Owensboro Catholic 2 Walton-Verona 0 (All A Semi-Final)

Recommended Posts

The Walton-Verona Bearcats are coming home with a third place finish in the State All "A" Classic as they were defeated by last year's and now this years champions, the Owensboro Catholic Aces by a 2-0 final on Sunday afternoon.

Justin Mersch pitched well enough for the win, but Owensboro Catholic got their first run in the bottom of the first inning. That run, an RBI double from Chris Ward that scored tournament MVP, sophomore center fielder, Cole Sturgeon was all that the Aces would need. They got one more run in the bottom of the 6th inning, but the Bearcats could not answer in the top of the 7th inning, ending the game down 2-0.

The Bearcats only mustered 2 hits and only one other base runner with a walk throughout the game. The hits came from Jordan Ponzer, a single to left field in the 3rd inning and another single in the 5th inning to center field. The walk was issued to Scott Kirk.

Josh Hopperton was named to the All "A" Classic All State Tournament Team for his outstanding pitching effort in the game on Saturday.

Pitching Line for the Bearcats:

Justin Mersch - 6 innings, 2 runs, 1 earned, walked 5, struck out 6, 109 pitches, 65 for strikes.

The Bearcats go to 12-15 with the loss. They will next face Lloyd Memorial at home tomorrow (Monday) at 5:00pm.
