  1. Sour grapes? I can't speak for the Morris family, but I can assure you there are no sour grapes. The fact of the matter is, more and more kids are declining invites to these things due to the politics involved. And yes, I know for a fact that politics has been a factor in the process before. You are correct, these things are an honor...............when the best kids are chosen. Right now in the softball side of things, many of the best kids in the state are not included in the Jr/Sr East/West All Star games due to their affiliation with a certain club team......but that's for another thread.

Would you please elaborate? I've read term "politics" several times on this thread, and would like to know how "politics" is defined in each case. I'm neither defending nor bashing the selection process, but would like to know of the better ways that some contributors might have. [0[/I]/I]

  2. Amy Siegel hired at Assumption. Played at Assumption and Bellarmine and has been in college coaching for 8-10 years including a 2 year stint at Bellarmine. Mostly an assistant but did head coach St. Joseph's for 2 seasons. Most recently an assistant at Spalding.

Cool beans! Best of luck to Coach Siegel and the Rockets.

  3. ... Tidbits from other web sites and multiple conversations ...

... North Bullitt - Amber Courtney out to Bardstown, Dave Marion in from Spencer Co.

... Meade Co. - Josh Hurt out to Metcalfe Co.

... Assumption - What the heck is going on there? Hmmmmm.

  4. Well it's that time of year when high school basketball gets in full swing over the summer time period. It's a great time to evaluate talent and help the girls work on their weaknesses. As the saying goes Championship are won in the summer!

Is this a good thing or a bad thing letting high school basketball coaches work their teams in the summer?

    Pros/Cons?

    Pros-

For those high school coaches who are willing to put in the time and invest in the SKILL DEVELOPMENT of their players, is a fantastic opportunity to "build" better players. And the best coaches I know do this at no expense to the players, other than the time and sweat equity that the players invest. Drive, desire, and determination determine if/how much each player will improve.

    Cons-

The potential burn-out factor, first to the coaches, and second to the players. A reasonable number of games can be a good thing, but not at the expense of skill development. Kids need the opportunity to be kids, so a happy medium, which is hard to determine, needs to be reached. Plus, kids ought to be able to play multiple sports, if they can balance them well.

  5. The population triangle for the Commonwealth is NKY>LOU>LEX. Anything held within that triangle is going to get be better attended because there's a bigger population to draw from.

With that logic alone, the YUM! and Rupp would be no-brainers, and Louisville and Lexington would have been regularly hosting the event. But we have not seen that happening. I have wondered for the past few years if and when the BOK/NKU would make a run at this event, and now we it has come to fruition. The schools and teams in northern Kentucky are strong and have good traditions, but I've not noticed much interest or support from northern Kentucky regarding the happenings around the state in girl's basketball. On some other older threads, the lack of interest by northern Kentucky kids in recent years to participate has been noted, so we'll see if the fan turn-out counters that pattern. It will be a much shorter drive for many eastern Kentucky schools.

It's actually economic competition that is driving this, and we'll see how it goes. I cannot help but think that BG/WKU will come to wish for a "do-over," that they will regret the loss of this economic cash cow for the entire community. Historically, forward-thinking civic leaders have succeeded in "landing" the railroads, or building bridges, or constructing the interstate highways in order to boost their communities. NKU has done just that at WKU's expense.

  6. BIG job in Louisville coming open.........word is trickling out now.......7th region going to be all shook up over the last couple of years except for coach moir at SHA.

Do tell, do tell. Can't wait to learn who it will be. Very interesting!

  7. And now the motion has been passed for NKU to host it in 2016 and 2017.

It now has to be approved by the BOC.

Why the "fix???" Was the girls' sweet 16 broken??? BG, WKU and Houchens Industries seemed to embrace it warmly and well and put on a good show for years. NKU certainly has great facilities, but if Louisville can't get the event and make it work, why in the heck is it in northern Kentucky (er, almost Ohio)? Maybe there will be enough financial backing to grease the wheels. My guess is that CASH MUST BE THE MAIN REASON ... it often is. At any rate, if it really does leave BG/WKU, I thank them for their southern hospitality for these past few years - I loved it there. Time marches on and change happens.

  8. Then you are living in fantasy land. It is crazy and in some cases very true...

It sounds as though this coaching job has become RADIOACTIVE. Too bad, as it used to not be. Applicants need beware, but there are always young guns who are cocky and self-assured climbers who are more than willing to plunge ahead. The smiling faces who welcome you to town may well be the frowning faces who put a for sale sign in your yard without consulting you beforehand. :arghh::deadhorse:

  9. Kids in Indiana are more locked in to thinking that this series is a big deal, so they show up and participate. For some reason that is foreign to me, Kentucky coaches and players are not supporting this in an appropriate way. Illness or medical emergencies, funerals, etc. are reasonable reasons to not participate, but that hasn't been the case in most cases. How can kids and coaches be blowing off this, the granddaddy of border all-star games? I just don't get it, sorry. And taking pot-shots at the process and selection people is way off target, and is very bad form. Folks who think that they have the silver bullets need to pitch in and volunteer - the Bluegrass Sports Commission and the KLEF, I'm sure, are always looking for volunteers with bright ideas.

  10. Not many are filled. CAL is a curious job - any hints of timing or favorites?

The fact that the CAL is seeking a new coach has me baffled. This season Coach Rice did a great job of melding a team that was rebuilding and seemed challenged at the season's outset, into one of the better teams in the 7th region by tourney time. CAL had Eastern dead-to-rites in the district tourney, despite some injuries to a key player or two. Best of luck to Coach Rice, who had an extremely successful run, and to his successor, whoever that might be. Year in and year out, the 28th district is arguably the toughest district, in the toughest region, in the state.

  11. Someone mentioned seeing this young person and a family member at the SHA bench in the midst of the post-game party after the region final.

This (what you above) is the only clue you get, sorry. Not cool, not fair, not proper, and totally not right at all IF/WHEN the athlete might be/is on the team that is competing against the other team. Whoa, hold on now!!! Please think long and hard about all of the possible complications contained in said scenario.

It's just plain sad that it's become soooooo difficult to simply be a kid, and that purely playing the game has become a thing of the past. Many folks still want sports to provide a bit of a refuge for themselves or their kids, but I guess that has become too naïve of an outlook.

Of the girls listed above, which of them played against Indiana's junior all-star team last year? Also, how did the Kentucky girls perform in last year's game, and what does anyone know about Indiana's class of seniors this year?

  14. I'd be careful with your language about "if they were such great coaches"...

Coach Wright left Mercer to coach boys in Indiana then moved back to Kentucky where he spent 8-9 seasons as South Oldham's head girls coach and lead them to several regional finals. He also coached at least one D-1 player at South Oldham. He is currently the girls head coach at Butler and lead them to the regional finals and had them ranked in the state's top 20 all season.

Stacey Hall left Mercer and has gone on to be a pretty darn successful AD at Marion County. He also coached Mercer to their only 12th region title.

If memory serves me correctly Greg Edwards was the coach at Harrodsburg when they won the 12th region and made a strong run in the state tournament. If he didn't lose a vital piece to his team this year to an ACL injury Boyle would have been a solid contender (girls).

You can't ignore facts. Mercer county has run off a lot of very good coaches.

One thing should be remembered when it comes to coaching vacancies. - "There are more bad jobs than there are bad coaches." It is interesting when a particular coaching position is regularly vacant, and when no coach seems to stay there for more than two or three years, or when a five-year stint is considered a long stay. Now this is not to say that Mercer Co. is a bad place to coach - don't the girls' coaches stay there for long stints? Another thing to consider is that when a coach does decide to leave, it doesn't always mean that the parents drove him (or her) away. Coaches leave for many other reasons - finances, family, opportunity/advancement, burn-out, health, a better teaching situation. However, I anticipated that the merger of Harrodsburg and Mercer Co. would have created a 12th region powerhouse by now, but it appears that's not the case. What a pity this is. Anyway, good luck to the Scotties/Pioneers/Hogs/Titans, regardless of who takes the reigns. Evidently, it's a tall challenge to bring all of the factions into a united Titans' tent.
