Blair (SO) and Henderson (OC) put on quite a shooting display. Blair, for the most part, showed little in the way of ill effects from his ankle injury suffered in the Henry County Inv.

 

Sorry I didn't post after the game...it was truly a very exciting game in front of a huge - and very vocal - crowd.

 

Jack Sherry for South hit a three to start the game, and South had a 10-8 lead late in the first. But Oldham scored the final 7 points of the period to lead 15-10 after one, and the first six points of the second period. The combined 13-0 run gave Oldham a 21-10 lead and South could never recover.

 

The Dragons rallied to within 8 several times - and may have even gotten it to within six once - but never got closer. Oldham outscored the Dragons in every period except the third, when South mounted a ferocious rally but could only trim the lead by one, outscoring Oldham, 18-17.

 

Oldham could have blown the game wide open in the fourth, but despite shooting free throws exceedingly well in the first three periods, they shot blanks at the line in the fourth (9 of 17) and South hung close, trailing by 11 with two minutes to play, before Oldham salted away the win.

 

The game was won on the glass, where Oldham completely dominated. Pegasus Sports' unofficial numbers had Oldham winning the rebounding war by 14. The Colonels negated South's usual advantage on the perimeter, hitting the same number of threes as South (8) and actually shooting better from beyond the arc (8 of 18 for 44.4% compared to South's 8 of 21 for 38%). Oldham shot nearly 40% from the floor while South hit just 18 of 56 for 32%, far off their usual percentage.

 

Free throws weren't a major issue; neither team finished with a great percentage; South hit 16 of 25 for 64% and Oldham hit 21 of 35 for 60%. Oldham wound up with more free throws as South had to foul in the final two minutes to try to get back into the game...

 

Oldham had (unofficially) 8 turnovers to 13 for South... most importantly, Oldham had just four turnovers in the first three quarters.

 

Defensively, Oldham had the better game. They hounded Carson Fields, one of the region's best all-around players, into a nightmare of a game. Fields finished 4 of 14 from the field. Every time Fields turned around, there was either someone big enough and/or quick enough to cause him problems confronting him.

 

Eric Blair had a really impressive night for South, hitting 5 of 9 shots - all threes. One shot was from about 22-23' straight away...

 

Henderson was a thorn in South's side all night. Oldham, for the most part, passed the ball really well, and they repeatedly found Henderson open for threes. Henderson hit 8 of 16 shots, including four threes, and all four of his free throws. He was particularly valuable in the third, when Oldham momentarily lost its shooting eye, and South seemed poised to cut the lead down. Instead, Oldham's lead was largely preserved as Henderson hit all three of his third quarter shots (two threes and a deuce), while the rest of the Colonels went 1 for 8.

 

When Oldham's size wasn't hurting South on the glass (UNOFFICIAL LEADERS: Wesley 10 rebounds, Payne 10 rebounds, Denise 6 rebounds, Smith 6 rebounds), the Colonels hurt South with quickness. When the Dragons came out on Henderson, Simpson, Flores, and Smith, Payne took the ball to the glass for easy layups. He was particularly effective in the final period, scoring 10 of his 18 points in the final frame.

 

The win puts Oldham County in position to claim the District 29 number one seed if they can beat North Oldham this Friday in Goshen.

 

Oldham played without Dylan Simms, the Colonels' rugged frontline player who is out with a foot injury suffered during football season.

 

This was a very fun and exciting game. Oldham was clearly the better team on this night, but South has a tremendous bunch of talented athletes, and is well-coached. Both will be in the hunt for the region before all is said and done.

This was one of the best high school regular season games that I have seen in many years. The atmosphere was more like that of a regional championship. It was standing room only. Great up tempo game. Fun to watch. Even with the 10 point plus lead thru a lot of the game, you never thought South was out of it. Great game.

That run at the end of the first / beginning of the second was the deciding factor; South could never quite recover and get close. But you're right - until the end (when Oldham extended the lead at the line), South was never really out of it. As I mentioned in my recap, above, it was an 11 point game with 2 minutes to play... bringthewood is right; this was one of the most exciting HS games I've seen in some time as well, and the crowded atmosphere was electric.

Litratings are usually pretty decent by February. Still too early for the mathematical formulas to start to have any credence. Ditto for Cantrell, etc.
