Oldham County 42 South Oldham 7

Featured Replies

All Oldham County as the Colonels extend their lead in the overall series to 15-7. Oldham has won the last three meetings between the two teams, including 56-0 last year and 42-7 this year.

Pretty much all over after one period. Oldham County scored on all three first quarter possessions. The first was a killer...facing 4th and 20 from the South Oldham 21, Oldham QB Chase Hamby hit a wide-open Kylie Obradovich for a 21 yard TD with 8:19 to play in the 1Q.

Brett Leary followed with a 20 yard TD run (5:29 left in 1Q) and a 54 yard run (2:17 to play in the first). 21-0 after one period.

A 9 yard run by Tyler Oldham made it 28-0 with 1:29 to play in the half, then Blake Shackleford intercepted a Christian Wallace pass and raced 31 yard with 20 seconds left to stake OCHS to a 35-0 halftime lead.

Wallace was running for his life all night. To his credit, he made some things happen with his feet and was able to avoid a lot of "sure" sacks...

For the game, Oldham scored on 5 of their first 6 possessions.

From there, the Colonels were in cruise control, but they got one more score on a 30 yard pass from Hamby to Antonio Brown-Campbell. South scored late in the 3Q on a 12 yard pass from Wallace to Cody Kollenberg, who made a leaping grab against double coverage.

Oldham limited South to less than 100 yards of total offense. South only penetrated the Oldham County side of the field once.

Eleven different Colonels carried the ball, led by Leary's 145 yards and two scores on 10 carries. Kirk Yepko had 47 yards on 5 carries... Hamby only threw three passes - all in the first half - completing two for 37 yards and a score.

Oldham County ran the ball for 272 yards.

Wow, South is really struggling to find their way right now. I really don't know much about their program, but I can't imagine they are as bad as this score indicates. How does their schedule play out and can they get another win? Just asking an honest question and don't mean any slight.

Right now, Oldham is significantly better than South... Litkenhous has the Colonels ranked #8 in 5A...might be about right.

South should keep their heads up. The rest of their schedule has a couple of games that they can compete in - Grant County next week in Crestwood, and against Owen County to end the size. Sandwiched in between is a real mountain in the form of Anderson County.

So - realistically - the Dragons can reasonably go 3-7, which would be an uptick from last year's 0-10 mark, and keep them moving in the right direction towards a possible breakout next year, when all their juniors and sophomores become seniors & juniors... A win over Grant would probably put them in the playoffs as the #4 seed. Probably a tough matchup on the road vs. John Hardin, but again, an improvement over last year, when the Dragons missed the playoffs.

Oldham County - 3-3, with three losses to highly-regarded 6A teams - has a tough Jtown team next week. They also have games against Grant County, 5A top 10 Anderson County, and 6A top 10 Shelby County. The only game they'll be a decided favorite in will be the Grant County game, so the Colonels will have to play one game at a time and focus! This team has the talent and coaching to repeat as district champs, but the path will be tough...

Grant beat Bourbon? I thought this was a gimme for SO.

Bourbon is no power! Probably similiar to Grant this year.

So, SO needs this game to get into the playoffs. Can they beat Grant? Will making the first round of the playoffs make their season? What is realistic?

Not Hating, just Asking.

From what I've read, Bourbon beat themselves against Grant. Three turnovers inside the Braves' 10 yard line(!), mishandled kicks(!), ad nauseum.

The Grant County game is a winnable game for South Oldham, but they'll have to tackle the runners better than they did last week.

I would say making the playoffs and winning 2-3 games would be a great improvement from last season 0-10. With Grant and Owen left on their schedule, they could potentially finish with 3 wins and playoff berth. I would say that is moving in the right direction after going 0-10.

I totally agree. A 2-3 game improvement in the won-loss record, and a return to the playoffs is always measurable improvement.

I heard from a South coach that Matt Brown (OC's head coach) showed a lot of class in this rivalry game...pulled starters pretty early in the 3rd, vanilla offense the 2nd half. I expect nothing less than pure class with the guys on that staff.

I noticed Oldham County started pulling starters by the second series in the second half. Might have started earlier, but that's when I noticed. Had almost no starters left by mid-3rd. Eleven different Colonels carried the ball and both quarterbacks played. (keep in mind, the starting QB was out, so this was the #2 and #3 QBs playing...)

Brett Leary - who had 145 yards rushing - carried the ball four times in the third and that was it. The other two primary RBs, Tyler Oldham and Kirk Yepko, didn't have any second-half carries.

Oldham didn't throw a single pass in the second half. Very "vanilla" offense. Matt Brown and staff deserve sportsmanship kudos...they didn't quit playing hard, and the kids on the field playing in the clean jerseys (read: subs) got quality time, but there was no effort to run the score up on South.

Coach Brown did what was right. And still got his desired result. I know that winning 2-3 games is an improvement over last year's 0 - 10. The last couple of teams were like 3 - 17 against some 6A powers. By winning games over inferior teams? I don't know? Thing is, the kids know this too. They are not stupid. So what does that do to them mentally? These kids have already surpassed last years team by winning 1. They have lost a couple that they should have won. So with Grant, should be a win and Owen should be a win. The SO kids need to know what success is, and they need to believe that they can be successful.

I continue to be very impressed with Coach Brown at OC. It's my hope that he settles in and stays with the Colonels and becomes the kind of coach every school hopes for - a successful coach who stays a long time and endeavors not just to win games and a few district titles, but who stays to build a program and a tradition.
