Knoebal went through the first 6 giving up two runs and Peddicord closed it out giving up one run in the seventh.

Struggled. All of the runs came from the 2, 3, and 4 hitters of the Cru. the 2 hitter had two rbi's as well as the 3 and 4 hitter

How did Zerhusen and Conelly do for the Cru? Also how did Gray, Rebholze, Teegarden and Kremer do for CC?

 

Gray plays for NCC, Rebholz pinch hit in the 7th, base hit off SS glove, Teegarden had a deeeep double to center, he was DH, Kremer had a couple of hits, at least he reached base a couple of times.

St. Henry played well, coupled with I believe four errors on the Camels. Not a good night for the Boys from the County.

Crusaders get off to better start this season

The Crusaders are well on their way after getting six strong innings from senior right-hander Nick Knoebel and scoring four runs in bottom of the fifth inning to break a 2-2 tie in a 6-3 win over Campbell County on Tuesday.

 

The victory not only spoiled the debut of new Campbell County coach Scott Schweitzer, but already has St. Henry halfway to the win total it posted through the first 21 games last season, when it started 2-19.

 

"We're not going to go 0-18 before we win another one," said St. Henry coach Walt Terrell. "I think it's very important to get this win right off the bat, because we just weren't very good last year. They kind of needed to see we aren't going to go through what we went through last year."

 

The Crusaders did end last season by going 5-2 and finishing as 34th District runner-up, which qualified them for the Ninth Region Tournament, but they were bounced out in the first round by Covington Catholic. Knoebel said the fast finish made this team believe it could be much improved over last season, especially with a chunk of players returning.

 

"It just proved to us that we had what we needed to have to win games," Knoebel said. "We had so much potential last year to be good, but it seemed like we didn't have the focus and the drive. I think we're going to be all right this year."

 

They certainly will be if the lineup stays as consistent top to bottom as it was on Tuesday. Last season St. Henry averaged just 3.2 runs per game and was held to two runs or less 17 times.

 

It was the bottom of the lineup that started Tuesday's winning rally and the top to the middle that added to it. Junior Brennan Kling came off the bench as a pinch-hitter and promptly belted a double into right-center off Campbell County starter, and loser, Jonathan Rust. Senior first baseman Alex Thorburn, the No. 9 batter, laid down a perfect bunt single up the third base line to put runners at first and third. Left-handed hitting leadoff batter Jeremy Conley followed with a drag bunt up the first base line that Rust fielded and by the time he glanced at Kling to freeze him at third, Conley had beaten it out to load the bases.

 

Freshman Dylan Bevant walked to force in one run to chase Rust. Senior shortstop Travis Miller, who went 3-for-3, then lined a single off an 0-2 pitch from reliever David Jenkins that was just past Campbell County shortstop Justin Iles to drive in two runs and sophomore third baseman Kevin Peddicord followed with a sacrifice fly, his second of the game, to make it 6-2.

 

Miller's hit was the third one he had on an 0-2 pitch in the game.

 

"Being down 0-2 doesn't worry me, I just look to put the ball in play," said Miller. "I was just trying to drive in a run somehow, even if it was a sacrifice fly, but he threw me a fastball right down the middle and I got a good swing on it.

 

"It was really big for the bottom of the lineup to get things going and then it's up to us at the top to drive them in. I really think our offense will be better if we just focus on little things."

 

Terrell said he plans to play more "small ball" this season.

 

"We've done that in the past and everybody says we don't, but we haven't been very good at it to be flat out honest," he said. "It was tremendous. We're going to have to do more of that and if we don't we're going to be in trouble, but we have some younger kids who aren't afraid to swing the bats and last year that was a problem for us - guys just couldn't pull the trigger."

 

Terrell said of Knoebel: "That's what he did for us last year, threw strikes and got people out."

 

Peddicord pitched the seventh and allowed one run.
