2007/2008 West Carter

Featured Replies

What does West Carter need to do to improve in 2007/2008? What do they need to keep doing to be successful? Remember, please be constructive.

I was wondering about Aaron Rayburn,I know he is a freshman but, he did not get much playing time this past summer.

The Comets should come in somewhere in the 5-9 range early in the season. They return a lot of experience, but do have to replace the Hollingsworth kid who went for about 18 or so a game.

Former star Comet and current coach Jeremy Webb has made it a point to hit big man Chris Barker early and often in the post. He looks as though he has continued to slim down, and having watched him on the football field he looks much faster and more athletic. He should be a surprise this season considering he was pretty much an after thought in the preseason rankings. I think he was around 14 points 7 rebounds a game last year once he fully recovered from a broken bone in his hand. With a little more aggressiveness I see no reason why he couldn't average 16 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 or 3 blocks a game.

The Comets have other players of note in the post. 6-8 Micky Duncan and 6-7 Bo Thompson should get some minutes, look for atleast one to possibly start. Also the starting QB for the football team Ace Puckett has to be considered one of the best rebounders in the area. I think he averaged somewhere in the 8 rpg area, coming off the bench when Barker and Wolfe were healthy. He's also a noteworthy defensive player.

As for the backcourt there are some players with experience, but Hollingsworth departure leaves huge holes in the ballhandleing and scoring departments. Matt Logan runs the point, and is an agressive defender and seems to play very unselfishly. After starting as a sophomore last year, he should be more poised and ready for the guard dominated area that is the 16th region. The Oney boy is a streaky shooter, but when he's on he's liable to go for 20. From what i've seen Trevor Rayburn is the teams "mister hustle" and can be deadly from the 3 point line. Others who will see minutes are Joe Lee, Taylor Webb, and Aaron Rayburn. Lee and Webb should help out the ball handling, and look for Rayburn to be brought along slowly and see his minutes increase throughout the season. Overall, by the end of the season the Comets should be a threat to make it to Morehead, but they will have do deal with Region heavyweight Elliott, a scrappy veteran East Carter team, and the always well coached Morgan County Cougars in the always tough 62 district. Should make for an interesting year.
