PurpleHaze
The Purples started on the right foot for 2007 with a 28-7 scrimmage win over Apollo at BGHS last night. This is the scrimmage where QB Trent Steelman suffered his injury last year...it kept him out of the O-boro Catholic scrimmage along with the games with St Xavier and Christian County. This year, he completed seven of 13 passes for 63 yards, no picks, and one score (to soph RB Lavance Anderson). Steelman also ran the ball well, collecting 73 yards on only five attempts and scoring once. Senior Jared Carpenter led the Purples' ground attack with 77 yards on six attempts. He did not score. Junior Tevin Barksdale collected 54 yards on seven attempts and one score. Defensively, BGHS allowed the Eagles only 27 yards rushing on 13 attempts. However, Apollo, on only six of 19 attempts, managed 146 yards through the air. The Purples picked off two errant Eagle throws. BGHS will scrimmage Owensboro Catholic at KWC next. PurpleHaze
Actually, Cynical and whodey, you both are right on target. The Purples came out of the scrimmage completely healthy. The guys didn't lose Steelman this time...! I talked with Coach Wallace, and except for a couple of long plays the Eagles broke on them, he was pleased with how the scrimmage turned out. He wished that Apollo would have agreed to a longer varsity portion of the scrimmage. BGHS only had five offensive drives, scoring on four of them. The Purples might not be in as much trouble with the kicking game as originally thought due to the graduation of Casey Tinius, as Coach Wallace was pleased with their progression as well. Note: the Purples scored on all four drives when Steelman was in at QB. Do I think that they're as strong as last year? In a word, no. But there's no shame in that, as they lost 30 seniors who put in a lot of playing time over the last three seasons. Of those 30 seniors, one went to UK, four went to WKU, one went to KY State, and another went to Campbellsville U. Some others will try to walk on at other schools. But there's plenty of talent coming back...enough to know that the Purples will make another serious run at a state title. I know that the defense will work hard on preventing the big play in practice this week. With the most talented passing attack in school history, BGHS shouldn't find themselves out of any game until very late in the game this year. I like this team!
