8th Region Scoring

Featured Replies

So far this year the final scores seem to show a tendency that the winning teams are putting more points on the scoreboard - especially the bigger schools in the 8th region. Not surprisingly, the losing teams' scoring output are also apparently higher than they have been the last few years.

I'm just wondering why? Why does this trend seem to be occuring? Poorer defense? Better offensive efficiency? Better shooters? More pressing defenses? More wide-open offensive philosphies by region coaches?

Any observations and opinions out there?

A great many of the coaches in the 8th region indicated to me that this year they intended to open up their offenses more. Of course, the quicker you shoot, the more possessions for the other guy, meaning both teams often score more.

Comparing the average points per game of the top 5 scoring 8th Region girls teams from the end of last year vs. the end of December this season:

2/26/09

Simon Kenton 60.9

Anderson County 55.0

Gallatin County 50.4

South Oldham 50.0

Shelby County 48.8

12/31/2009

Oldham Co. 62.5

North Oldham 58.0

Simon Kenton 55.1

Anderson Co. 55.1

South Oldham 54.2

All five of the top five teams are scoring at a clip higher than last year's top 5.

Oldham County's average of 62.5 is the highest - if they maintain it season-long - since Scott County averaged 79.1 ppg in the 2004-5 season.
