Fast-pitch vs. Slow

Featured Replies

My DD has pitched for 6yrs she is 13 . Alot of shoulder rotator cuff problems are from 2 reasons most of all poor mechs, and poor posture back strength. Alot of pitchers have not been taught right they lead with there elbow and so many other issues. My DD did this and on a long tour, weekend she would have shoulder pain. But when she got the mechs right no more shoulder pain. In fastpitch if the legs can hold up and the mechs are right no problems. Most of the power in fast pitch is in the legs. The 43 ft would make the game better for the hitters for awhile till the pitchers caught back. For a good pitcher it wouldnt take long.

So true. I have worked with many pitching coaches (mostly those who were Div 1 pitchers and now teach pitching) and the first 2 things they say are get your mechanics right and you have to get your legs under you to be able to pitch well.

You really dont realize till your around it alot and understand the pitching motion and what all is involved in a wind mill motion to do it right. I learn something daily seems like. When you start pitching the rise ball you might need to keep an eye on the elbo stress. Most of the time no problems.

Yes and no. Most coaches teach the rise ball by getting "under" the ball by bending the back leg to get the rise but yes it does have a little stress on the elbow. However, nowadays if you watch a college game they use the rise ball as a waste pitch.

Your right its not relied on a much

I'm not a fastpitch fan and don't claim to be, but it seems to me it would be better for softball programs to have an innings rule, simply because it would allow schools to develop more pitchers - instead of trotting the same girl out every night.

Just curious as does everyone have 2 varsity quality pitchers?

Also, isn't JV teams there to help develop players?

What ive been around it doesnt just take innings. My DD works year round and you dont have that many young ladys that will comment to that.It takes alot of hours. And if you have walk fests in season games from want to be pitchers no body gets any better. If you have two top guality v pitchers in a program you are blessed. At least in this part of country. Alot of times its hard to have 1.

I think we should have a quater rule in basketball. That way if one team had a dominate post player they would have to set them down some, and develop another one. It would get boring if they blocked to many shots and one team couldn't score.

I wasn't really implying a boredom thing. I was just saying that if you had an innings rule you would have a staff of pitchers, not just one.

First to answer your reply. In the 1968 sweet sixteen such a player you are describing was a young man by the man of Jim McDaniel's, and he played for Allen County. Jim was one of the first real basketball 7 footers who could indeed play the game of basketball. McDaniel's did it all. He could shoot, block shots, rebound, even run the floor, he was at the time one of the greatest basketball players that I every saw play the HS game (BTW he went to WKU and is a legend there still to this day), but you know what? His team didn't ever win the sweet sixteen, because Louisville Central had a better team that year and beat him.

Now my question is still on the floor, if Allen (or any of the other teams that have that one dominating pitcher) couldn't pitch every single inning of every single game, would Ryle or they, still be as good? I just like team sports. Even in Golf, Cross Country, Swimming, you can have a dominating player, but unless you have a team, you can't win a state title.

Probably not but I still do not understand your point of limiting a kid's innings pitched. Like I said before if the fastpitch would gain strength in NKY or even KY then most people would not have the attitude as you do. If kids were coached correctly we probably would not have this discussion regarding if a pitcher should have their innings limited. Here is my point why is it Allen's fault or even Ryle's fault that Allen is so good. She worked her butt off to be where she is and why should she be "punished" per say by limiting her innings. To me it seems like a league ball mentality where everyone gets to play. This is a varsity sport if you want to develop a player then put them on JV so they can get plenty of playing time.

You hit the nail on the head. League ball mentality like i said before the position of pitcher takes more time to develope than any other spot on the field. And you have got to atleast be able to pitch strikes or your not helping the team at all.putting limits on innings would be a night mare in fastpitch only my 2cents

Pitching innings does not develop pitchers. Going to the gym to pitch all winter and pitching four or five games a weekend in July and August in summer ball develops pitchers. I have yet to meet a coach who would not throw a second capable pitcher if he had one. Most teams do not have one girl that will make this commitment much less two or more. My point is we do not expect coaches of other sport to develop a bench by sitting there best player and playing people who do not do the work or make the commitment on their own. Some of you I am sure know, but some have no idea how much time over several years it takes to be a good fast pitch pitcher.

I don't think anyone is getting the point I am trying to make. Say team B has a really, really good team, and has a pretty good stable of pitchers, but has no Allen or such. Then they have to play team A with a Allen or such throwing, and because of that one girl, team B has no chance to win, but the team itself is a much better team, and they play a much better brand of ball. At least in Baseball, to get to the State semi-finals you have to play a best of three series, and you have to pitch a different pitcher, so it is your team that wins, not beasue you have that one great pitcher who throws each and every game. I just think, one player shouldn't be the reason for winining a state tournament.
