Princeton (OH) 66 Boone County 47

The #1 team in Cincinnati beat the Rebels, ranked #2 in Northern Kentucky. Boone was led by Sydney Moss's 26 points and 13 rebounds. Freshman Kelsey Mitchell scored 26 points for the Vikings.

You have got to hand it to Nell, this team will be battle tested. Nothing wrong with losing to a great team.

I agree they will be ready to face any team by tournament time. Better to Sweat in training than Bleed in the War!!!

Boone actually played Princeton tough for two quarters with a 29-29 tie halftime score. The third quarter was a disaster as the Rebels turned the ball over repeatedly. What was a bit disappointing about that for me was that it wasn't the full court pressure that did it so much as just bad decisions in the half court. A number of those turnovers were communication errors between new players and returners. But that will get better as this team continues to play. Of course Princeton is the type of team that smells blood and goes into a gear they don't have until that string of errors comes along and opposing teams have even more trouble with all that quickness. It just isn't seen very often in HS girls BB.

One thing for sure, Boone won't see anything again this season to match the quickness and athleticism of Princeton! They were, last night, at least in the third period, the best team I've seen BC go against in the past couple season. I had heard a lot about 9th grader Mitchell and she was as good as advertised. Quick as a cat and utilized a great crossover move that was often, IMO, a carry but not called. Maybe it was so quick the officials couldn't see it. And then again, with the leniency today on that aspect of the game maybe it is just the "old-timer" in me! The thing she has added to the Vikings that they didn't have last season is outside shooting. You have to give her space or she is by you in a flash. So, back off and she pops the three. She hit 4 of 6 last night including three in the decisive third quarter. Shakeira Lang also hit 4 of 10 threes and I believe 2 of those were in the third period also.

Both these ladies were left handed so the three top scorers in the game were lefties with Moss being the other! Moss had good numbers but I think she is still rounding into shape after some time off because of her knee and wisdom teeth extractions.

I think Princeton could be beaten by a fundamentally sound team that can make them play more of a half court game, which Boone did for the first half. But that may be a tall order for the vast majority of teams they will see this year! Tremendous quickness and athletic as can be.

It's good to see schools such as Boone, Ryle, NDA, and Highlands seek tough early season matchups. It will bode well for all of these teams in March.

Shock...Boone and NDA have always had brutal schedules and been okay with early season hits because it makes them tournament tough. It's great to finally see some of the others following suit.

Nell knows this set of guards will need to take a few lumps in order to handle the big stage later. Trust me, been there done that. Also, Nicole knows NDA needs to take some lumps so they don't get that feeling "we're already where we need to be".

I agree. Too many NKY teams shy away from the GOOD Louisville, Lexington, and Cincinnati schools, rack up impressive looking records, and then can't compete in March. Records are meaningless, improving is the important thing, and you can't do that playing weaker teams all year long.

Ryle started playing the type of schedule they needed to play to continue to improve last year and have followed suit again this year. I confess, before Jenna started playing varsity ball in the 8th grade I didn't pay attention to the girls high school game. I was a Senior in High School when they brought back girls basketball and I was fortunate enough to not only watch, but was freinds with one of the best girls ever in Donna Murphy. There have been a few times I have seen other great players, Jackie Bearden, Rhonda Klette, Jamie Walz play but for me to watch a girls game was rare. Today, I wouldn't miss it! As for basketball, I am an admitted lifelong junkie:) In any genre of the game, you only improve when you play up. (Teams considered better than you). Nothing wrong with taking your lumps as long as there are lessons to be learned. Flashy records impress me only when you have beaten the elite along the way:)

Here's to another great year of girls basketball in NKY.
