The National Weather Service (NWS) Louisville, KY office will be conducting a required, scheduled update to the Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) from Monday May 19th through Wednesday May 21st. The NWS uses the AWIPS computer system to display and integrate weather and
water information, and to send life-saving information, such as weather and water warnings, to the public.

During the time of this update, forecast and warning operations will be conducted by our service back-up offices in Paducah (PAH) and/or Indianapolis (IND) to minimize any potential interruption to services. No impacts to our core services of forecast products and weather watches, warnings and advisories are expected during this period. The KLVX radar will remain operational and its products will continue to be distributed as normal. The NWS Louisville office will remain open and staffed at all hours throughout this update period to help support the NWS Paducah and Indianapolis offices, answer public and partner phone
calls, and additional functions that can be completed without AWIPS.

However, impacts will occur to the NOAA Weather Radio transmitters that are maintained by the NWS Louisville office and serve central Kentucky and South Central Indiana. Beginning around 8 AM on Monday, May 19th, all of the 9 NOAA Weather Radio broadcasts provided by the NWS Louisville office
will go offline for the duration of this update. A listing of NOAA Weather Radio transmitters that are broadcast from the NWS Louisville office can be found online at weather.gov/nwr/stations?State=KY. NOAA Weather broadcasts are expected to return to service sometime on Wednesday, May 21st.

During periods of planned or unplanned outages it is important to have multiple ways to receive warning information. These alternative sources include: local television/radio, weather apps on your mobile device, such as the FEMA or Red Cross App, and at the NWS website at weather.gov/lmk/.

Far be it for me to tell them how to do their job, but wouldn't a required update make more sense during the off-season of bad weather in Louisville and not right in the dead middle of tornado season?

If memory serves me correctly, this is a nationwide update, and it has been scheduled for some time, and it can't be canceled. There was no way they would know that far ahead about this situation. Tornadoes can happen any time of the year.
