Pre-season 7th Region Baseball

Featured Replies

Feb. 15th and Baseball, will be here very shortly. Let's use this thread to discuss the 7th Region, Teams, Players to watch, Schedules, Sr college commits and the season.

Atherton

Ballard

Christian Academy

Collegiate

DuPont Manual

Eastern

Fern Creek

Jeffersontown

KY Country Day

Male

Moore

Seneca

St. Xavier

Trinity

Waggener

Whitefield Academy

I'll give the nod to Male as the favorite because Estes is probably the best pitcher in the region. They may have the best catcher in the region as well in junior Steve Wilson. But in a single elimination regional it always comes down to who has the best pitching staff, not the best pitcher. Many say Eastern will have the best staff, followed by X and Trinity. Ballard will be competitve as usual but do they have someone that can replace Deathreage's numbers on the mound and at the plate? On other message boards that shall remain nameless Seneca has been touted as a contender. I've didn't see them in action last year so I can't comment one way or the other....but the word is that while Seneca returns many solid position players who can hit and flash leather they have huge question marks in the pitching staff. I've yet to see a team win a regional that didn't have at least 2 very good pitchers. Most teams have 4 or 5 that can come in, get outs and keep teams from having those big innings. I rank the region's top 5 as follows:

1. Male

2. St.X

3. Trinity

4. Eastern

5. Ballard

Really went out on a limb didn't I?

Seneca is a legitimate contender in the seventh region and rightfull should be. They have 12 seniors returning from a team that had Trinity down 1 going into the bottom of the seventh but couldn't pull it out in the district game. If you remember correctly that Trinity team was awfully good with Holland who now plays at U of L. 1 through 9 in the line-up can hit and hit well to all fields they only lost 1 senior that played every game and that was their catcher Kyle Docs but he will be replaced by Zach Adams which in my opinion is just as good or better than Docs. Bryan Clemmons will probably move back to his natural position at 2nd base and might have the quickest hands I've seen in a long time. Yes the hitting will not be the question but the pitching and I think they have 4 or 5 that can get outs for 3-4 innings at a time. No they don't have that one dominant pitcher that will go out and get you 7 innings every start but they have a few players. Bryan Chappell will probably be the ace of the staff after that it is unknown. Clemmons is probably the best pitcher but unknown of his elbow problem might be better off in a closer role for this team. I just believe this team will make a serious run in 7th this year and it could also be how the 7th draws out for them.

I look forward to watching Seneca play a few games this year.

Parkway has an excellent point about pitching. Who's number 3 that is the best may determine the outcome. The 7th region has had 5 top 20 teams as of late. It may come down to who's bats are hot, and who's number 3 can come up with a quality win. Trinity, Ballard, St. X., Male, and Eastern have always been there. Can Manual, Chritian Academy, or Seneca replace any of those 5?
