Mason-Dixon Deaf School Tournament in Danville

Featured Replies

I stumbled upon this and though I would share. Kentucky School for the Deaf (KSD) is hosting the Mason-Dixon tournament in Danville.

A video stream of the games is available here.

Don't bother adjusting your speakers, there is no audio. Stop and think before you ask why............:ohbrother:

Well done to the organizers, for this event. Many of us take for granted, what these student-athletes must overcome to play.

A lot of admiration and respect to all.

As the school shrinks because of more mainstreaming of deaf students as well as fewer children being born deaf I am afraid that the school sports past will be forgotten. Being from Danville, I grew up in rec. league sports with many kids who went to KSD. I admired for years the extra effort that was required for the kids to compete. The Boyle County high school JV football team for many years scrimmaged KSD's football team. KSD has a proud sports history and won a few national deaf championships is a couple of different sports and I am afraid because of the school getting smaller that this history will eventually be forgotten or lost. Just my 2 cents. I would like to see the KHSAA put up a monument of some sort on the campus while the school is still big enough to compete.

I have the utmost respect and admiration for the KSD kids. I remember playing them in freshman football 30 years ago and they would use a big base drum on the sideline to simulate the snap count (they players could feel the vibrations of the drum).

I remember some decent basketball teams, too, but the name of the best player in their history escapes me. It was David something and I can picture him flying all over the court. They made it to the 12th Region Tournament at Pulaski County one year.
