Final, both team's were unbeaten coming into game. 1st qtr. Greenup recovered a fumble on opening kickoff, and marched down to paydirt, with quarterback #9, sneaking in on the goal line. Coal Grove answered with a scoring drive of their own, on Greenups next possession, they mixed the pass and run very well, with #34 running it in from short yardage, to make it 12-6 at the half. 2nd half both defenses played real good. 4th qtr. Greenup County with 1:32 to play, held Coal Grove, who had 1st and goal at their own 3 yd. line 4 plays, for the win. Defense, once again was the difference, to keep the freshmen still undefeated. The freshmen and jv. have good coaches, Coach Sammons doesn't utilize them at varsity games, he calls all the offensive plays, and some on defense. Coach Warnock and Coach Mullins, (JV) [4-1] record, Coach Meenach and Coach Stephens, [4-0] record, Coach Sammons varsity, [1-5], he should listen more to his assistants, he's kind of set in his way about the game of football, my way or no way.

Old Warrior, I understand that you watch practices from the stands quite a bit. Would you answer me a question please?

 

In your opinion, the assistants are doing a good job. My understanding is that the assistants have very little, if any, experience in terms of number of years as a varsity coach. Would it be fair to say that Coach Sammons is doing a good job of "coaching the coaches" with his system? After all, isn't that the ultimate role of a head coach? (Ex., Coach McGlone at Russell)

^^Sun Tzu your question wasn't for me but I will just say that a Head Coaches assistants are a major part in any programs sucsess. I know that Raceland has had a steady program and assitant coaches through the years. Russell has some very capable Asst.'s as well.

Just some of the Assistants at Raceland in some of the years past and present are/were............

*Randy Vanderhoof (current head coach was under Bill Tom Ross for years),

*Gerad Parker (is now an assitant at the University of Kentucky),

*T.J. Maynard (was an excellent head coach at GCHS),

*Odell pack, Wendell Morris, Larry Stanley (these three were long time assistants at Raceland and each one would have made excellent head coaches),

* John Reed (went on to be an excellent head coach at Morgan Co.)

*Dan Mercer (Was a head Coach at GCHS and was an assitant at GC during some of their glory years),

*Current asssitant Lewis ( was under B. Lutz at Ironton,Oh. for years and years - I don't think that I need to tell anyone what a plus that is).

*Todd Burroughs and M. Fainnin are current asst. coaches that also do a great job.

 

I have just mentoned a few past and present at Raceland to make a point on what good assistants mean to a program and I am sure that I have left some off and not meaning to.

Coach Sammons 5 yrs. ago went to Portsmouth West and made a good run in the playoffs, senior dominated team, and finished as the runnerup, but he had the previous coachs players, next season by the 5 th game, was coaching from the pressbox and those people could not wait till he got let go. When Coach is not on sideline, like at jv. and freshmen games, our assistant's have success, running same offense and defense, I'm saying he's not there to screw it up, he get's imput from his assistants, but, he's not a good listener. Last night, scored on 1st drive, running the ball, 2nd drive went completely away from that, figure that out. Also, I know he will be gone after this season, administration did not want to release him in mid season, due to the way Coach Hicks was fired during season, and the assistants, finished out the year, I could of have lived with that scenario.

I agree Old Warrior :thumb:, Coach Sammons calls the wrong plays, at the wrong time, with the wrong personnel. For ex., last night at the Ashland game we(GC) take a 6 to nothing lead on the 1st drive of the game, then our defense forces a punt on their 1st series, then our next offensive series we get the ball deep in our own territory, faced with a 4th and two, we go for it from our own 18 yard line. Obviously not making it, giving Ashland the ball back, painting our defense in a corner,giving up the TD, and killing the momentum we had going.

 

In other words, he has no knowledge in calling a football game :confused:. The kids that sacrifice all summer, at practice, always seem to get the short end of the stick because Coach Sammons keeps putting them in these positions. It seems to me that he doesn't really want to win.
