My sources are telling me that Newport is going to have spring football this year. I was concerned about a lot of baseball players that also play football not being able to attend but I'm told arrangements are being made. Good thinking Coach Hyder -- a positive step in the right direction. I hope to find out the schedule of the spring sessions -- I'm hoping to attend some of them.:dancingpa

Today the practice was cancelled no sure as to why. As far as new -- it is for Newport -- this will benefit the team a lot. It gives a coach a chance to see some areas you can look at early. Plus it gives a coach a chance to see who really wants to be there.

Well Newport finally got going today looks like they have around 40 kids, not the turn out they had last year but it is still early.

I believe they started with around 70 players last July. They ended the season with about 35 players. Time will only tell how many stick it out. Once the full contact starts completely then tend to start quitting.

I did witness this. The Wildcats had a wonderful turnout, 40 nice looking athletes and I know of about 15 more on the baseball team. Really impressive on the Turf, and with some Newport Wildcat pride. Looks like the feeder systems are starting to pay off, middle school and NFF and with a great freshman coaching staff that has been competetive, consisted and disciplined.

I heard there was a scimmage game set up with Bellevue next Thursday 3-20-08.

Teams are not allowed to scrimmage other schools in the spring practice sessions.

8) Each football school may conduct ten (10) practice periods of

not more than two (2) hours in length and not more than one

practice per day over ten (10) days during the three calendar

school weeks following the school’s elimination from postseason

play in basketball. All equipment authorized by the

football playing rules may be used during this period. There

can be no inter-school competition during this period, and all

participants must be eligible according to all KHSAA eligibility

rules.

Actually -- the baseball coach (Grady Brown) has been working his practices around the spring football so that the boys on the baseball team could go to spring football.

Unlike schools like Highlands, Some schools believe if its baseball season they re going to concentrate on that sport!!

Newport's baseball players are attending spring football. I think I made the comment before that Coach Brown is arranging his practices so that they can attend.
