NL Rookie of the Year Race

Featured Replies

There are around 35 games or so to go and the NL Rookie Race appears to have narrowed to a Card and a Red.

Looking at the stats below can some fill me in a why Wetherholt is a favorite to win over Stewart?

National League Frontrunners

  • JJ Wetherholt (Cardinals): -145

  • Sal Stewart (Reds): +115

Before some says it's the WAR, that's why he is favored. One huge "flaw" (in my opinion) in WAR is that it values certain defensive positions over others. If two players had identical stats if they are higher on the position list below, they will be higher in WAR.

Catcher (C): Highest positive boost (+9 runs)

Shortstop (SS): Very high positive boost (+7 runs)

Second Base (2B): Moderate positive boost (+3 runs)

Center Field (CF): Moderate positive boost (+2.5 runs)

Third Base (3B): Small positive boost (+2 runs)

Right/Left Field (RF/LF): Negative adjustment (-7 runs)

First Base (1B): Moderate negative adjustment (-9.5 runs)

Designated Hitter (DH): Highest negative penalty (-15 runs)

Stewart wins hands down. Call me old school if you want, but what wins games is average, home runs, and runs batted in.
