Track regionals this week

Any predictions?

With regional meets now all contested on one day instead of two, will results be less impressive than in years past (with prelims and finals in all events on one day)?

I would imagine that could lead to some slower times in the finals. This also may reduce the number of qualifiers for state with fewer finishers outside the top two making the qualifying standard.

The same number will qualify for state; a complete field must be entered. Top 2 from each Region will qualify, as will the next 4 best at-large performances. I do agree that there is a good chance that the times/heights/distances will suffer. Especially in the vertical jumps. For example, it's not uncommon to have 18 or 20 high jumpers qualify. Many also participate in other events; typically sprints but not always. Hopefully I'll be wrong, but I think performances, particularly in finals (not prelims) will suffer.

In other words, there may not be as many "automatic qualifiers" by virtue of attaining the qualifying mark, but there will still be the same number of qualifiers overall.

I think it may hinder performances by the kids that participate in more than one event. When my son was in high school he participated in the 110 high hurdles, 300 hurdles, pole vault, and high jump. He said going from one event to the other was not that tiresome but by the end of the day it took it's toll on the legs. Having to qualify and then compete in the finals on the same day IMO will have an affect on the times and heights.

Only the horizontal jumps and throws have prelims. In years past both only one throwing event or horizontal jump was contested each day. This year both will be contested on the same day which could impact the second event contested.

All sprint events are timed finals. All entries are mandated to be from verifiable FAT timed meets or adjusted to FAT standards. All entry marks are to come from properly submitted marks on the KHSAA web site. All entries are subject to protest during a set pre - meet time frame and must be verified if challenged. There are no pre lims in any running event.

next year the state meet will also be a one day event.

this is reportedly at the request of school administrators to cut expenses regarding travel.

If that is indeed the case, the results may not ba as bad as I feared. I was imagining someone high jumping, running 400 prelim and final, running 200 prelim and final, and long jump prelim and final all on the same day.:creepy:

For as of the distance runners, the one day makes a bigger difference. My son runs the 1600m and 3200m, and with the one day regional he had to run 4x800 relay first. I noticed that some of the top notch relay teams had thier best distance runners by-pass the 4x8 in the region and just focus on thier ind. events and will put them back in the state meet, which is 2 days for this year.

Just getting to the state meet is a challenge. With only the top 2 from each region, and only 4 at-large entries thru out the state it becomes very difficult to even get there. Some kids only choose to do 1 event, to better their chances while others do the max. amount (four) in order to help the team get more points. Do you do what's best for the team or yourself? Anyway my son made the AA State meet in the 3200 and the 4x800 relay, with a chance at getting a at-large in the 1600m, but will not know untill this Saturday.

I look forward to going to Louisville next weekend.

It's especially difficult getting to the State AA meet when you have perennial powerhouses such as HIghlands, Lloyd Memorial, Russell, etc. in your region.

As to the decision to try to pile up points for the team in the Regionals vs. trying to qualify for the state meet; I would guess that that's a coaching decision. Which is more important? Is it better to be a Regional champ or runner-up and bring home something for the school trophy case, or should the focus be on qualifying as many athletes as you can in the state meet. My vote goes to the latter, but I'm not a coach.
