Hicks coming back to Corbin

High school basketball fans are going to get a treat on Saturday, Nov. 21.

 

Sixteen teams will participate in the Southern Kentucky Hardwood Pre-season Showcase, which will be held at The Arena.

 

Former Corbin Redhound coach Billy Hicks will bring his top-rated Scott County Cardinals down along with local teams from Corbin High School, South Laurel High School, Barbourville High School and Knox Central High School.

 

Schools from Warren Central, Fern Creek, Lafayette, Middlesboro, Rockcastle County, Wayne County, Knott Central, Boyle County, Leslie County and June Buchanan will also participate in the one-day event.

 

“We’re very excited,” Synergetic Solutions LLC. promoter Phil Smith said. “We are very happy to be able to put this event on. I believe it will give the basketball fans of the Tri-County something exciting to watch before the regular season begins.

 

“I love the game of basketball and to be able to have an event like this makes me love my job even more,” he added.

 

One of the intriguing story lines of the showcase is bringing Hicks back to Corbin. After stepping down as the Redhounds’ coach, Hicks has guided Scott County to two state championships.

 

“I know that Billy is thrilled to be back,” Smith said. “I think it’s fantastic to see him come back to the Tri-County.”

 

Hicks said he was looking forward to bringing his team to play in the Arena.

 

“I’ve been to The Arena a couple of times and it’s really a great place,” he said. “I just can’t wait to come back down to Corbin. I’ve got a lot of friends in Corbin and a lot of friends for life. It’s going to be fun to come back here and see everyone.

 

“I came back down here when Tony first got the job, and I really didn’t like it because I want to win every game my team plays, and it was just a weird situation, but now time has gone by and I don’t mind to come down to play Corbin or whoever. I’ve got a lot of friends in Corbin and I would love to see them all.”

 

None of the match-ups have been set yet, but Smith said all of the teams should know who they will be playing within the next couple of weeks.

This sounds like a great event. I hope the wife will give me a yard pass so that I can attend.
