Wait a minute...is that exactly what conservatives do as well? People (no one specifically) are so blind to their own failings. Look at it objectively, please. BOTH sides try to impose their philosophy on a group that doesn't agree.

One group however LITERALLY tries to control peoples lives or play a bigger role in it.

Would that be the group that tells gay people that they aren't good enough to fight for their country? Or that they shouldn't be allowed to marry a person of their choosing? That group? Conservative government: just small enough to fit into your bedroom.

You're rather vague and out of context with your description there, Getslow. They never said gays weren't good enough to fight for their country and they said marriage is a religious union between a man and a woman.

First, I am a supporter for gay rights and I believe they should be allowed to spend their life with whoever they want. Sadly they're some people in the party that do not favor these issues.

Secondly, I was referring to the group that is forcing you to buy health insurance or you get fined. The group that tells you how you should raise your kids. The group that tells you when you should teach your kids about sex. The group that tells you that they know best when it comes to your money than you do. The group that constantly taxes the successful for...well being successful.

There is a reason that the right wing have the stereotype that they want less government intrusion.....there is a reason that the left have the stereotype of the polar opposite.

And I respectfully disagree with you. While that perception may yet exist, I've yet to encounter a government that didn't want more control over its citizens.

It's not liberals telling me that I can't buy a bottle of whiskey on Sunday or gamble on football games. Those are things I'd like to do that conservatives consider harmful. I have thus been prevented from doing them. Both this post and the one above are simply meant to show that both sides of the aisle are complicit in reducing my individual freedoms in one way or another.

On the bold.....I haven't heard this argument since Footloose.

So far your examples have been about morality. Mine have been about money which is what IMO people in this current economy care most about because it directly affects them and our economy is the biggest issue. To me and looking at past records, the left simply want to do more with your money and not in productive way. That is all I was conveying when saying that one side tries to play a bigger role in our lives.

Which side do you think tries and tax and spend more?

If we're going to break it down to something that simple, then of course the answer is obvious: Liberals. But is it any wonder they don't trust the market to work things out? When has it ever? And what sort of freedom is it when all you've got is the freedom to suffer, to starve and to be marginalized? At the same time, what evidence to liberals have that big government can help things? Those bastions of leftist thinking, American universities, seem to be the only places left on Earth not called Cuba and North Korea that actually believe communism can still work. How can big government possibly hope to protect the little guy when what it does is strip a person of his individuality in the name of the larger society? Besides, societies without incentives are subject to horrific systemic mediocrity and stagnation.

In the end, we're all working on speculation because there have been ZERO successful governments in the history of the world. They all fall. All we have to go on are the ones we have right now. Some last for a thousand years, some for a decade or so, but in the end, we're just guessing so we can make things as nice as possible for the time we get as a society. I see merits and drawbacks to both the liberal and conservative arguments. Big governments tend toward the tyrannical and small governments tend to ignore the suffering at the margins of society. I find it difficult to get worked up about conservatives vs. liberals simply because I don't think either side really has much of a shot at getting it right.

I would rather be free than to live under any tyrannical rule.

There will always be a certain group of people that suffer. It is life. Humans will never be able to stop it. You find the best system that works for most people.. No form of government is ever going to be able and help 100% of its people. NONE. Just like no matter what doctors do, at times they can not treat cancer. Sometimes schools will not be able to educate certain kids. At times no matter the right choices a parent did to raise their child there will be a kid that goes down the wrong path. Same thing goes with the type of government.

"what sort of freedom is it when all you've got is the freedom to suffer, to starve and to be marginalized?"
Please. Americans that suffer do not even come close to the people that suffer in other 3rd world countries so do not act like freedom is not worth it. We have never experienced what others around the world have in terms of suffering.

It hasn't. That's why we are the worlds largest economy.

And do you believe that without the vast social programs that conservatives have so much disdain for that we would have the standard of living that even our poorest citizens enjoy?

Can you rephrase that? I am not understanding what you mean.
