In a game that CovCath played with more emotion and heart than I have seen this team play with in years, CovCath defeated seventh ranked Lexington Christian behind an outstanding pitching performance by Zach Isler.

Isler improved his record to 6-0 and impressed the heck out of the Eastern Kentucky coach who came just to see Ice pitch. Ice was in complete control of the game and only got better and better as the game went on. He allowed a single run in the first, third and fifth but after having thrown 93 pitches after five complete Isler only had to throw ten pitches in the sixth and nine in the seventh to close out the game. Isler indeed was impressive.

The play of the game and indeed one of the finest Theoldguy has ever seen in a high school game, happened in the top of the fifth inning. LCA got their first batter on (Ryan) via a single and then the second batter (Stevens) put a nice 1-3 sacrifice bunt down to more Ryan to second base. One out man on second! The number three batter (Crain sp?) hit a rocket for a double to score Ryan so now LCA has a run in, a man on second and only one out and the score at this point is tied 3-3. The next batter and he is LCA number four batter in the lineup Krumps put on first with an international walk. At this point Isler has now thrown 91 pitches and IMO is starting to look a little tired. First pitch is a strike as is the second so with the count 0-2 Johnson hit a shot, and I truly mean a shot that is destined to be a base hit just to the right of CovCath second baseman Logan Siemer. Siemer thinks other wise and just lunges for the ball and the ball is hit so hard that it literally turns Loganto the outfield with the momentum of the ball. With a quick move Loganis to his knees and throws CovCath shortstop Tyler Holocher the ball, for the force out and then literally Holly throws the ball to first as he is being taken out where Krumme scoops the throw out of the dirt for the third out. Isler was so impressed and happy with the play by his second baseman and his infielders that Ice ran to Logan and gave Logan a huge pat on the back. It was such a bang, bang play that from that point on, Lexington Christian had never was the same team.

The good: Isler pitching, the infield “D” and the hitting of the bottom third of the lineup lead by Tyler Holocher who went two for two and a Catcher Interference, Brett Stayton and Neil Martin. Those three slots of the lineup scored five of the CovCath 7 runs.

What was funny, was Luke Maile throwing out the number nine batter for the third out in the fourth and in doing so, a Lexington Christian (or at least I thought it was a LCA fan) was heard to have said, “that’s ok Maile will be doing that for us next year in Lexington”!

The bad: Let’s just say when you beat the seventh ranked team in the State, there is no bad or ugly.

CovCath is now 16-1 on the season and plays Saturday vs. eight ranked Louisville St. X at St. X at 9am.

BTW it was a simply beautiful night for baseball and the St. X complex is indeed one of the nicest I have seen a HS have. As Coach Eck told me when giving me directions to the field, just look for the College campus on the right after you get off Watterson.
