the officer lessens the chances of liability against the department and the like, so there's some incentive to clear them and find back channels to get rid of them.

Not saying it's widespread or anything like that, but as a union, they have some advantages that non-unions members don't.

  12. Eligible to play immediately LaVonne Holland. He attended Ballard high school. Averaged 14 points per at Coffeyville Community College last season and will have 3 years of eligibility remaining.

I'm sure he has improved since high school but did anyone get the chance to see him play during his Ballard days? Sounds like a nice pickup for the Norse, I'd like to see them add a few more JUCOS.

NKU Men's Basketball Adds Another Piece to the Roster | The River City News

Remember him from Ballard. Nice player who'll bring some things to the table if he put in the work during JUCO.

  13. Plenty of police are charged, tried etc when evidence shows the police broke the law.

Gotcha. I would also agree with saying that there are even police who are innocent and who are convicted because of circumstance. Our system isn't perfect, and while the chances of it happening to an officer (who has a union rep) might be slimmer than it happening to someone who gets an over-worked court appointed attorney or just gets a bad draw on the wheel, I don't doubt for a minute that it happens as well.

  14. I'm coming around on Towns over Okafor some, but I think the franchise they go to and what else you have there is part of that as well. There you go @gametime. It takes a lot to convince me (because I know I'm always right, even initially), but you and everyone else are starting to wear on me and the more I hear, the more convinced I become. Like you said, one skill and people are burying their heads in the sand around the rest. Okafor will have to improve defensively for sure, and he probably has the capacity to and will work off some of the baby fat, but he's still got some work to do.

I think D'Angelo Russell goes at #3 . Of most of the prospects, I think he is what he is at this point in time. That isn't meant as a really good or really bad thing. Unless he grows, he's going to be a tweener 1/2. In the NBA, he might struggle to defend the 2 and doesn't have the kind of handle and instincts as a facilitator to be a true 1. Nothing wrong with that, because James Harden is the same way. Not saying that Russell has the same career as Harden, just making the point that a tweener with lots of talent can succeed.

Mudiay is probably going to New York at #4 , but I honestly don't know what to make of him not working out. If it's an injury being masked, then that's going to hurt. He's a wildcard. Apparently he's not pleased front offices by not working out, etc. Maybe that's changed since I've been able to look at news (it's been a few days), but I would think that after an injury and playing in an unknown league, executives would want to see the goods. I'd think that if he's in the conversation with the top 3, he goes into workouts and tries to prove it and knows that regardless he won't drop past #4 . Not really sure how his hand is being played, and things seem to be fairly close to the vest.

Don't know a ton about Hezgona, but from what I've read, I don't see him dropping past the #7 , and know he's probably going to go much higher. His workouts apparently helped him and have seemingly eased some concerns.

As far as two UK go, I'm more sold on Trey Lyles' being a sure thing than WTCS' potential. Wish the best for both of them, but if my team is sitting at #7 or so, and with no trade possibilities and all else held equal, I'd rather see my team draft Lyles.

Lots of Myles Turner's stock will depend on how his medicals check out (some people are thinking he runs funny because it's compensating for an injury, his camp says it's not that and he's working on his form/mechanics). He played for Rick Barnes, who didn't know how to use him at all and took until around January to figure out that he could play him and Ridley together, so anyone's guess is probably just as good as analyzing everything.

Have questions about Stanley Johnson's overall game. If I were drafting him, I'd want to work him out more than once, and it's not because of his athleticism.

Think Justice Winslow is solid but not spectacular. He's a safe pick in the same mold as I think of Trey Lyles (more later). Didn't measure well but he's still able to stick open jumpers and athletic enough to finish at the rim in the league. It'd be great if he had a mid-range game, but probably one of those things that basically is what it is at this point. You know what you are getting: it's not a superstar, but it's not a complete bust either.

Unsure about Oubre. He's a hugely volatile guy. Tools are there but he has a vibe about him that kind of makes you wonder. I've seen tons of Big XII games down here and will stand by saying that he doesn't react well when things aren't going his way (and that's putting it mildly). Tons of fouls out of frustration when he's off, forcing shots when they aren't falling, all that. However, when he's on, he can really go. He's young enough that if he matures, the talent is there, but he's also young enough that if he's put in a toxic locker room, he's possibly out of the league by his second contract.

Hardly know anything about Cameron Payne, so I'll admit it and punt.

Love RJ Hunter and think he's golden with the right fit. He's going to wind up going later than Booker, but brings a lot of the same things to the table. Shooter, long wingspan, good quickness for his size in side-to-side drills.

Booker is a wild card. When people look back at his career, one of the biggest variables is where he winds up going. Too early to the wrong franchise and are really risking. For he and Hunter, I think the best thing to happen to them would be sliding late to a playoff team. Put either on a team like the Celtics or Jazz, who pick in the mid-teens, and they don't look too hot because they will struggle to create their own shot. Let them slide to a team like the Wizards or Rockets, who pick in the early 20's and who already have their stars and core in place, and then you probably see them thrive because they can come in early and do what they do well and won't be asked to do tons else. Not trying to hate, but if UK fans are thinking Booker is going to come in to a team where he's asked to defend NBA 2's as a rookie and will just kill it, you'll be in for a long year. Not that he's bad defensively, just that really defending a good NBA 2 well is probably one of the hardest things to do in professional sports.

In the long term, I'm not sold on Kaminsky being anything more than a second unit offensive cog or a guy who starts for a few years on a really bad team. I don't know that he can defend at the next level and am unsure of how he even fares when he's not getting away with murder without being whistled (that's not sour grapes from the UK loss, you can look at my post history and see me talking about that well before then).

Not in love with Bobby Portis for many of the same reasons as WCS; really good defender with length and quickness, but if he isn't dunking the ball, he's not scoring. Given where he's projected to go right now, I don't see him living up to the hype.

I would pass on Sam Dekker as well. Seems to be something missing and think he's one of these guys who'll be a combine freak capable of having big games, but isn't someone you want to count on each night.

Love Jerian Grant, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, and to a lesser extent, Kevon Looney, if you have a pick (and/or need) in the late teens or early twenties.

Looney played way out of position too often this past season at UCLA, but can see his skill set making him one of those guys who is a better pro than college player.

Would love to see my team take Jerian Grant around the range he's projected to go right now if there's any type of team need at all.

Like Montrezell Harrell as a second unit guy on a good team, which is enough to keep you in the NBA for a decade if you play it right. Same goes for Dakari Johnson as a back-up center. People can laugh at that or whatever, but ask a team like the Clippers how it is to try and compete in the NBA when you can only go 6 or 7 deep-- not happening.

  15. So even when there's no evidence to suggest the police were wrong, you want them arrested and tried in front of a jury? Yeah...that's not how our system works. Police have rights too...

And the ignorant comment about the thin blue line always defending their own is well...ignorant. Plenty of police are charged, arrested and tried when evidence shows they are wrong.

Just for clarification, and not trying to be argumentative, but do you mean they are wrong as in they are wrongfully prosecuted or as in they were criminally responsible?

  16.

I think for there to be widespread outrage or protests, there'd have to be a significant amount of people who sympathize with the person who killed a mother in cold blood. I doubt many people are cheering. I think it's safe to say that the vast majority think that this is a heinous crime and saddening.

If this were a case where the killer wasn't prosecuted for whatever reason, or got by with only a reduced charge, then maybe there'd likely be more avenue for that kind of thing.

I'm not exactly sure what people would be protesting here though. Maybe to use the event to raise awareness that this kind of thing happens too often (or more often than people want to realize)?, or maybe to say that all lives should matter equally? Ok, then maybe I'm buying it, but even then I'm not sure a protest is really the best means to an end of what you want to accomplish.

I can be pretty cynical and overly critical, but there's no way you'll hear me saying, "she deserved to die because she signed up for a dangerous job", or "what happened isn't really that tragic", anything like that.

  17. Also, I only "compared" them to the 2013 team in saying that they could win up closer to that finish than the 2011 one. I'd consider out in the Sweet 16 to be in between those two.

Like 2013, next year's overall talent from top to bottom is a bit down, so that helps. Even 2011 lost quite a few games, and I suspect next year's team could lose 7 or 8.

My biggest concern with next year's team is that the staff was still out going hard after Swanigan, Vick, guys like that. It tells me that they think there are holes in our roster that need filled badly, because they seem to be popping up with lots of available bodies.

If we get Murray, then my analysis will change some, but there's still an issue with three of our four most talented players being smaller guards.

  18. Which is why I was saying your statement of this years team being closer to the 2013 NIT is a little crazy. This coming years UK team resembles the 2011 final four team much more than the 2013 NIT. As you just posted that 2011 team did have some talent, and also had experience. Sounds a lot like this years upcoming team to me.

Cool. Maybe you got a point, we'll see in the season. I hope I'm dead wrong and that UK is demolishing people. Would love nothing more than to be wrong about this.

  19. Yeah, was the Brandon Knight team considered "stocked"?

Wouldn't really consider them "stocked" without Kanter, but they did have:

Brandon Knight (5*, McDonald's All American and in the running for best player/best PG in his class, top 5 in his class),

Terrence Jones (5*, McDonald's All American, top 10 in class),

Doron Lamb (McDonald's All American, top 20 player in his class),

DeAndre Liggins (4*, #28 in his class),

    Darius Miller (4*, Top 40 in his class);

3 McDonald's All-Americans, though freshman, who were top 5, 10, and 20-25 in their class, and a couple of Juniors who were in the 30's and 40's in their classes isn't a bad start.

Poole was a freshman but another guy who was a top 50 guy too. Out of high school, Vargas was a 4*, top 50 guy as well. Harrelson was offered by Illinois, Iowa, Iowa State, and a few schools when he got his release. Throw in them getting to practice against Kanter and it's not exactly as if they were hurting for talent. I'm sure plenty of teams would love to have those kinds of numbers.

A better way to describe it might be that they weren't "stocked" by Kentucky, North Carolina, or Duke standards, but it isn't as if you see many teams with 3 McDonald's All Americans, seven guys who were top 50 in their high school class, six of which eventually play in the NBA, on the same college team and think "no talent".
