  1. JoeJoe, Scott was the 2nd best team that year but Holmes blew them out during the regular season. I'm not even sure if they made the regional, but Jett, Geraci, Mullins, Dees (spelling), and another 6'7" guy I think his name was Miller were pretty good that year. I agree though that Holmes was the clear favorite.

Dang, thats right man... Can't believe I forgot about them. We used to party with all them dudes from time to time. Jesse Jett lit up that all-star game at Thomas More that year. I remember Geraci could shoot the lights out.

Funny that my senior year in high school seems like it was yesterday, but yet I've forgot mad details. Must have been all the beer drinkin'.

I think the 6'7 dude was Brian Huff. He would have been 19 that year, but may have been held back. I played with him back in the woodland taylor mill league days. Dude would get mad rebounds and I would just cherry pick down the other end for a layup. Gotta love the 2-3 zone.

  2. Brandon Hatton. Should be an 8th grader, but either way he is very solid and will probably start varsity next year as an 8th grader. Hatton reminds me a lot of Mike Hester from few years ago.

Hatton's at Dixie now, but the question is for how long? Not saying it's true or not, but some think Dixie may just be a "pit stop" to get some varsity experience before moving to a different school. Very good possiblity he ends up wearing a different red and white uniform before it's all said and done....Hatton is originally from Covington...:sssh:

One can only hope. It would be nice to see him playing with McClendon. I've talked to Scotty Hatton about this a couple times a few years back and he was set on CovCath for his son then. Of course, this was before Henley took Holmes to the final 4 and the final. I can't speak for him, but I'd bet he is considering it.

  3. I totally agree the Holy Cross win over Holmes in 96 deserves mention as one of the biggest in recent NKY memory. :thumb:

Just to clarify the bolded though, Boone beating Lloyd in the finals wasn't an upset. The Rebels were 4-0 against Lloyd that season, including the 33rd district finals just a week before. Also, I think the kid you are talking about was junior guard T.J. Evans, and I'm not sure he was the MVP. Boone had a senior who's last name was Hall and he was clearly their best player.

Thanks, didn't know Boone owned Lloyd like that. I just remember that the team Holmes was most worried about all season was Lloyd because of Sheffield and Jefferson. Also didn't know about Hall either... Memories a little fuzzy over the years, I guess. Truthfully, anyone coming out of the 9th that season other than Holmes would have seemed like they came out of nowhere.

  4. Probably the biggest upset I remember! Not only was Holmes loaded but HC had lost Harney, Clark and several other seniors to graduation. The only returning players with any varsity experience were Goetz & Saalfeld. Best coaching job in one game I've ever witnessed.

I've always wondered if this was the "straw that broke the camel's back" for Mike Flynn. His teams were also upset in the regionals by HC in '89 & '91.

Great point there. Flynn packed his bags after that season and went to Ashland. Many in Covington were glad that he moved on. That loss was tough to stomach. Eifert completely out-coached Flynn that night in Hebron.

I've talked to Goetz a few times about that game. He said that Eifert had it drilled into their minds that they were going to win that game. You could just feel their confidence from the tip. It was genius to have Donny Goetz run the point that game. I'm still amazed that Eifert even thought to let his center be his main ball handler against Holmes. Truly a legendary coaching performance!

  5. I remember that, wasn't it a very low scoring game?

Yup, sure was. I believe 35-31 final...or something like that. Holmes only had 12 points at halftime and they were averaging around 70 a game that year. Some would say that Eifert played stall-ball...but I think that would somewhat diminish what a truly beautiful coaching job that was. Eifert was a very good baseball coach as well. I don't believe he ever got the recognition that he deserved. Great motivator, great tactician.

  6. The biggest one that I remember is directly related to the topic in this thread... It was a Holy Cross victory over Holmes in the '96 9th Region opening round. Holmes was undefeated against the 9th region (16-0 coming in, I believe) that season and had already claimed 3 blowout victories over Holy Cross that year. Holmes was the overwhelming favorite not only to win that game, but to win the 9th. However, Clay Eifert had something else in mind... He had his Indian squad convinced that they would beat Holmes. With a beautiful gameplan that put his center Donny Geotz at the point... HC was able to control tempo and virtually eliminate Holmes' press. Holmes top scorers Joe Rice, Jim Humphrey and Bernard were all held to single digits. In fact, the leading scorer for Holmes that game was Tim Sullivan (Cooper Head Coach) with 12 points. Tim was a distributor and defensive point guard, but he gave Holmes a chance to come back in the late minutes. However, it was not to be and there was a collective thud heard all across the Commonwealth. Holmes finished around 26-5 and would have been a legitimate contender down state.

In case you were wondering... Boone County went on to defeat Lloyd in the 9th Region Final. A sophomore guard named T.C or T.K....or something like that.....came out of nowhere to be the MVP of the tournament. This was another big uspet because Lloyd had Charles Sheffield and Jefferson that year. They were supposed to be Holmes biggest threat.

  7. Anyone who attended the State Championship can see why Kentucky basketball is so special. I would become very ill if the KHSAA went to a class system. I don't think we have anything to worry about though.

One problem I do have is coverage for the Sweet 16. I'm not sure about other parts of the state, but in Northern Kentucky there is not enough coverage. Why isn't there a TV contract? Indiana had one before they went to a class system. I don't think we are promoting the Sweet 16 like we should be.

  8. Exactly my thoughts. SC will have 3 starters next year who were all transfers.

Transfers really need to be looked into by KHSAA on a case by case basis. In some cases, these athletes should be required to sit out some time. I think those cases are rare overall, but they do happen. In Euton and Jackson's case, I'm not aware of all the details... I would hope that the KHSAA is though.

  9. If him shooting the 3 from the top of the key with no one within 5 or 6 feet of him is going to hurt the team and keep them from winning a ball game I think that says it all.

Now you are just taking what you want out of anything I say and twisting my words, so I am done debating you on the subject. Arrez had 21 points and 6 rebounds in the second half, locked up another top player in Kentucky and led his team to their second straight Final 4.

I think THAT says it all bro!

  10. I thought he could shoot from the outside? He has passed up several WIDE OPEN threes the last few days. If he refuses to take that shot, no way the kid can play D1 ball at his size.

Arrez isn't playing for a D1 scholarship right now, he is playing to win basketball games. I believe he is doing a pretty good job of that at the moment. Arrez can hit from the perimeter and has a solid stroke. However, I've said it before... And I will say it again... If you want Arrez Henderson on your team at the collegiate level, you want him because of his lock down defense. Anything else is gravy.

  11. No way Slone and Paintsville can shoot as well as they did against J-town vs. Bulldog Tech... And that is exactly what it will take for a Tigers W. Holmes by 15 in a somewhat back and forth contest thru 3 quarters. Holmes will pull away down the stretch due to multiple turnovers and fatigue late.

The guard with the messy hair for Paintsville might wanna get faded up in the morning... He'll need every bit of his vision to even think about dribbling out of the Holmes High Hoyas' full court pressure. After what I saw late in the J-town game, that particular guard could be good for up to 7 turnovers tomorrow.
