  1. I agree, but I think Sargent (Normally Starter) can handle the pressure as well (Most of the time). The young girls can/do a great job (Last Game!). The thing that worries me is that they get hurt so much. Cheesemen has been in out of every game. It all depends how many minutes they can give us. If you have notice they normally get a injury and have to go out for period's at a time, it's hard to count on that. I just hope that they stay strong throughout the game and feed the ball to Hargett/Dixon down-low and Heeger for three's on the outside. If they can do that, I look for Walton to go far. :jump:

Spread the floor, and let the young girls get it up the floor and let Hargett/players finish on the other end. It could be a good line-up out there with those girls playing together! Hope so. Get it done Walton!

That's the key spread the floor stay out of the corners against the Anderson press. If you can get the ball to Cheeseman or Ginn in the middle of the floor they can beat anybody up the floor with the ball. Once they get to the middle the can draw and dish to either Hargett to take it to the hole or Heeger spotting up for the three. One thing I did notice the Walton guards starting to do well that the did not do at all early in the year, is when the defense is over playing them when trying to get the ball in against the press, they are learning to drive toward the ball then releasing allowing a pass overtop of the defense, then they are allready past the first layer of the press. They are deadly after that point with Heeger, Hargett, and Dixon all options at that point.

  2. From Ryan Ernst this morning in blog: Just have to wait and see.

Oh the weather outside is frightful ...

Here's how things are looking in Northern Kentucky, considering the White Death that is upon us:

Ryle athletic director Jim Demler said, as of right now, things will continue as scheduled in the Ninth Region girls' basketball tournament semifinals. Holy Cross will play Conner at 5:30 p.m., followed by Boone County vs. Notre Dame at 8 p.m.

The 10th Region girls’ semifinals at Campbell County Middle School have been moved to Sunday. Harrison County will play Mason County at 2 p.m. and Campbell County will play Montgomery County at 4 p.m. The championship will be played at 7:30 p.m. Monday.

The Eighth Region girls' tournament at Shelby County also has been postponed. Walton-Verona now will play Anderson County at 3 p.m. Saturday, followed by Simon Kenton vs. South Oldham at 4:45 p.m. The finals are scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday.

We'll keep you updated with any additional changes.

I don't see it being any better for the 8th region tommorow with the long trip for Walton. I'll bet that one has to be postponed again.

  3. Disagree a little here. From my vantage point which was at that end of the gym, Hodges was definitely waiting but was under the basket. IMO these should be blocking fouls on the defender because the player goes up for a layup and has nowhere to land.

There were also numerous 3 second violations that were not called against Conner which worked to their advantage as they were able to pass the ball into that area and then kick it out for open looks on the baseline and/or wing.

These were not reasons why Highlands lost the game however. The difference in this game was Kremer and number 15 I believe who probably scored in the neighborhood of 16 to 18 points. Really do not understand why Hope Cutter and Mallory Adler did not see more minutes. Both were very effective when on the floor which IMO was not enough.

Congrats to the Cougars and good luck in the finals against either Boone or Notre Dame.

I understand your point but that's not the rule in high school basketball.

  4. Is anyone surprised that the Champion and Runner-up finishers in the All A Classic were both defeated in the first round of their district tournaments?

Not at all. When your playing teams with a student body 4 to 5 times the size of your school it's easy to see how these games can be tough. If you have 4 times the girls to choose from your normally going to be able to find a better talent pool. While A schools do have some great players it's usually the 3rd,,4th, and 5th players that the talent level drops simply because of the numbers of girls you have to choose talent from. I think that's were the difference comes in.

  5. They are balanced, good perimeter shooters and solid players at the post. They are difficult to press and score well in transition. To open up the game against Williamstown last night they did not shoot the ball particularly well and I thought that Williamstown's 1-3-1 defense did a good job of putting pressure on the perimeter and defending the post. Williamstown's problem was they could not handle SK's defense and then things just got out of control. I think WV should run a half court zone that puts pressure on the perimeter (1-3-1 or 3-2) and on the offensive end they need to get the ball in hargett's hands as much as possible. She will draw a lot of attention and passes well inside out and into Dixon on the block. WV must stay out of the corners where SK traps so well. It will take a nearly perfect game from WV, but I think they have the talent to do it.

I like your thoughts. What do you think about using the bigs Hargett and Dixon up front against the press to get the ball in and then luse the guards to make cuts and get up the middle, or if you get the ball into Hargett and then set some screens up front she can do some damage if she can get behind the first level of the press. I think your right about using a 1-3-1 but you have to play it right, pressure on the perimiter is a two edge sword with SK's ability to penetrate and get to the basket. I think you have to play it with emphasis on defending the post and stopping penetration. I realize that SK will knock down 3's but you have to give up something the best teams shoot in the high 30's. Just thoughts.

  6. Back to the topic. Congrats to the Lady Bearcats! Good win. The kids played very hard last night. It was great to see them get after it. Hargett and Heeger had solid games on both ends of the court. As a matter of fact, I thought the whole team played hard on defense. Great effort girls keep up the intensity. We will need all the defense we have to compete on Friday night against a stronge, physical SK.

I agree. The Lady Bearcats played hard on both ends of the court and locked down on defense when they needed to. I thought with 3 minutes left in the game and they went into a stall they were headed for trouble (when your the better team you shouldn't play not to loose but keep attacking the basket)but they were able to pull it out.:thumb:

  7. I will not argue that she is a loyal person. My grandmother is also a very loyal person, but in no way does that make her a great basketball coach. Not once in my post did I say that the JV coach was a bad person. All I'm saying is from what I've seen in the JV games is that her coaching abilities are very limited. As far as keeping to the varsity coaches game plan, I can see your point on that, since the varsity has been extremely successful this year.

Let's don't loose sight of the big picture. These young talented players will not do squat with out quality leadership at the JV and Varsity level.

Couldn't agree more that's been proven the last 2 years at Walton.

  8. The players never lose and the coach never wins what a horrible conundrum to be a part of this program where no one can do anything right. I have seen Walton play a couple of games and I do think they have good talent, it just can't always be the coach. I would like to see Walton step up and win their district. I think it would be a great thing, but some of you on here are a cancer to your program and just don't realize it. I know if you have kids involved it becomes more personal for you, but surely you have to realize that in the end your only hurting the players you care about with your constant complaining.

I here what your saying I really do. I just think that in basketball most coaches will expect players to be the best they can be and not make the same mistakes over and over. If they do they won't be playing especially at the Varsity Level. I don't thing it's wrong to expect the same from coaching. We are not talking about elementary grade basketball this is the varsity level. With that said your point is well taken.
