  1. Ashland has played against a lot of very tough teams, inculding Russell, Woodford Co., Montgomery Co., Raceland and Pikeville.

If they had played East, West, or Fairview Maybe they could have earned some easy wins and respect.

Much smaller schools also you have to remember that.

  2. Russell's long standing hoem winning streak is snapped in this one.

I think that this loss may be better for the Devils than a win though, SK exposed soem things the Devils can correct, and also gave McGlone and Co. an accurate read of just where they are at right now, and what it will take to get the train heading to Papa John's....

There will be no train this year, Breathitt, Belfry and Mason are all better in my opinion.

  3. Bath County did.

I am sitting here shaking my head, Paris in pre-season ran Bath CO. off the field.

Bath is a solid team, but did you know that Fairview ran 80 offensive plays and had 455 yards of total offense with 6 turnovers. Last time I checked LCA defense is terrible even though LCA should win this game don't think they will stop Fairview.

  4. Morris has been in the press box a couple of times this year for health reasons. It's not affected his Coaching one bit. Russell has a young defense and a young secondary. They will come around and last time I checked the Devils were still unbeaten. I don't know that you can ask for more than that.

I hope he is okay didn't know that, he is a great person and coach. Everyone wants to talk about other teams and their schedule until tonight though Russell's schedule hasn't been that great and even with that said Simon Kenton isn't near as strong as other people in Northern KY.

  5. I think we are all in for a treat. I see a very good game from these two teams. I'm sure S K is concerned about the Wing-T just as Russell is concerned about pass defense. I hope all the Simon Kenton fans enjoy our stadium and facilities. Have a safe trip.

Russell is a fine team, but it's the worse Russell Defense I have seen in several years, I even noticed Coach Garry Morris up in the pressbox last game and he normally is on the field, I am guessing they are searching for answers. Hope Russell can extend that home winning streak, but when you play teams from Northern KY it's just different football up there.

  6. Russell will have to be on their toes this week.... Simon Kenton may only be 3-3 but they have played some good competition up in Northern Kentucky... I believe this will be a good measuring stick of just how good our Devils really are.... Russell needs to come out and jump on SK early to get the crowd into it and make it a difficult and very hostile enviroment to play in......

The team that will win this game is the team that makes the least mistakes and turnovers... Russell is a young team but always well coached and when it comes down to it late in the ball game Russell knows how to get it done... that is something that you can't teach!!!!

    Russell- 28

SK- 17....... LETS MAKE IT 35 IN A ROW AT HOME!!!!!!! DEFEND THE R... GO DEVILS!!!!!

    Wishful thinking!

  7. Whats the point here...I believe that is what I said...I believe both of those teams are ranked above all of the 4A District Teams in my poll...Of course you did your homework too I see...I am gonna have to mark off for posting Raceland Twice....C+...Just kidding...I think you were trying to state that Fairview was one of those teams better, but I disagree with that.

My apologies, you did an excellent job of posting information.

  8. Well lets see what you got as far as a top seven? Did you do your homework???

None of it matters really it's a waste of paper and ink. It's hard to compare teams and schools when it's different classes and schedules. I was just saying you can't say one team is decent when the other one was won more games and played a similar schedule. JC is obviously number 1 and Russell is number two, after that who knows. I was just speaking my opinion.

  9. This just proves the ole theory that people sometimes THINK you are crazy...but when your print your opinion in the paper then they KNOW you are crazy....no thinking needed.

    My assessment:

    1. Johnson Central - A notch better than any team in our area. They would hammer any team playing except Russell would be a decent game, but would still be a loss for Russell.

#2 - Russell -Russell once again is very good, but just how good. They barely sqeeked by Boyd County then barely squeeked by Ashland. Both Boyd and Ashland are struggling this year, so just how good is Russell? What would the score be if JC played Ashland and Boyd...Not sure, but I could tell you they wouldnt sqeek by them, it would be ugly and will be ugly for Ashland. So with that in mind JC should be #1.

    3. Raceland - Solid year, battling some injuries, definetly deserve the #3 spot.

    4. Ashland - Tough Schedule. Will be tough down the stretch if they can keep focused.

    5. Paintsville - 2 losses, but those came to JC and Sheldon Clark, has played a decent schedule, but as good as the other teams in the area.

    6. Fairview - Weak schedule in my opinion and didnt beat any of the decent teams on their schedule. Time will tell the truth for this team.

    7. Boyd Co/Lawrence/Rowan Co - Your guess is as good as mine on these teams. None are better then the other or worse then the other....Strange year.

East Carter, West Carter and Greenup Co all have the potential but cannot put together a solid season.

Lewis Co and Morgan are just Lewis Co and Morgan...Trying to compete at a decent level with lack of numbers and athletes. Unfortunate for those schools.

BTW, why isnt Sheldon Clark part of these Rankings...Doesnt The Ashland Daily Indepent cover Inez too or are they weeded out by the Big Sandy News...Which personally I would rather read the Big Sandy News, they are all about the youth and the WHOLE area. I can remember taking Boyd County JFL teams to play in that area and we had full page article on the youth football games, where Ashland Daily Independent would not even put a score in the paper if you begged them.

You got to be kidding me man, Ashland a decent team, teams can't help the schedule they play, they just play it (Fairview for example). Do your homework before you post also, Raceland hasn't played that decent of schedule either, Paintsville has played a horrible schedule till now. All I say is do your homework before you post things about other teams. Raceland, Paintsville, and Raceland could easily win and compete in that 4A district with Greenup, Boyd, Rowan, and Lawrence. That isn't supposed to happen either when those schools have 700 more students.:fire:

  10. The losses Raceland have were w/o their starting running backs and linebackers, I understand LCA is a very good team but, they will probably meet again, If you saw the Fairview game then you know even w/o our players the game was not as close as the score indicates, an if my memory is correct this season is moving along just like last year an I'm sure you remember what happened in Lexington then

Two completly different teams, can't compare years you should know that being a football guy like yourself, geez man watch the game no team around here is great other than Russell. All teams can beat each other around here including your Rams getting beat by East Carter, just like turnovers are part of the game, injuries are too. I am done talking about this topic, support the team you want to support. I am entitled to my opinion just like yourself. Good luck to the Rams against Paintsville this week.:fire:

  11. yahoo83 you are obviously not a fan of Raceland to call them average. When this team has the starting offense and defense on the field they are definetly more than average

I am fan of football in general and in no way shape or form is Raceland that great, they have some nice players and have a great coaching staff but they are not great. They are in the middle of the pack with the rest of the district, doesn't matter because LCA is rolling over all the teams in the district anyhow.

  12. Uh.....I believe that is what I had said (thanks for agreeing with me :D) without the mention of the other stuff. LCA is the top team in our district bc of their play on the field ;)and I am not into making excuses like money and facilities and things that we can't contol.

As for turnovers a factor in that other game - that is no breaking news scoop, imo turnovers come into play in every game and are one factor in determining an outcome.[/QUOT

Very true Raceland is average like most teams in the area, LCA is the best and will continue to be.

  13. I know it is difficult to compare scores, especially in high school. I just looked at East scores against Fairview and Raceland. I think West can play with Fairview. Any chance they can beat Raceland?

Both Fairview and Raceland have good skill and great defenses, and it's hard to compare scores especially when you are comparing rivalry games, but the Comets are doing a great job will be interesting.

  14. I had a feeling that this one would be tougher than most thought. Paris I believe has had some kids leave and has new coach this season. That always takes some adjustments. Imo Paris will get better each week.

LCA is a clear cut favorite in this district but jmo is that after LCA the district is more competitve. I would say that Raceland is next in line behind LCA but anyone is capable of beating the other. Every team has to "bring it" each time out.

Next week tha Rams step out of district play and take on Class A Paintsville in Paintsville. I am sure that coach "Hoof" wil be grading film tonight and concentrating on the Tigers starting tommorrow.

Of course LCA is the best they have the best facilities, most money, and best athletes they should be the best. As for Raceland being 2nd I am sure that's how it will fall with fairview 3rd and nicholas 4th. It will set up a great first round matchup, I was at the first Fairview/Raceland game and it was a great ballgame, even though a lot of turnovers decided that game.

  15. This district is truly becoming a trainwreck.... 4 teams withlosing records who are all about equal battling for the district title, it will be interesting to say the least.

That's because all the teams in this district are horrible. Whoever gets out of the 2nd round will get killed in the 3rd game of the playoffs.

  16. WRONG. With all due respect you are dead wrong on this one. What do you think college baseball coaches are doing during the High School baseball season? They're coaching their own teams because that is their college season as well. Collegiate baseball coaching staffs are no where near the size of collegiate football or basketball staffs. If there are two people they're doing pretty well, a third is almost unheard of.

While I don't propose to have the definitive answer here, I will say that no situation involving young athletes can be an all or nothing proposition. I have had great success working with other coaches in other sports and even from other schools to help student athletes play multiple sports, and with a high degree of skill to boot!! It is the mentality that some on here show, that (insert whatever sport you love) is THE MOST important and all others are secondary, that creates the problems for the students. Football does NOT require year-round workouts anymore than basketball or baseball. And, how in the world can someone earlier say you can just walk in and play basketball and baseball without preparation? Mutiple sports create multiple opportunities for students AND teaches them the things they are SUPPOSED to be getting from participation: competitiveness, sportsmanship, winning and losing with class and dignity, handling pressure.

Sir, Basketball and Baseball can be played without practicing much easier than Football, that's what I said and it's the truth. You see a lot of kids playing those sports on their own because you don't have to practice it as much. I agree practice is important for those sports don't get me wrong but as far as preparation and practice there is no comparing the three sports. I believe many people will agree with that. You are entitled to your own opinion but come on you can't just show up and play football like you could basketball and baseball. :creepy:

  17. Faulty logic, so it's okay for football to take up the summer, just not baseball.[/QUOT

Whatever sport it is it doesn't matter because we all have opinions. Bottom line to me is if the kid is good enough people will notice no matter what time of year it is and no matter what sport it is. It's the coaches job to sell his players as well if the coach thinks the player is good enough for college. BASEBALL, BASKETBALL, FOOTBALL, ETC. Summer isn't for any sport in particular but if we were to ask most people they would say football because it's the next sport up and if you want to win you must put the time in. I agree HS spring football is kind of pointless especially for smaller schools because all the athletes play other sports. We could go on forever about this topic and never reach a solution, bottom line is it's all about the kids and doing whats right for them not coaches.

  18. Yeah, I agree, those baseball scholarships you receive from summer exposure are truly overrated, who wants their education paid for anyway?:creepy:

That's not what I meant spindoc, thats great if they get their education paid for, too many kids quit other sports because they want to focus on one and they end up not doing as well in that one sport, whereas if they played other sports maybe they could have gotten their education paid for that way. I guess I didn't explain myself enough.

  19. You guys should ban Fall Baseball leagues then. Ask around No other sport keeps kids off the football field more than Baseball. KHSAA Baseball is in the spring so it should not conflict. with School sports, I think Youth leagues should be over when kids get to High School IMO.

I agree with that, too many kids think they will make it in baseball and it just doesn't happen. Sure they may get drafted in the 100th round or whatever they have, but big deal congrads you have a chance to make a minor league team and travel on a bus for 200 days a year, that's no life. No matter what sport the kids choose to play they should play what they want and not have to choose.

  20. Noting the geography and history, there probably should have been an East Greenup Co High and a West Greenup Co high school, but that is water under the collective bridge. I'm sure it was all about the budget when the school merger was conceived. Now, the best example of why the lack of football success is not a problem with South Shore vs Wurtland is summed up by one name... Candy Berry. Candy Berry has accomplished more with the cheerleading program at GCHS than any other similar program in the state. She has multiple National championships, and a national reputation for being a top cheerleading program year in and year out. What's the difference you ask? Candy Berry leads that program like Vince Lombardi lead the Packers. No one has ever wondered who was in charge or what dedication it takes to be a member of that squad. There are no exceptions. If you cross the line or break a rule you're out. Period. End of discussion. The problem with this football team is a total lack of leadership from the top down. Get a decent coaching staff in there and see what happens. A strong coach can handle any parent situation. He simply states that it's his way or the highway. Your Jimmy or Joe is not important, the team is important. Get with the program, obey the team rules or get out. I would suggest that the AD go find himself another Candy Berry to lead the football program. Good Luck!

I agree with you totally even though you can't compare cheerleading to football, you can win at Greenup County it's just going to take someone who can committ many many hours in everyday to achieve success. The kids are in the school you just have to get them out.

  21. Correct me if I'm wrong , but doesn't baseball start in Feb and run through June.

Summer league, youth league, AAU leagues, whatever league in basketball and baseball is what started this.

I agree Fall baseball is just way too much for kids for example, and some kids play that because they are told that's what they need to do in order to play varsity next spring. I know a kid that quit football because he was told that for baseball and he was the backup catcher for 3 years, he never saw the baseball field and would have been a good football player. Those things happen in football and basketball also I know, but still all these other leagues kill the kids because they are FORCED to make decisions they shouldn't have to make.
