Colonels win it on a controversial last-second tip-in by Eric Dunlap. I couldn't tell for sure, but an Oldham Co. fan said he thought it should've gone to OT.

 

Nelson Co. led much of the game, but Oldham really bumped up its intensity in the second half. Free throw shooting really hurt Nelson; they were 10-of-20 overall and 3-of-8 in the fourth quarter.

 

Dunlap had 22 and Billy Payne and Matt Day had 12 apiece.

 

Nelson had a big night on threes, knocking down eight. Daniel Drake hit four of them in a 17-point night. Jesse Beavers also had 17, and Justin Pile had 10.

 

I guess it's been a while since I've seen a game with 8th Region officials, but they really called things close.

I don't see enough 8th Region teams (although I have seen two in two nights, interestingly enough) to know the lay of the land in the region. Oldham didn't play their best game tonight, but Nelson's veteran savvy and control of the tempo (and Payne and Day having foul trouble) had a bit to do with that.

 

The fact they have most everyone back from last year, and that they will get better as the year goes on bodes well for them. They do have trouble taking care of the basketball; but I do like how they can bring the pressure when necessary. That and their size will pose problems for other 8th Region clubs.

I'm allowing for it maybe having to do more with the fact that teams are going to play sloppy early on in the season. But if I were guessing, OC had in the neighborhood of 18-20 turnovers, and they didn't shoot particularly well either.

Lord yes. Crosby, Hartlage, etc. Heck, they had front lines of 6-6, 6-7 and 6-8 on their JV teams in the days before the first split.

I don't know about him being overrated. He didn't have a great game, but he was in foul trouble and had to go against a pretty solid post player in Beavers last night.

 

The team as a whole didn't play great in the first half, but brought the goods big-time in the second half, especially on the glass and with the FC press.
