The government taking measures to keep prices artificially inflated coupled with the fact that this will encourage even more risky investment behavior, is, IMO, more likely to cause the Great Depression II than anything else. The government can't prevent a recession, and I believe that this short-term solution will only cause long term problems.

Businesses that make irresponsible decisions that are bad for their business, generally fail. That is what they are s'posed to do!
