  1. It was a great performance by the Lady Saints. I was very disappointed from the poor sportsmanship I saw from the Bracken players. Intentional pushing and elbowing not very good sportsmanship. As for the fans encouraging this behavior, what are you teaching these girls. I can't say this for all the bracken girls. K.Meyers did display class, maybe a few of her teammates need to watch her and learn.

I noticed on one possession and I dont even remember who had the ball but Meyers and one of the Payne sisters got there feet tangled up around half court nobodys fault and both almost hit the floor but the saved each other and had a nice little laugh at it. I think thats how it should be done. A lot of class and respect from both players....great job both of you.

  2. Dad, maybe the ref was being evaluated that night by the supervising official and he knew that even if it was just a couple feet away, he would be called on it.

The officials, at least in the BBA, are evaluated by their supervising officials, just like those of us at work are.

Humm well I didnt have a child playing. However if I did I would have told him to pick up the ball. And for his sake he better hope he wasn't being evaluated, but since I know most of the officials and happened to see almost everyone coming in that night I am 99% sure he wasn't, again thats a good thing for him.

  3. Maybe there was some trash talking going on and the ref decided to ask one of them to retrieve the ball....

There was absolutely no trash talking or anything of the sort, like I mentioned in another post it was a very well played game with a lot of sportsmanship from both teams (girls helping each other up and patting on back). I dont know if you have ever been to our gym but if you have I was in the endzone very near the foul lane and you can hear everything said...

Dont get me wrong I respect most officials I have several friends that are officials at all levels, but like someone else on here it just struck me as funny that any official would ask anyone to get the ball when all they would have to do was bend over and get it. He would not even had to take his eyes off the players, the other official did pick up the ball a couple times and no fights broke out. And maybe others on here are right maybe its just unprofessionalism. I think thats a growing problem not only with basketball officials.

  4. Absolutely not! I think players should retrieve balls that have gotten away. I never took my eyes off the players until I was sure everything was in control. The game I was watching was filled with great sportsmanship with girls helping each other up and pats on the back type game. And yes the ball was truly that close to the official.

  5. Officials are not supposed to chase loose balls. That's pretty much the bottom line.

Also, you complain about a "tired" ballplayer having to get the basketball (per the rule) as if the officials aren't tired at all. Perhaps you can join an officials association, learn the rules, and do the job as you see fit.

As it is, I have seen officials MANY TIMES make up for the laziness of teams that, right before the game or before halftime is over, simple toss the loose balls on the court instead of putting them on the rack (this burns me up and the team that I root for is one of the worst at it). Often, as the game hasn't begun, I see the officials get the balls and put them on the rack.

Officials aren't always right. They are, after all, human. But let's not let those of us that don't bother to do the job and don't know the rules like they do diss the vast majority of excellent officials.

I was a member of an officials association, and I do know the rules, and I did the job (and if not for injury would still be) so I feel I can weigh in on this subject. What I witnessed had nothing to do with the rules it had to do with laziness. This particular situation the ref was one step away from the ball but yet had a player walk and pick it up and hand it to him. I remember when refs did this and I dont remember a ton of problems. I think there are a ton of talented and good officials and this had nothing to do with calls. And we do pick up the balls at our school.

  6. Officials are taught to NOT chase a loose ball in ANY sport. In basketball .... if an official goes to get a loose ball and someone in his/her area of responsibility gets elbowed, pushed, jabbed or even spit on.........all will wonder what actually happened. The official responsible to have seen it didn`t ...... all because he was chasing a loose ball during dead ball action. This does look lazy HOWEVER ......please trust me that it is ACTUALLY preventive officiating. Also....alot of times it is really interesting to see how the ball got to where it is at that moment anyway.

I agree they should not chase a loose ball around the court, however in this situation it was pure laziness because all he had to do was take one step sideways and bend over it was literally a couple feet away but he insisted that a very tired player walk to get it. So I guess he was doing preventive officiating when he had his back to the floor talking with someone he knew when he was waiting on a sub to check in.....must be those eyes in the back of there heads. Give me a break some have become lazy not only do they not retrieve the ball they dont hustle up and down the floor or hustle to get in the correct position to make the call.

  7. I have noticed in the past couple of years how officials will not retrieve a loose ball they make the players go after it. I watched a girls game tonight where the ball was only a couple feet from the official but he made a player get it that was lining up on the lane for a free throw and trying to catch a breath at the end of the game after playing very hard the entire game. This to me dont make a lot of sense, these adults are being paid but yet they seem to be hustling less and yet year after year they want an increase in pay. Don't get me wrong I have a tremendous amount of respect for most of the officials its truly a thankless job but a few seem to be giving the whole group a bad name.

  8. Obviously they started off very slow, several girls on the team were not feeling well, plus the five freshman do not get much time as a group on the floor together. It would have been very easy for them to just pack it in for the night but those freshman hate to loose and will fight till the get back into the game. Very proud of them tonight. They are now 3-0 on the season with wins over Bracken and Bishop Brossart as well. The future looks good for a few more years at St Pat.

  9. I mentioned this last week. I don't think she has played. She wasn't at practice last week.

Yes she has played, and not real sure where you heard she wasn't at practice dont think she has missed a practice in a while. She has a different role this year you forget they had a very good player in Chamberlain in the middle last year. Everyones roles have changed to replace three seniors. As the season progress eveyone will get the experience with the new roles and be just fine. I think they look pretty good so far finding ways to win.

  10. Fouls the first half was BC 10 SP 5 second half SP pat was in the double bonus early. And as far as the rough play, StPat fans must wear blinders because it was started by their team. Why was their no National Anthem before the game.

St Pat and Bracken both were in the double bonus within 30 seconds of each other with about 2 min on the clock in the fourth so I dont the St Pat got into the double bonus early, matter of fact we had more fouls called on them for the majority of the second half. Total fouls in the second half were 10 on St Pat and 12 on Bracken ( the last two they were trying to stop the clock).

Again my original point is that girls games in small schools do not get the best officials, and what is the reason? We pay the same for the officials know matter how much experience they have. They dont want a lesser quality official at a game with huge attendance because they do not want their weaknesses exposed.

  11. Fouls the first half was BC 10 SP 5 second half SP pat was in the double bonus early. And as far as the rough play, StPat fans must wear blinders because it was started by their team. Why was their no National Anthem before the game.

With 4 minutes left in fourth quater St Pat had 8 fouls Bracken 4....humm sounds like more fouls being called on St Pat so far this half how did we get in doulbe bonus so early

  12. According to the Ledger Independent article & box score, St. Pat had two players that shot more free throws than the entire Bracken County team (Charisma Payne & Douglas shot 32 to BC's 24). Box score shows St. Pat shooting 42 team free throws.

It's laughable...that a St. Pat fan would accuse any team of being overly aggressive and physical. Seriously, you're one funny dude.

The reason those two players shot so many is because they were fouled on the shot which means 2 shot fouls. St Pat fouls were silly reaching fouls. that means the first 6 dont get shots and you have to hit both to get the second shot bonus until 10 fouls. If you watched the game you would have easily figured this out.
