The Mason County Royals rode the right arm of senior pitcher Darrin Doyle and some timely hitting from junior centerfielder Richie Cox to a 6-4 victory over crosstown rival St. Patrick in the championship game of the 39th district tournament. It is the fourth straight district title for Mason County who, along with the Saints, will take part in the 10th region tournament next week at Montgomery County.

Doyle went the distance on the mound for the Royals and finished strong by retiring six of the last seven batters that he faced, including two strikeouts in the seventh inning. Cox provided the fireworks at the plate with a two-run home run in the third inning and a run scoring double in the fifth.

"Let me give St. Patrick all the credit in the world," said Mason County coach Mike Murphy. "They came out and played us hard. There wasn't any quit in them and we didn't quit. I thought we did a real good job today. I'm proud of (Doyle) and I'm proud of all of my seniors. It doesn't hurt to have an athlete like Richie Cox on your team either."

The last two games these two teams played were very close; 5-3 last week and 6-4 on Tuesday. Well-played games by both squads; Mason has maybe one more solid stick in their lineup than the Patties.

Special thanks from me to Coach Murphy for allowing my daughter to sing the National Anthem on both nights of the district tourney.

Although they will probably be decided underdogs, good luck to the Royals and the Saints in Mt. Sterling next week!

Well, these were two electirc games, the fans in the stands were phenominal, standing cheering like it was the finals of the state tournament. Congradulations to the Royals, they just have more power than the Saints. The 5-3 game, Mason hit 3 homeruns, and in the Distric Final 6-4 game, they hit 1, the Saints didn't hit a single homerun. But it seemed like the Royals couldn't get through the hitting line-up of Stwarka, Englert, Anderson, Owens, and Chamberlain. But after that, the Royals didn't give up much more.

I thought batting Stwarka leadoff (as was the case in the tourney game) instead of in the 9 hole gave the Saints a better chance to win. Never understood why he was hitting so low in the lineup the two or three other times I saw the Saints play this year. He hits the ball as well as anyone in the lineup.

I agree. When I saw them play, he hit in the 9 hole and had a triple, double and single. Seemed like he was wasted in the bottom of the lineup though because no one was able to get on in front of him. However, it is always good to have a solid 9 hitter to turn the lineup over.

I agree with that, but I think that having your best OBP guy batting 9th is a waste. Batting first probably gets him to the plate nearly one time more per game.

I agree with you as well. I would definitely have him hitting up in the front of the order based on what I've seen and what I know of him. I can only guess or hope that would be the thinking of the coach.
