GoldenEagleFan Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 Randy Ward who coached Basketball at Greenup County for 20+ years has just been hired to take over Coal Grove, Ohio's basketball program. The Hornets were winless last year, but Ward is looking forward to the challenge of raising a team from the ashes. Ward leaves Portsmouth Clay to take the Coal Grove job where he took a team that had only won 3 games and in his 4 years played in 3 distict and 2 sectional championships. Wards Clay team was 17-11 this past year.
Springsteen#1 Posted May 20, 2007 Posted May 20, 2007 Coach Ward seems to overachieve with weak teams an underachieve with powerful ones. Take the 82-83 Greenup team one of the most talented teams the 16th has seen, but gets embarassed at the sweet 16. I hope Coal Grove doesn't expect his team to avg. 50 pts a game

Wards style of play is not favored by very many people but that style wins basketball games. I definately remember the 82-83 GCHS team, I agree that it was one of if not the most talented teams that have seen in the 16th region.

CountyPride Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 Wards style of play is not favored by very many people .[/b] I am about to fall asleep just thinking about his style of ball...:thumb:
gcguard Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 I played under coach Ward and I think he is an excellent coach. He teaches defense, and that is what wins Region championships. I played on 2 of his state tournament teams. To some it may be boring to watch but it sure wasn't boring cutting down the nets.
oldrambler Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 I am about to fall asleep just thinking about his style of ball...:thumb:     I will say that his style wins, especially come tournament time.
firebird Posted May 27, 2007 Posted May 27, 2007 I have often wondered where Randy picked up this style of play. He is from Meade Memorial High School where Wendall Wallen taught a tough man to man full court pressure type of defense with a fast break transitional offense. Even when Randy became the coach of Meade Memorial Elementary school after the Johnson Central consolidation his current style was not his style now. I guess one of those thing that make you go .............hmmmmmmm
