Apollo punches their ticket to the sweet sixteen the hard way. 3rd region finals.

Apollo got a tip in from Michael Berry at the buzzer to beat Muhlenberg County 64-62 in the 3rd Region title game Monday night. The Eagles advance to next week's Sweet 16 at Rupp Arena in Lexington. They'll face the either Mason County or George Rogers Clark Wednesday, March 14th

It was truly a Cinderella run by Apollo to win the region. They weren't even mentioned among the contenders and they knock off arguably the two best in the region back to back.

Congrats to Coach Sargent and his team!

Apollo lead 30-22 at haftime. Then it appeared they were going to just run away with it, as they built their lead to 46-33 at the end of 3. But Muhlenberg cut it to 46-38 in the first minute of the fourth quarter. With just 50 seconds left Apollo lead 58 to 52. With just 20 seconds left Apollo had the ball and was leading 62 to 59. I would have never given Apollo a chance to win the first game of the regional; much less win it all. I predict that whoever they do play at Rupp will beat them by 20+. But congrats to them for winning the 3rd Region.
