Pitch Count?

Featured Replies

Does the KHSAA use a pitch count or innings pitched to control how much a pitcher can be used? Is there a web site that can give details?

No, the KHSAA does not currently mandate a Pitch Count.

Here is a thread, regarding this topic....http://www.bluegrasspreps.com/showthread.php?t=123405&highlight=Pitching+limits&page=2

Week innings Remaining - Innings remaining in seven day period (maximum 15 innings in any seven day period)

Days Rest Required - Mandatory rest required for this appearance

3-5 innings = 1 day rest starting following day

6 innings = 2 days rest starting following day

7-9 innings = 3 days rest starting following day

I wonder if khsaa will be moving to a pitch count given that so many organizations have already done so? You hear horror stories occasionally about kids throwing 150-200 pitches in a game when the coaches are only restricted by innings. K3 - any idea if other states have moved away from innings pitched and towards pitch counts? The only issue I have with it is that there can be some "conflict" between the teams as to the actual pitch count, but as long as your scorekeepers are conferring after each inning, there usually isn't a problem.

I have to agree! A kid can breeze through a game lasting only 5 innings, and then has to sit, but a kid can get hammered for two innings while throwing a ton of pitches, but can pitch the next day.

I keep my own stats for the games that I attend, and I think the biggest question that I have been asked time and time again is; how many pitches has so and so thrown so far in the game!

Every kid is different but 150 is stretching it. My son averaged right at 100 pitches per game over the last 3 years. The long innings are what hurts the arms. Conditioning the arm and keeping sleeves on while pitching in temps under 70 and warming up the body temp. before throwing will help. But I don't think they will ever put a pitch limit on a game.

Since they use NFHS rules, not sure that any have adopted Pitch Counts. None that I know of have, but they possibly could have.

No player, at any level should approach the 150 pitch total.

I agree, conditioning is critical and along with recovery. Proper icing, stretching, running and throwing program, designed for each pitcher is essential.

Pitch count would be best...however, who is going to police this? I think the good programs already do a good job with their pitchers because they realize that overuse in April and May does them little good in the post season (which is all that matters).

The current system is self-policed too. While there is a pitch rule, if a team plays out of region on Saturday, comes back home on Monday and plays in region does the umpire ever check the teams KHSAA pitching verification form before the game? If you've never seen this form here's a link: (It's the first form listed)

Here's my suggestion, from a few years ago....

Pitch Counts should and are instituted by most high school staffs. You have a very valid point as to relation to the KHSAA requirements and pitching mandates. A combination of both, can be implemented.

As mentioned earlier, it would be extremely difficult and if not nearly impossible to use a pitch count method with all road games, plus out of District games, with this exception.

After each game, both teams report pitch count totals for "all pitchers used" to the Umpires. A Documentation form can be made and both Umpires would sign off on the number of pitches thrown and that form must be indicated to the next opponent or during games within the mandatory rest period.

Teams would have to rely on the opposition and mistakes could be made, so a count by both and a compromise if totals are different. A combination of Pitch Counts and Innings Pitched, is critical to protect the student-athlete arms and not allow "overuse".

Pitch Counts should be the actual determining factor, when a team makes a change.

As an umpire, it is imperative that plate umps not tighten up the strike zone. Use the entire plate, if the edge of the ball goes over the black part of the size of the dish, it is a strike. These bats are 34"+ in length, they can reach these pitches. This one thing could decrease the amount of balls thrown and speed up the game.

I have another umpire on my side.:thumb:

Remember the question you asked about the black part of the plate in another thread?

Just playing devil's advocate here, but the fact of the matter is that the black is not part of the plate, so why change the rules? I don't think the strike zone becomes unduly tight simply by taking away a 1/2" border around the plate that the baseball rulesmakers never intended to be part of the strike zone. And yes, there are a few kids swinging 34" bats and above, but I'd bet the vast majority use something smaller (31-33").

Now, that being said, I don't mind a liberal strike zone in the slightest - as long as it is consistent from the first inning to the last. :thumb:

Couldn't agree more! Don't care if the men in blue call a high, low, tight, or even wide strike, just call it the same way for both teams for the entire game. Nothing worse for a pitcher, or even a hitter, to have to guess what a strike is, from innings to innings!
