Roger Huerta vs. Clay Guida was a great fight. Guida won the first two rounds and was winning the third. He was relentless, as he always is. Huerta was game, he kept fighting but really couldn't get anything serious going. Then, late in the third, in a fight that was clearly going to lose, he rocked Guida and ended up choking him out with 31 seconds left.

 

This one didn't have the star power like a Liddell/Couture fight, but it was an awesome fight.

 

I also enjoyed Couture vs. Ortiz, when Randy spanked him, literally.

 

Couture vs. Gonzaga - Couture was a huge underdog and Gonzaga was being hyped as the future of the HW division. Randy dominated him with the clinch and dirty boxing, and broke Gonzaga's nose with a big slam. He eventually won by TKO in the third round.

The UFC announcers...Joe Rogan and ?????, and quite a few others. Gonzaga was the favorite going into the fight.

 

And, I just picked Florian because I dislike him so much I figured he'd win.

 

He did make it to the fourth round though...I'm not sure Anderson Silva even landed a punch that didn't knock Griffin down. I guess he's just lucky Forrest decided not to use his size and strength advantage. :sssh:

Forrest no doubt had a bad game plan. However Florian made it 3-4 rounds but he got beat in every one IMO. And I don't remember Rogan predicting against couture. Couture was the favorite IMO because he is a much better fighter and he had just destroyed a much bigger Tim Sylvia.

And, Gonzaga was just coming off a dominating victory over Mirko Cro Cop that ended in one of the most brutal KO's in MMA history. He was bigger, stronger, and younger than Couture...and he was viewed as a well-rounded fighter.

 

And, lest we forget, Cro Cop was widely viewed as the #2 HW in the world at that time, behind only Fedor. Gonzaga was coming off a more impressive win than Couture. He was the favorite...maybe you didn't have him pegged as such. If not, kudos for you for calling it correctly. But, more people than not were surprised at how that fight turned out.

I remember The Natural being the distinct underdog although everybody also knew that you could never count him out.

I just went back and watched that fight again, Randy Couture absolutely mauled Gonzaga. Wow.

Gonzaga hasn't put it all together mentally, IMO. I don't know if he had a game plan or not, but he certainly couldn't adjust to Couture's. He was completely overmatches by Randy's clinch and had no counter. Gonzaga done well in the brief moments when the two guys exchanged with a little distance between them. Couture did a masterful job of staying tight, picking his spots to unleash a 2-3 strike combo and then close back to the clinch. Gonzaga looked lost and overwhelmed. I also think he the slam that broke his nose rattled him and he never recovered.

 

He's got huge potential, but I'm not sure he's ever going to reach it.
