ChiefSmoke Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 Who are some of the people that have helped improve the quality of football in this state? I can think of alot more than these 4, but this is a start. 1 & 2- Tim Couch & Mike Holcomb: These guys were taking the passing/spread game to an entire new level BEFORE the arrival of Hal Mumme, who certainly helped it along. Now, it is hard to imagine HS football in this state with out the spread game and the way it has generated excitement, etc. 3- Jerry Claiborne: Lead the way to bring back spring practice in the HS's. Former UK coach and player, as well as a player at Hopkinsville. Those 10 extra practices, which can be in full pads, blocking, tackling, etc. add up to 30 practices over a career in HS that a player can use to improve techniques and fundamentals. 4- Chuck Smith: Leading Boyle to 5 straight state titles made other county schools(especially those sharing a county with city schools) think it was possible for them to have quality football on a consistent basis. Tell the rest of us your difference makers!

Like him or not, it was when he became the head coach at UK that teams around the state started focusing on the passing game alot more.
