July 30, 200818 yr You won't like this but I find the original one, Star Wars with Luke, very boring through most of the movie. It and the last with the Ewoks are the ones I find least entertaining. Now, the New Hope one does pick up when Han gets involved but Mark Hamill makes Christian Hayden look like Jack Nicholson. Sorry, Hamill is a better actor without direction. Now, Christenson might be better with a good director but as many of the actors who worked with Lucas can attest he does nt direct actors well. He is a wizard in the film room though. The reason I am okay with the performance you get from Mark Hamill is that he is a character who is growing into who he will become and the little whiney aspects of his personality are compensated for by the fact that he needs to grow up and the fact that he had Sir Alec Guiness next to him to compensate. Now Christenson's character did have plenty of growing up to do, but I submit that someone who spent about 10 years in the Jedi order learning how to be a Jedi would be dramatically more mature than the nephew of a moisture farmer who did his best to keep Luke in the dark about the world around him. I will agree with you though that ANH and ROTJ were much weaker than Empire which is the best science fiction movie I have ever seen in terms of character, writing, directing and development of story.

I could easily live with Empire being the best of the 3. I really liked the young Obi character and thought McGregor did a good job with it. Whomever the actor was that played Senator/Emperor, I thought was great. I really liked the strength of Portman's character and how she played it in #1 and #2 but disliked where they took her in #3. You could see where Princess Leia got her strength of character from mom based on #1 and #2. I personally liked the story development on the role of the Jedi council and how it played out to their demise. The final stroke of Anakin murdering all the young Jedi's, I thought was a good story point to show him giving out full bore to the Dark Side.

Empire is the best of all of them, best actors best writing and best directing. Also added the desperation of the Rebellion, it seemed so much more palpable on Hoth. Ewan MacGregor as Obi-Wan was probably the only thing about 2 & 3 that I don't feel offended my sensibilities as it was quite clear to me that he modelled his performance off of Alec Guiness'. He was a shining star in a cavelcade of mediocrity. Strength of character? Maybe, but only in comparison to those on screen with her. That is like saying that Pam Anderson was a strong character when opposite a cardboard cutout. Not that I am denigrating Natalie Portman, she is an excellet actress but the writing gave her hackeyed quotables for kids to repeat for her dialogue. She did the best with what she had to work with. Leia was a much stronger character across the board, even if Carrie Fischer isn't the actor that Natalie Portman is. They didn't do a good job of showing Anakin's fall in my opinion, it was awfully sudden and frankly he had about the insight of a blind and deaf sloth when he was being manipulated by Palpatine. If someone is telling me this little fairy tale about the Sith, who were mostly wiped out long ago, warning lights and sirens should be blaring in the head. Also when Anakin tries to convince Shaft Windu not to kill him because it "isn't the Jedi way" then suddenly chopping off his arm and slaughtering children is pure drek. There was no build up to it other than he was thinking about ways to save his wife, this is something that should have been gradual not instant. Kind of like minute rice as opposed to nice basmati rice that has had time to simmer just right(I love Indian food). Honestly the prequels did a good job of making me think the Empire was good for the Galaxy. The Emperor, in moments of private reflection, was relieved to know that there would be peace and order as opposed to the chaos that had existed. Religious fanatics in high political stations, an inefficient democracy with no means of mantaining order in the galaxy if something really big like, you know a war crops up. The Imperial Army only existing because of a plot on the part of Palpatine. Frankly my favorite part of EPIII was watching all the Jedi get slaughtered, including the young ones. I don't like how the Jedi were portrayed either, too superheroish and too powerful for my taste.

If you think there was no buildup, then you are missing the importance of him abandoning his mother to a life of slavery while vowing to return to save her in #1, her death, his realization that he had failed on his promise of freeing her and his slaughtering her killers in #2, that lead to his obsession to save his wife in #3.

Okay we have 3 isolated incidents that are the "buildup." If he stayed consistently darker after that I would actually buy that but after the slaughter of the Sandpeople (which was warrented) in the second one he flips a switch after he whines to Padme and suddenly he isn't as dark. If he had slowly and visibly made these changes gradually I would have bought it. Having "mommy" issues aside I felt that his darkness wasn't well developed enough to make it believable. They could have easily remedied that by progressively writing him darker until that final moment, which I would have been fine with. As it is it seemed too sudden for my taste. Frankly if he had gone to the dark side entirely after the slaughter of the sandpeople and the third movie had been about his quest to kill all the Jedi I would have been fine with that too. There were a number of moments that would have worked for a "sudden" change but it was the one they chose that ultimately did not sit well with me.

Can't disagree with you on that. Could have been handled better and he did seem to flip flop like a Democrat Presidential candidate.:sssh: I think they went the way they did to give credence to him turning on Emperor for the sake of his son in #6. If he had just gone dark for the sake of dark, than his turn from the dark side for the sake of Luke would not have made sense. But the 6 movies about one man, Anakin Skywalker and in essence his love for his family throughout it.

Well I still look at them as 3 entirely separate movies that only have a tertiary connection to the first three (in order of release not story order). I still don't buy that Lucas had EP I-III completey written and story borded out when he did the original 3. I can accept that he had the basic ideas in hand, I just wish that he hadn't insisted on going it alone in the writing/directing department because we might not be arguing about this on average of 1-2 times a year if that had been the case.
