Cards clip Eagles to reach tournament finals

 

Clark (8-2) held on despite missing five of six free throws in the final 38 seconds and didn’t panic down the stretch to notch the win.

 

“It wasn’t a beauty contest, it was just a struggle all night long for us,” Clark coach Scott Humphrey said. “We couldn’t get anything going in transition, it was just painful for us on the offensive end.”

 

The Eagles held a 33-30 advantage going into the fourth quarter. The lead changed seven times and featured two ties before Clark senior Adam Fatkin connected on an old-fashioned three-point play underneath, giving Clark a 43-40 advantage with 1:09 remaining. Christian missed four shots in the final minute, while Clark didn’t convert at the free-throw line until Bopper Stenzel made the first of two charity tosses with seven seconds remaining.

 

Christian built an 18-10 lead early in the second half, but the Cardinals used a 9-0 run and a 3-pointer by Taylor Howard at the buzzer for a 26-25 advantage at the break.

 

Fatkin paced the Cards with 17 points, followed by Stenzel with 12. Stenzel completed a double-double with 10 rebounds and dished out six assists.
