  1. Baseball does end in June but the football season is extending into more and more July time. With all the recent heat related issues, why not start Football later and cut into Basketball time.

Out of school sports, are just that....out of school. Many student-athletes don't get the time to choose summer teams, or other activities, because they feel compelled to participate in ever extending HS programs....Basketball camp here, Football passing league there. Basketball is almost 11 months a year anymore. Football players, condition often if they're not playing other sports.

#1 and #2, reek of Football coaches seeking their best interest and not that of the student-athlete and the choices he must make.

I hope it does pass because in the end football makes the most money for the schools, and if you have a good football program then you can make money for the school. Football is the best sport in my opinion and I enjoy basketball and baseball, but it just doesn't create as much excitement and money for the schools. I do agree however about the heat but there is no way around those factors, we are really taking away 2 adays because of the season moved back, teams don't go nearly as many 2 adays as they used to.

  2. I'm personally not for Item #1...1. Schools will now be able to do passing league tournaments and work with other schools from July 10 to July 31

As this will take away more Baseball time, for student-athletes who want to play both or must choose. Allowing out of season sports, to organize and run programs during the time frame, when student-athletes play summer baseball, will not help the already problem of limited time.

Baseball doesn't get time during Basketball and Football, but yet both have structured time during Baseball. Summer is for baseball and it would be no different, if KHSBCA wanted time in October or November for Baseball.

Many youth programs are already struggling with numbers, participation because they're players are choosing these other out-of-season sports. Traveling teams are becoming more predominant than summer youth leagues, because these kids want to play but dwindling numbers, won't allow for leagues...enough is enough.

Run your programs during your own season and leave Baseball alone.

I agree on some levels we all need to allow every athlete the chance to play whatever sport they want to play but football is the hardest sport to teach, play, and coach in my opinion. More time is needed to play football because baseball and basketball you can truly just show up and play. I know you need practice and it's very important, but football you can't just show up and play. It's a game that takes timing, execution, and players knowing players. This is totally my opinion of course but I believe football deserves more time than other sports because of the mentality it takes to win and achieve success. With that being said I disagree about baseball being a summer sport, football is a summer sport as well you are not going to be any good if you don't put the time in the weightroom, every sport benefits from bigger, faster, strong athletes.

  3. There is no sense of community around GC. The school is stuck out in no where. When it was created they decided to try to be fair and not put the school in any of the communities that had high schools and thus created a situation where there was no real community around it. McKell (South Shore) had such a strong program that it dominated. They didn't want to give up that domination and caused the rest of the district to resent them. I have heard a lot of bad stories about kids just not participating because they were either told they wouldn't get a chance due to where they lived or not getting a fair shake once they did play. I don't know if it is as overt as it once was but that is the perception still. Sammons and any future coaches will be dealing with that for a long time. GC had an excellent chance to overcome this when TJ Maynard was there but a small group of people killed that. He was getting better representation from the rest of the county when he left and that is one reason he is the winningest coach in their history.

Another problem is support in the form of administration taking care of things like cutting the field, cleaning up the trash, getting new bleachers and lights. It will be hard to ask an experienced coach to come in there under these circumstances. I don't know what they pay coaches but I do know at one time it was the same coaching salary as started when the schools merged. They didn't have an AD for awhile and that put a little more work on the coach. The new AD is a good man and needs time to move things forward. The empire that one of the former basketball coaches tried to keep also did its fair share of damage to an already damaged sport at GC.

Under Maynard, GC was beating Raceland most of the time and a couple of times beat Russell. They won district championships and played in the playoffs. I guess him being a Russell product while the rest of the staff being Russell, Wheelersburg, and a Greenup (not South Shore) coach was not what some were looking for. They ran off some good coaches. They ran an offense suited to the kids and a good, punishing defense and rarely shot themselves in the foot. That put them in position to win games though it wasn't as exciting as throwing 45 times a game I guess.

To fix - upgrade the facilities, make sure the feeder program is getting kids out from other parts of the county than where they come from now, make each home game an event that gets people out, pay your coaches, give support with the little things like cutting the grass and hauling the trash out after games, be patient as more kids enter the program, make it a concerted effort COUNTY WIDE to let kids know that they are needed and will be treated fairly. Long-term I would either split the system into 2 high schools or move the high school to Greenup to, among other things, create a sense of community.

That's my take as an outsider that knows a little about the inside. It won't be real easy or quick. The AD is a good man and wants to see kids succeed no matter where they are from. Step back and let him untie all the knots that are in GC's rope.

Don't forget about Coach Garry McPeek he won a district championship at Greenup, then TJ took over.

  4. Ashland deserves a top 7 ranking because of their schedule and the closeness of their losses to a couple of good teams (Russell and Montgomery County). The Daily Independent was just waiting for Paintsville to lose to make room for the Tomcats following their first win. If Boyd County had won, Lawrence may have climbed into the rankings instead.

Everybody knew that Paintsville had probably won its last season of the regular season before playing Prestonsburg, so the Tigers dropping out of the rankings should be no surprise.

I understand where you are coming from, but I disagree. Ashland is a rich tradition program and just because of their schedule they should be in the top 7. They are not very good this season I see them getting 4th after beating Bryan Station and playing Woodford again, I am sure they will look forward that one.

  5. Ashland at #5??? Their one win was against a winless team and had to come from behind and get it in overtime. All he paper does when they pull stuff like this is confirm what everyone (not from Ashland) already thinks about them. I guess East Carter's win over the #3 team counts less than Ashland's win over Boyd.

I agree thats a sad statement, Ashland is below average period.

  6. Russell is a good team not great I have seen them play, not as physical as they have been in recent years and secondary not as solid. They will have a chance to get to Papa Johns but in the end don't think they have enough to get there. Defense must improve, as everyone knows defense wins championships.

  7. I was talking to some people from Lawrence co. and they said Russell isn't as good as they were last year in their opinion. I wasn't at at the game but said average at best. Most people around think Russell will struggle with teams like Belfry and Breathitt Co. I see Russell losing to Mason County. Wish the Devils the best the rest of the way. Coach McGlone is a class act and a great coach.

  8. Mine would be

    1 Johnson Central

    2 Russell

    3 Ashland

    4 East Carter

    5 Raceland

6 Lawrence Co and Boyd Co tie[/quote

No love for Fairview, they beat East Carter and Ashland is winless. Ashland is the worst team I have seen around here in my opinion or Boyd. Russell is 4 TD's better than them but it's always close between those two schools. I don't totally disagree with you but you can't place 0 win teams in the top 7 that's crazy.

  9. I don't think anyone was making excuses. We went into the East Carter game knowing we had injuries, and we gave all the credit to East Carter, they deserved to win and did. We went into to the Fairview game knowing we had more injuries and came out with a win, and was glad to get it. We went into the LCA, with, still, more injuries, and expected a worse beating then we took, with many sophomores playing. Missing all three LB, 1 DB, 1 DL, both RB, 2 WR, and 1 OL. I though we did pretty well considering. But, no excuses LCA was the better team and won, they played very well and have a lot of talent. No excuses, just discussion, like is done in every other thread.

Congratulating East Carter on the win.

Your entitled to you prediction. Who knows, you might have hit it on the head.

Unless something happens this week, Raceland is not beaten up anymore. With all the players back, Raceland will be much different then last week. Greenup is much and improved, and I, for one, am glad to see it. 6-4 is OK, because we only have 4 district games, and that is what it is about - district and playoff game. And really only getting the playoffs matters, because almost everyone makes the playoffs, then it is a new season.

Like I said, you are entitled to your prediction for Greenup to win. But, I think Raceland will look a little different then they have since week 1. Most people have not seen Raceland full strength.

Will Raceland win? We will have to wait until Friday, about 10:00pm. But, if you want to judge Raceland on how they have played the last three weeks, you will be surprised. I think Greenup is going to come to play and it will be a great game. Last year was a great game, and I can't imagine this year being anything different. I hope Greenup does well in the rest of the season and makes a good showing in the playoffs. Good luck to Greenup Co.

Very well said and respected. Good luck to all teams this week.

  10. hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmNO

I disagree with you there I believe they miss those coaches a lot, it's about the Jimmy's and the Joe's but it's also about getting the best out of those kids and the coaches they lost are great coaches and people, it's hard to replace that in my opinion.
