  1. Reports from Alabama newspapers indicate the Crimson Tide could make a decision perhaps as early as today whether to keep Shula.

Four years ago, Leavitt was offered the Alabama job on two different occasions by Alabama athletic director Mal Moore. When Leavitt didn't accept, Moore hired Mike Price, who was replaced by Shula six months later after Price's much-publicized incident involving exotic dancers.

"Remember Jim Leavitt … who started the football program at South Florida in 1996," The Huntsville (Ala.) Times reported Sunday. "Leavitt, the only coach in Bulls' history, upset Louisville last year and pulled an even bigger surprise this weekend when USF stunned West Virginia. Leavitt was one of the coaches Alabama AD Mal Moore interviewed - and liked very much."

I'm afraid one of these times he's going to accept one of these jobs.

    Leavitt's Work Is Getting Noticed

  2. Florida may have gotten a little boost because South Carolina beat a ranked Clemson team. If USC loses that may help Fla a little bit and then USC would have to lose next week.
I'll be interested in seeing Florida's computer rankings this week. If they don't pick up loads of ground on Michigan, they will have to stomp Arkansas next week (something they haven't done to anybody, but a D1-AA opponent all year). If not, and USC loses, there will definitely be a MU/OSU rematch.
  3. UC/OSU has not been an every year series. And UL has stated several times that the big boys are not interested. If USF were to beat Auburn next year, expect it to get a LOT tougher to schedule the way you want from that day forward. If this conference is going to grow, it will be keyed by all 8 teams being average at worst. There is NO WAY the SEC/Big 11 and so on help us get there...
The nice part is those contracts are signed. Nobody had ever heard of Miami until the first time they beat Oklahoma in Norman. Like Miami, in the early eighties, the teams of the Big East have a chance to shine against top level teams. If it costs future engagements, so be it. Once the reputation is established, the line up of cup cakes can be established and played year in and year out.

I really don't want this year to end. Notice that?

  4. The bottom line though, will be winning against the top half of the other major conferences. That's why I brought up the Auburn game next fall. Although today was a big hoist (Anybody catch Jim Leavitt tearing up?), USF is not ultimately counting on the Big East to lift the program. They will get the respect/recuits they desire by beating the likes of Auburn, Florida, NC State, and Miami, most of whom they play multilple times in the next 5 years.

I'd love to see Louisville take on OSU or Notre Dame. Instead of North Carolina, how about Florida or LSU? How about Texas? Why not? Same goes for West Virginia. Is UC/OSU a regular home and home thing or something that has to be renewed? Pitt needs to get back on Notre Dame's schedule.

  5. Using the BCS rules....

Of the 10 BCS positions available, 6 are taken by the automatic bids of the ACC, Big East, Big 10, Big 12, PAC 10, and Southeastern conferences. That leaves 4.

Notre Dame currently qualifies for an automatic bid by being within the top 8 in the BCS Standings. That leaves 3.

Boise State qualifies for an automatic bid by being in the BCS top 12 and by being ranked higher than any ACC team. Now there is 2.

Michigan automatically gets a BCS bid unless they drop to 5th in the rankings. Championship game or not. That leaves 1 spot for an at-large bid.

If Michigan and Ohio State play in the National Championship game, does the Big 10 get 3 bids? Possibly. The Sugar, Orange, and Fiesta bowls will have to chose from the Big East winner, ND, Boise State, and that lone at-large team. The Sugar will probably take ND, since they had the Big East winner last year. The Orange Bowl will take the Big East Champ, leaving the Fiesta to take Boise State or this at-large team. I look for them to take Boise State (somehow I think they travel well). Now what does the Rose Bowl do? Do you think the Rose Bowl will take a team from the SEC over one from the Big 12? SC vs Texas or SC vs LSU? Hmmmmmmmm........

  6. I got to watch this with about 250 other Bull fans at the USF Hooters. What a crowd. What a game. Clearly the biggest win in the history of the program. Bigger than last year's home win over Louisville.

The D that got lost last week in the second half against the Cards, found itself this week and shut down the vaunted Mountaineer offense. Slaton held to 43 yards. White only rushed for 17 yards on 15 carries.

    Let's party!

  7. Thanks for the clarification...the more I read about these Bulls they are severly underrated...I did read this though:
South Florida receiver Taurus Johnson apparently can see blood in the water. He told the St. Petersburg Times this week that if the Bulls start strong tomorrow night at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium, "then Louisville should fold. The crowd won't be an issue at all."
Last I heard, Taurus was still running laps. I don't think USF is going to catch Louisville napping this year.

"The last couple of days have been difficult," Louisville coach Bobby Petrino said. "You worry about [having played] two emotional games [against West Virginia and Rutgers] and go do it again. This will be a difficult task."

Added Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich: "South Florida manhandled us last year. I don't care what anybody says. After playing West Virginia and Rutgers, if people are thinking South Florida is going to be a walk in the park, they're wrong. Just look what happened last year."

Petrino said he doubts his club needs any reminders.

"We just have to turn on the video and watch last year's game," Petrino said. "You might want to play someone you could step on, to be honest with you. It [last year's loss] will help us get ready."

Even though the Cardinals are again big favorites this year, UL cornerback William Gay, of Tallahassee Rickards, said the Cards won't overlook USF.

"Losing at South Florida hurt me a lot, with me being from Florida," Gay said. "It looked like we looked past South Florida and they were looking forward to us. We're not going to do that this year. No way. We learned our lesson."

  8. ^ Not trying to fuel a fire...but if UC is the only team to slow him down how did Kansas win 13-7?
Grothe had 262 yards of total offense in that game, 196 passing, 66 running, and scored the only touchdown by the Bulls. He had no help, though. The Bulls only had 309 yards of total offense as a team. USF spent that game shooting themselves in the foot. Everytime they'd get a drive going, they'd do something stupid and get a pentalty or they would turn the ball over. An offensive pass interferance (good call) killed a real scoring drive in the 4th. The game ended on an interception in the end zone with the Bulls driving.

Cincinnati held Matt to 57 total yards, 47 passing, 10 rushing.

  9. I wasn't going to say anything and hope the game just snuck by. :D

There's no secret to stopping South Florida. Stop redshirt freshman QB Matt Grothe (pronounced growthy). Cincinnati is the only team to really slow him down this year, and they made him look like a freshman. He gave Rutgers fits. Matt accounted for 409 yards of total offense (Big East season high) last week against Syracuse, 364 passing, 45 running. He did that on a bad wheel that he originally injured in the UConn game and re-injured against Pitt. You could tell it was bothering him last weekend. Grothe didn't have that burst of speed he normally does when running. I love watching this kid. He's made at least one play in every game, except UC, that simply amazed me.

Coach Leavitt dismissed 2 players from the team Monday. Jackie Chambers, a receiver who's been suspended for most of this season and starting offensive left tackle Thed Watson, who was a contender for the Outland trophy early in the year. Substance abuse is suspected.

    For more Bull shtuff ....

  10. I think its amazing that the people who are making $160,000 a year don't want to raise the wages of people making $5.00 something an hour. That's the new America for ya, get what ya can and don't look back.
Those congressmen making that $160 a year represent us middle class schleps who will end up paying for this raise. The new America is just like the old one. Opportunity exists for everyone willing to work for it. Nothing has changed.
  11. Kind of looks like the Dems in both houses should be able to get pretty much of whatever they want. If W wants to be an obstructionist, they can start the investigations.
It takes two-thirds of the senate to vote for conviction. GW's got nothing to worry about. However, please, Ms. Pelosi, start the investigations. Hopefully that will occupy you Democrates enough to keep you away from my wallet.
