From behind the scorers table

 

I have to tell you. It’s been 2 years since I’ve been in the Demon’s Den. But add Williamstown to the list of schools that are doing it right. The reason I say that is the Williamstown Board of Education has started a renovation project and the gym is finished. When I walked in, the gym is so much brighter. A painted ceiling, new lights and a cream colored border around the gym perimeter will do that.

 

The Henry County Lady Wildcats come to Williamstown winning 3 in a row and 4 out of their last 5. Their 7-15 record to date ties the win total for Henry County from all of last year. Williamstown enters tonight’s game with an identical 7-15 record. Henry County will have Owen County in the 31st district tournament at Owen County while Williamstown has to wait until this Sunday for a blind draw to determine who the Lady Demons will play.

 

Henry County came out and started the game up 3-0, but Williamstown came back with 5 unanswered points to take the lead at the 3;34 mark in the first quarter. Kelsey Mings hit a gimme under the basket with time running out as Henry County took a 13-11 lead into the second quarter.

 

Williamstown switched to a zone in the second quarter and benefitted from it as The Lady Demons held Henry County to just 1 field goal for the first six minutes or so of the second quarter while taking the lead. With a minute to go in the half, Williamstown went into a stall for the last shot. Jaclyn Stith hit a basket with time running out to give Williamstown a 24-21 lead at the half.

 

Williamstown started out the second half on a 7 point run in the third quarter and 9 unanswered points for the first 3 minutes. Henry County would start their own 4 point run as Coach Wilhoit replaced the entire 5 on the floor to educate them. Williamstown pushed their lead to 11 before a Henry County basket cut the deficit to 9 going into the 4th quarter, 36-27.

 

The 4th quarter saw Williamstown extend their lead to 13 with 1:36 to go in the game. Henry County had plenty of opportunities off of missed shots, but the ball would not fall for the Lady Wildcats. Henry County cut the lead to 10 with 28 seconds to go on a three pointer by Taylor Clark and that would be the difference as Williamstown takes the victory by a 48-38 final.

Ugly win, but a win. The Lady Demons missed numerous shots, but kept firing. Good luck in the district.
