As the CC season is getting hot, Brossart, St. Henry & Villa Madonna boys look like the could take the first three spots among small schools in the state meet. Do you agree? Do you think they will finish in the order mentioned or will someone be able to mix it up a bit?

I think, that in NKY in particular, we spend way too much time focusing on the small schools in cross country. If they were up in class .. they wouldn't have a chance in the overwhelming majority of years.

 

This year for instance ... there continues to be a great deal of coverage for all 3 of the above schools ... yet .. .the best boys team in NKY all year has been Conner. None of those 3 have even come close this season. But since AAA is so tough ... Conner will be fighting for a top 5 finish in their class.

 

I am just not so sure that we should "more" time overall on 3 teams that would not break the top 10 in AAA.

 

All 3 of the above teams are good--and are more than solid programs .... just not sure that beating up on sub-par competition is something that is continuously worth talking about.

Small schools , less students to choose from, then to see the numbers these

teams continue to send to the line at each meet. Amazing if you aske me, I could read any thing that people would write about these teams. The likes of Brossart and St. Henry do not shy away from the Big teams during the regular season so dont knock them for their accomplishments when it comes time to run the post season events.

I am not knocking anything ... but be real ... it isn't realistic to constantly read about how great they are ... when they are not even the best team in the area. Plus .. winning Class A state championships are great ...but they wouldn't have a chance against the best teams in the state regardless of what class they are. There may be a year every so often where they are good enough .. but it will always be hard to listen to how great they are .. when they can't even beat the other teams in the area.

 

For example ... Conner was missing 2 of their heavy hitters this past weekend ... and still beats St. Henry .. and the talk on other message boards is about "how good St. Henry is" .. bull. The talk should have been ... the great giant St. Henry couldn't even beat Conner when they were two men down.

 

Also .. St. Henry doesn't have football (and Brossart barely has football), Villa doesn't either. Not to mention St. Henry has 3 TIME MORE runners in their program than a school like Conner. So ... that equals out some of the argument about "big schools" and how they have more kids to choose from. Big schools = Bigger politics ... which also means that kids tend to specialize more often. Your argument doesn't hold much weight.

But as far as holding weight, I think tou just picked a good year to compare Conner with the small schools. Dont have stats in front of me to verify, but I would like to think that their have been years where A schools could have matched up with any Big in the Region.

ummm .. no offense .. but Conner has been good for a while now. And that again--speaks to the issue. You may or may not have been involved with cross country for all that long ... (not sure--don't want to assume) ... but they are not a one year drop in the pan.

Not saying they have not... no offense, but have been years where A schools matched up favorably. Been around the sport since the mid 80s

but primarily small schools.

Wanted to look at recent seasons and see how they stack up. Using the Grant Co. Invitational as a meet that was non classified. 3 out of the past 5 years Conner was the Varsity Boys Team Champ. The other 2 years Brossart was The Varsity Team Champ. Just one meet but IMO speaks volumes, Youve picked a good year to sit on the high horse.

good back and forth responses - fun to read. I think the KHSAA has classification for a reason if I'm not incorrect. AAA schools SHOULD be able to beat A schools - no matter what sport it is. It is a compliment to small schools when they beat larger schools. Both Brossart and St. Henry could win the AA state championship too if they ran in it. Conner should compare themselves to the best AAA schools in the state - that's why they run in the AAA state meet and not the A state meet. Mind you, Conner does have a good program, but will not be able to run with the Trinity's and St. X's - so on the AAA level - they are just decent. And didn't Brossart beat them in the Grant Co. Inv. last year? Didn't see Brossart posting on here how they were better than Conner. Sometimes it's just nice to be humble. Good luck at state Conner. I really do hope you run well. You represent the area very well and should be proud of your program.

Great Job by NKY Teams at The Meet of Champions in Lexington today.

The races were run togehter than split by class afterwords. Real strong

showing by Conner boys and Highlands girls along with Walton girls. Great competition with at least a couple hundred runners in each race. Great tune up for Region and State.

The regional results in class A boys:

St Henry - 1st

Villa Madonna - 2nd

Bishop Brossart - 3rd

Walton Verona - 4th
