cards1b21 Posted April 5, 2010 Posted April 5, 2010 So as of 4/5. who do you think should be in the discussion as a real contender for the 13th region title? South Laurel (1-4)- terrible start but have had several key injuries that have really hampered them. I expect them to turn things around dramatically when they return from their road trip. North Laurel (3-3)- Of their 3 wins, their best is a win against a pretty underachieving Corbin squad. However, they have played each of their losses close, including a 5-7 loss to PLD. Clay County (5-1)- I do feel that this record is a bit decieving as they really haven't played anyone. They lost to Corbin, and two of their wins are over Leslie County, whom Harlan County also beat. Middlesboro (3-4)- They started the season off well by beating Corbin 15-6 but looks to have hit a skid while in FL. Not knowing anything at all about those teams, I would imagine they were good teams. Corbin (4-4)- Good wins over Rockcastle and Clay but beaten by 13th region foes Middlesboro, NL, and KC. While there may be a few other teams that could be spoilers, I don't think anyone else outside of this list could win it. Agree or disagree?
Deuce41 Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 I think that the as a whole the 13th region could come down to who is playing well at the end of the season. However younger teams need to gain confidence and pitching is questionable at best for some of the "contenders." At this point to name favortites is absolutely shooting in the dark.

While I agree with your argument about the winner coming down to who is playing well at the end, I strongly disagree that it is impossible to determine this early in the season, which teams have the capacity to be playing championship baseball at the end of the season. In my original post, I left out the teams that have don't even have the capacity to compete with the top tier teams. I'm sorry if your team was not on the list but unfortunately, if they weren't, I don't feel like they have a chance at all.
Deuce41 Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 I don't have a problem with the list, I think it is just as easy to say who has the best coaches and work from there. Take it easy and relax, you have your opinion and I have mine, its all just speculation at point in any event. I would rather sit back watch some games and then make an informed decision. The more important question is this: Who has the best concession stand? and Why?

As far as coaches go, top 3 in no particular order: Wynn Harris Rob Ledington Bill Powell
Deuce41 Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 Got to be SL, Whitley, or Corbin. As far as coaches go, top 3 in no particular order: Wynn Harris Rob Ledington Bill Powell Hot Dogs at Corbin.... Hamburgers at South Laurel.... Chili Pie or Bar-B-Q at Whitley..... As far as the coaches go I think I would add John Smith to the list, although the cupboard is awfully bare at Bell this year.
cards1b21 Posted April 15, 2010 Author Posted April 15, 2010 Is it time to take SL off the contender list? I'm a former player of SL, I will admit, but dang, this year has been frustrating after such a good season last year. As mentioned in another thread, I know think that Clay, Middlesboro, Whitley, and NL are the clear contenders. Knox Central, HC, Corbin, and SL are definitely spoilers though. They would not be a good first round game for anyone.
MountainThunder Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 I think with less than 1/2 the season played, it is still too early to take SL off the possible contenders list. If they don't show marked improvement down the stretch, I could see it, but not just yet.
LMU20 Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 You can have all the talent in the world along with great coaching just look at our Wildcats this past year, but it usally comes down to the players who just want it a little more. I think this years 13th region will be just that, who wants it more.
cards1b21 Posted April 15, 2010 Author Posted April 15, 2010 Actually, this basketball season showed that consistency is absolutely necessary to win a title. Sure you may win in the first round or even second, but if you're an inconsistent team, you could very easily lose the third, even if you do have more talent. So, I think it boils down to who is most consistent during the second half of the season.
MountainThunder Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 I think it is who gets hot and is healthy at the right time. I agree that if you are playing pretty well late in the season, you have the confidence to believe you have a shot. I think the 13th is wide open this year and should be really exciting down the stretch.
LMU20 Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 Let me ask you this question then, what always do you find on a championship team? You find a player who is not flashy, he just makes every kid around him perform higher than ever expected. Think about that for a second.

You also, coincidentally, find a stud pitcher, great catcher, and good coaches. You can only get so lucky.
Deuce41 Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 I would have serious doubts about South Laurel right now but that all could change, Like I said earlier, sit back watch some games and get a feel for the teams, but I think you do have to add Whitley to the list, they can score alot of runs.
