The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a medical emergency at Reiner's home in LA's Brentwood neighborhood around 3:30pm on Sunday, Dec 14th and moments after arriving the LAFD called for police backup to report to the scene. It's currently unclear who contacted the authorities regarding the medical emergency, but initial reports from the city's homicide department have established that two individuals were found dead at Reiner's residence. Reiner's family has now released a statement confirming the death of writer/director/actor Rob Reiner along with his wife Michele.

TMZ has stated that they have sources who have verified both deceased Reiners suffered from "wounds consistent with a knife," and ABC News' local news station in LA has cited sources with senior law enforcement who confirmed that the couple was stabbed to death.

Rob Reiner was 78 years old and his wife Michele was 68 years old.

Reiner, who was son of writer/director/actor Carl Reiner, graduated from UCLA's School of Theater, Film, and Television in 1966, and started his career as Steve Martin's writing partner on "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" the following year. In 1971 Reiner was cast as Mike "Meathead" Stivic, son-in-law of Carroll O'Connor's primary character, Archie Bunker in the CBS series "All In The Family." The role kept Reiner as part of the show's main cast for 8 of its 9 seasons.

Reiner made his directorial debut co-directing 1981's Likely Stories: Vol. 1. The made-for-tv movie aired on Cinemax as the first installment of a 4-part anthology comedy series, with each installment featuring several comedy short-films. The short films from Vol. 1 were directed by Reiner along with frequent collaborators Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer. Reiner's move into feature films began with the mockumentary cult film This Is Spinal Tap, which he wrote and directed. He directed 22 feature films between 1984 and 2024, and a sequel to his first feature, This Is Spinal Tap, was filming at the time of his death.

As an actor Rob Reiner was nominated for 5 Primetime Emmys and 5 Golden Globes for his work in "All In The Family," and he won Emmys in 1987 & 1978. As a film director, 7 of his movies earned Academy Award nominations and 6 earned Golden Globe nominations; Kathy Bates' Oscar & Golden Globe-winning role in his film adaptation of Stephen King's novel Misery was the only Oscar or Golden Globe win from one of Reiner's movies. Reiner was personally nominated 7 times for Golden Globe Awards (Stand By Me -  Best Motion Picture Drama & Best Director; When Harry Met Sally - Best Director; A Few Good Men - Best Motion Picture Drama & Best Director; The American President - Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy & Best Director) and was nominated once for an Academy Award (A Few Good Men - Best Picture).

Very sad and I'm sure it will get more sad as additional details are released.   Mental illness is a problem in the world that needs to be dealt with on a larger scale than is currently happening.

Rest in Peace, "Meathead"
