Dixie Heights Preview...34th district to employ seeding

New Kid to battle Dixie:

Now that St. Henry has arrived from District 33 to make room for the new Cooper basketball program, Crusaders senior Cameron Speed expects his team to make a new rival.

"I liked being in the 33rd. But now that we're in the 34th, there's probably going to be some real serious games against Dixie," Speed said. "They're the champs over here, and we've won our district, so I think it's going to be a pretty intense rivalry with them for years to come."

Those Dixie-St. Henry contests mean much more now not only because they are set to meet just once a season as new district foes. After years employing a blind draw to create tournament pairings, District 34 has adopted a seeding format.

"Those games are really important now from a seeding standpoint, which is all new for us," Dixie Heights coach Ken Chevalier said. "Having St. Henry come in, a well-coached team that's had a lot of success, that makes the district that much stronger, and it makes the region stronger."

Dixie has dominated the district, rolling up eight consecutive district tournament titles, four under Chevalier. The Colonels beat Villa Madonna by 26 points in last season's district final. They won the previous five district championship games by an average of 21 points.

Dixie hasn't lost a game against a district opponent since 2001.

But St. Henry promises to provide some fresh competition after winning back-to-back District 33 tournament titles, even if the Crusaders also have a hard time beating the Colonels.

Now if only the 36th would seed. Congrats to the 34th!

Don't get me started on that issue. :madman:

You and I totally agree on this issue I trust :thumb:....

Last year when Holmes beat Bellevue by a score of 78-32, it just might have been a different story had the 36th had a seeded tourney! Had the 36th seeded, Holmes just might not have moved on (just playing a what if game) as NCC would have been Holmes first game opponent and NCC was the only team in NKy last year to beat Holmes. The draw stinks for more than just the better teams in the district but also for the region.

I agree with you to an extent. It would have been a much better first round game, but I doubt very seriously they would have beaten Holmes in a rematch on a neutral court. Moot point though considering we'll never know. It is what it is.

I don't think NCC would have beaten Holmes either, but the NCC game would not have been a walk over, that the Bellevue game was, and that could be a factor in a later region game. We both do agree, that district draws stink!

Indeed. But Holmes also beat Dixie by 28 the next night too and could have won by 40. ;)

Sticking to the thread though, glad to see the 34th finally go to seeding.

I think St. Henry will take this District rather easily to be quite honest. Coaching goes a very long way.

I have to agree. I think St Henry coming to the 34th will end Dixie's run of 8 straight district championships.

Will Pike get much V-time

I think Dixie is the team to beat. St.Henry will be good, but will they have the depth to end Dixie's streak is yet to be seen. Both teams have good coaching so I think it comes down to getting the right combination or mix of players for these two teams adn whoever can do that will come out on top.
