Help me understand class determination?

Featured Replies

With the 6 class system schools would seem to me to be on the "borderline" of moving up or down in class more often then in a 4 class system, so help me understand the criteria.

1. Is it just male enrollment that counts?

2. If your school is 10-12 grades instead of 9-12 does that affect the numbers?

3. Are there any differences at all for private schools?

4. Can a school opt to stay in a certain class or move up in class even if their enrollment is low?

I know a school can move up. I don't think they can move down. If it went by numbers only, Highlands would be in 3a. The other questions I'm not sure. Good questions. We might have to wait until tomorrow to find out. I'm sure most BGP's are on their way to a game. 6:30 on Friday whats wrong with us?

To answer your questions:

1. Is it just male enrollment that counts?

Yes, in regards to that only male enrollment counts.

2. If your school is 10-12 grades instead of 9-12 does that affect the numbers?

I think that this still falls into the total numbers category, if you have fewer male students then you are in a lower class no matter how many grade levels you have.

3. Are there any differences at all for private schools?

Only if the school has all boys or all girls. As this is football then it affects only all male schools. In those cases the enrollment numbers are doubled for classification purposes. For instance if you have 500 boys in an all male school they treat it as though you have 1000 for enrollment purposes.

4. Can a school opt to stay in a certain class or move up in class even if their enrollment is low?

Can only opt up, not down.

Holmes H.S. moved down from 5 to 4 this year for football.

Then their enrollment numbers likely changed.

It isn't done yearly, at least I don't think it is. It is done every 2 years or so I think, which is why schools move around at strange times. There is no way to move down though outside of enrollment changes at this time.

Highlands is able to move up from 3A to 5A because there were no other schools in No. KY. 3A or 4A to play and all of their games would involve traveling to other districts. Some feel Beechwood should move up a class from 1A. There is not a geographical need meaning there are plenty other 1A teams in their area. They are not allowed even if they wanted, the KHSAA determines this.
