Any chance the Lady Jackets can pull an upset at Whitley?

Cant remember last time Wburg beat Whitley girls. I think Whitley is about a 10-12 point favorite but that puts in reach for Wburg to pull an upset.

Whitley Co. 56-38.

This would be the best year for the Lady Jackets to win. Whitley is not playing particularly well at this point in the season. If the Jackets can do something with Brimm in the post then they have a shot.

Both teams come in 4-0, but I think that it is safe to say Whitley has played the more difficult schedule, having already played South Laurel (W) and Corbin (W). It is at Whitley and that really helps the Lady Colonels.

 

Just Curious, why would you say Whitley is not playing well right now? I mean they just beat SL who has argueabley one of the best players in the region (Wombles)? and still could challenge for the district and regioni :confused:

 

They have had to get up for District games and been successful.

Has it ever happened? Maybe going back to when Larry Anderson was at Williamsburg and had Beth Bates, that is the only time I could think that it possibley happened. Althought they did play to within 8 points in 2005, most times it has been a wide margin of victory for the Lady Colonels. 2005 was the closest game I could find, going back to 1998.

Wburg won under Ray Martin a couple of times in late 80's or early 90's. Wburg played to within 11 at Whitley last year in a game that was a little closer than final.

Whitley did not impress me with a win over Corbin. When Corbin did not throw the ball away the Lady Hounds were able to score pretty easily. Corbin is by no means a seasoned team at the current time and Whitley narrowly beat them. WBurg has a couple of new kids and the Silent Cow. I would dare say he is as good of a Coach as there is in these here parts when he has a little talent to work with. Remember Boulevard of Champion was named in honor of Coach Rains.....and his 1985 state champs...no one else can match that in Colonel Country.

Whitley girls deserve to be the favorite. They've beaten Corbin and South, it's at Whitley, and given the history of dominance. This is the best team that W'burg has put on the floor in several years, but it would still take an outstanding effort for them to win tonight. The Brimm girl is very tough to stop when she gets the ball in the low post, and she shoots foul shots very well. Another big key will be how W'burg handles Whitley's pressure defense. South had Whitley beat and then turned the ball over constantly in the 4th quarter. If W'burg can avoid turnovers and keep Brimm to a sinle/single they may have a shot. Who knows, those are big "ifs," but that's why they play the game.

Whitley should be favored in this game, but watch out for the Jackets. Look for the jackets to try to push the tempo with Whitley.

I thnk this may have the makings of an upset, if the Burg does not beat Whitley tonight, they will beat them somewhere down the road.

Was not even a game. Whitley jumped out on the Lady Jackets from the start and never looked back. Lady Jacket guards could not handle the defensive pressure the Lady Colonels put on them. Whitley guards are very quick, skilled, and can shoot the ball well also. Brimm did not kill the girls from W'burg, Jones and Osborne did. I don't konw how many turnovers W'burg had, but I would guess in excess of 25.

I know that age is irrelevent once you step on the court, but I was just curious. It is common opinion that Whitley County identifies potential players at a young age and then parents/school hold them back so that they are older when competing in high school basketball. Obviously it is legal, and they make sure that the girls won't turn 19 prior to 1st day of school their senior year. Here are the current ages of the 8 players that get the majority of the minutes for the burg:

Again, completely legal to do the pre-high school hold back, but since W'burg does not do that, it may shed some light on the dominance that Whitley holds over them. I don't mean that this is the only reason, I know, and respect, the time and work that Coach Anderson, Jones, their staff, and all the kids put in...I'm just saying that this is 1 of the factors.

I don't know the ages, but if they are hold backs then that is the decision of the parents not the school. If it is such a problem, then maybe Williamsburg parents should look into holding kids back. Corbin, Clay, South, North, and other schools parents routinely hold back kids. I think regardless of sports it is not a bad idea to hold back a kid, give them that extra year a maturity, and more than likely you will see more academic success later high school and college.

 

Kids grow too fast in our society anyway, let them be kids for as long as they can, they have their whole lives to work.

 

TO THE GAME:

 

Whiltey dominated from the beginning and played with an intensity that Williamsburg could never match. Kayla Osborne, Holly Jones, and Company just dismantled a team that thought they could beat them, I guess they wanted to send a message they better think better next time.

I agree with the Jones and Osborne part, those 2 combined to outscore W'burg's entire team, I don't agree with the "and company" part though. Maybe I should, because the "and company" definitely helped to provide the defensive pressure, but on the offensive end it was all Jones and Osborne.

 

I certailny hope that the Lady Jackets "thought they could beat them." I'd hate to ever take a team into a game that they thought they couldn't win.
