They do count as plate appearances. That stat is used to determine if a MLB player qualifies for a batting title.

 

So if Bonds is 100 for 300 with 250 walks his .333 average would qualify for a batting title. If Dunn goes 100 for 300 with 0 walks his .333 does not qualify.

 

Three point one (3.1) plate appearances per scheduled game are needed to win a Major League batting title.

 

DYK......if a player falls short of the needed number of plate appearances and has the highest average .......he can count the number he is short by as hitless ABs. So, for example, if you are 10 ABs short you can say "I'm 0 for 10" and if your average is still the highest you win the batting title!!!
